- Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
- And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
- They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
- Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
- And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

- 예수께서는 당신을 믿는 유다인들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "너희가 내 말을 마음에 새기고 산다면 너희는 참으로 나의 제자이다.
- 그러면 너희는 진리를 알게 될 것이며 진리가 너희를 자유롭게 할 것이다."
- 그들은 이 말씀을 듣고 "우리는 아브라함의 후손이고, 아무한테도 종살이를 한 적이 없는데 선생님은 우리더러 자유를 얻을 것이라고 하시니 어떻게 된 일입니까?" 하고 따졌다.
- 예수께서는 이렇게 대답하셨다. "정말 잘 들어두어라. 죄를 짓는 사람은 누구나 다 죄의 노예이다.
- 노예는 자기가 있는 집에서 끝내 살 수 없지만 아들은 영원히 그 집에서 살 수 있다.

- If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
- I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.
- I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
- They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.
- But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

- 그러므로 아들이 너희에게 자유를 준다면 너희는 참으로 자유로운 사람이 될 것이다.
- 너희는 아브라함의 후손임에 틀림없다. 그런데도 너희는 나를 죽이려고 한다. 너희에게 내 말을 받아들일 마음이 없기 때문이다.
- 나는 나의 아버지께서 보여주신 것을 말하고 너희는 너희의 아비가 일러준 대로 하고 있다."
- 그들은 "우리 조상은 아브라함입니다." 하며 예수께 대들었다. 예수께서 "만일 너희가 아브라함의 자손이라면 아브라함이 한 대로 할 것이다.
- 그런데 너희는 하느님에게서 들은 진리를 전하는 나를 죽이려고 한다. 아브라함은 이런 짓을 하지 않았다.

- Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
- Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.
- Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
- Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
- And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

- 그러니 너희는 너희의 아비가 한 대로 하고 있는 것이다." 하고 말씀하시자 그들은 "우리는 사생아가 아닙니다! 우리 아버지는 오직 하느님 한 분이십니다." 하고 말하였다.
- 예수께서 또 이렇게 말씀하셨다. "내가 하느님에게서 나와 여기 와 있으니 만일 하느님께서 너희의 아버지시라면 너희는 나를 사랑했을 것이다. 나는 내 마음대로 온 것이 아니고 하느님께서 보내셔서 왔다.
- 너희는 왜 내 말을 알아듣지 못하느냐? 내 말을 새겨들을 줄 몰라서 그런 것이 아니냐?
- 너희는 악마의 자식들이다. 그래서 너희는 그 아비의 욕망대로 하려고 한다. 그는 처음부터 살인자였고 진리 쪽에 서본 적이 없다. 그에게는 진리가 없기 때문이다. 그는 거짓말을 할 때마다 제 본성을 드러낸다. 그는 정녕 거짓말쟁이이며 거짓말의 아비이기 때문이다.
- 그러나 나는 진리를 말한다. 너희가 나를 믿지 않는 이유가 바로 여기 있다.

- Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?
- He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.
- Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
- Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.
- And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

- 너희 가운데 누가 나에게 죄가 있다고 증명할 수 있느냐? 내가 진리를 말하는데도 왜 나를 믿지 않느냐?
- 하느님에게서 온 사람은 하느님의 말씀을 듣는다. 너희가 그 말씀을 들으려 하지 않는 것은 너희가 하느님에게서 오지 않았기 때문이다."
- 유다인들은 "당신은 사마리아 사람이며 마귀 들린 사람이오. 우리 말이 틀렸소?" 하고 내대었다.
- 예수께서는 다음과 같이 대답하셨다. "나는 마귀 들린 것이 아니라 내 아버지를 높이고 있다. 그런데도 너희는 나를 헐뜯고 있다.
- 나는 나 자신의 영광을 찾지 않는다. 내 영광을 위해서 애쓰시고 나를 올바로 판단해 주시는 분이 따로 계시다.

- Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
- Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.
- Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
- Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
- Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.

- 정말 잘 들어두어라. 내 말을 잘 지키는 사람은 영원히 죽지 않을 것이다."
- 그러자 유다인들은 "이제 우리는 당신이 정녕 마귀 들린 사람이라는 것을 알았소. 아브라함도 죽고 예언자들도 죽었는데 당신은 '내 말을 잘 지키는 사람은 영원히 죽지 않는다.' 하니
- 그래 당신이 이미 죽은 우리 조상 아브라함보다 더 훌륭하다는 말이오? 예언자들도 죽었는데 당신은 도대체 누구란 말이오?" 하고 대들었다.
- 예수께서 이렇게 대답하셨다. "내가 나 자신을 높인다면 그 영광은 아무것도 아니다. 그러나 나에게 영광을 주시는 분은 너희가 자기 하느님이라고 하는 나의 아버지이시다.
- 너희는 그분을 알지 못하지만 나는 그분을 알고 있다. 내가 만일 그분을 모른다고 말한다면 나도 너희처럼 거짓말쟁이가 될 것이다. 그러나 나는 그분을 알고 있으며 그분의 말씀을 지키고 있다.

- Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
- Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
- Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
- Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

- 너희의 조상 아브라함은 내 날을 보리라는 희망에 차 있었고 과연 그 날을 보고 기뻐하였다."
- 유다인들은 이 말씀을 듣고 "당신이 아직 쉰 살도 못되었는데 아브라함을 보았단 말이오?" 하고 따지고 들었다.
- 예수께서는 "정말 잘 들어두어라. 나는 아브라함이 태어나기 전부터 있었다." 하고 대답하셨다.
- 이 말씀을 듣고 그들은 돌을 집어 예수를 치려고 하였다. 그러나 예수께서는 몸을 피하여 성전을 떠나가셨다.
