- Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
- And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
- And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
- Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
- And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

- 대사제가 스데파노에게 "이 사람들의 말이 사실인가?" 하고 묻자
- 스데파노는 이렇게 말하였다. "부형 여러분, 제 말을 들어보십시오. 우리 조상 아브라함이 아직 하란에 자리잡기 전, 메소포타미아에서 살고 있을 때에 영광의 하느님께서 그에게 나타나
- '너는 네 고장과 네 친척을 떠나 내가 일러주는 땅으로 가거라.' 하고 말씀하셨습니다.
- 그래서 그는 갈대아 지방을 떠나 하란에서 자리잡고 살았습니다. 그의 아버지가 죽은 뒤에 하느님께서 그를 하란에서 지금 여러분이 살고 있는 이 땅으로 옮겨주셨습니다.
- 그 때 하느님께서는 여기에서 손바닥만한 땅도 주지 않으시고 다만 그와 그의 후손에게 이 땅을 주시겠다고 약속하셨을 따름입니다. 그 때는 아직 아브라함에게 자손이 없었던 때입니다.

- And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
- And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
- And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
- And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
- And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

- 그리고 하느님께서는 '아브라함의 후손이 외국 땅에서 사백 년 동안 나그네로 있으면서 종살이를 하며 학대를 받으리라.' 하고 말씀하셨습니다.
- 또 하느님께서는 '그들을 종으로 부리는 나라를 내가 심판하겠고 그 뒤에 그들을 돌아오게 하여 여기에서 나를 예배하게 하겠다.'고도 말씀하셨습니다.
- 그리고 그 계약의 표로서 할례법을 세우셨습니다. 그래서 아브라함이 이사악을 낳아서 여드레 만에 할례를 베풀었고 이사악도 자기 아들 야곱에게, 또 야곱은 자기 열두 아들 곧 우리 대선조들에게 할례를 베풀었습니다.
- 그런데 이 선조들은 그들의 동생 요셉을 시기한 나머지 이집트에 팔아버렸습니다. 그러나 하느님께서는 요셉과 함께 계시면서
- 모든 어려움에서 그를 건져내셨고 그에게 은총과 지혜를 주셔서 이집트 왕 파라오의 총애를 받게 하셨습니다. 그래서 그 왕은 요셉을 이집트의 총리로 세워 자기의 온 왕가를 다스리게 하였습니다.

- Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
- But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
- And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
- Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
- So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

- 그 때 이집트와 가나안 온 지역에 기근이 들어 사람들이 모두 큰 재난을 겪었는데 우리 조상들도 먹을 것이 없었습니다.
- 이 때 야곱은 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 소문을 듣고 우리 조상들을 그리로 보냈습니다.
- 그리고 두 번째 다시 보냈을 때 요셉은 형제들에게 자기가 누구인지 알렸습니다. 그래서 요셉의 가족 관계가 파라오에게 밝혀졌습니다.
- 요셉은 사람을 보내어 자기 아버지 야곱과 일흔다섯이나 되는 친족을 모두 모셔 오게 하였습니다.
- 그래서 야곱이 이집트로 내려가 거기에서 살다가 죽었고 우리 조상들도 죽을 때까지 거기에서 살았습니다.

- And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
- But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
- Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
- The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
- In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

- 그들의 유해는 세겜으로 운반되어 그 곳 묘지에 묻혔는데 그것은 전에 아브라함이 세겜에서 살던 하몰 자손에게 은전을 주고 사두었던 것입니다.
- 하느님께서 아브라함에게 하신 약속을 이루어주실 때가 가까워지자 우리 백성은 번성해서 온 이집트 땅에 퍼져 나갔습니다.
- 그런데 요셉의 내력을 알지 못하는 다른 왕이 이집트를 다스리게 되었습니다.
- 이 임금은 우리 겨레에게 교활한 정책을 써서 우리 조상들을 학대하였고 갓난아기들은 내어다 버리게 하여 하나도 살아 남지 못하게 하였습니다.
- 모세가 태어난 것은 바로 이 때였습니다. 그는 하느님의 은총을 받은 귀여운 아이였습니다. 그는 석 달 동안 아버지 집에서 자랐고

- And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
- And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
- And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
- And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
- For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

- 그 부모가 내어다 버린 뒤에는 파라오의 딸이 데려다가 양자로 삼아 길렀습니다.
- 이렇게 해서 모세는 이집트 사람의 모든 학문을 배워 말과 행동이 뛰어나게 되었습니다.
- 모세는 마흔 살이 되었을 때에 자기 동족인 이스라엘 사람들을 돌보아 주기로 마음먹었습니다.
- 어느 날, 그는 자기 동족 한 사람이 이집트 사람에게 학대받는 것을 보고는 그의 편을 들어 이집트 사람을 죽이고 압박받은 그 동족을 위해서 앙갚음을 하였습니다.
- 그는 하느님께서 자기 손을 빌려 동족을 구해 내려 하신다는 것을 동족들이 깨달은 줄로 알았으나 그들은 미처 깨닫지 못했습니다.

- And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
- But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
- Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
- Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
- And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

- 이튿날 동족 두 사람이 서로 싸우고 있는 것을 보고 모세는 그들을 화해시키려고 '당신들은 한 형제가 아니오? 그런데 왜 서로 물고 뜯고 합니까?' 하고 말했습니다.
- 그러자 자기 동료를 학대하던 사람이 모세를 떼밀며 '누가 당신을 우리의 지도자나 재판관으로 세웠단 말이오?
- 어제는 이집트 사람을 죽이더니 오늘은 나를 죽일 셈이오?' 하고 대들었습니다.
- 이 말을 듣고 모세는 이집트에서 도망쳐 나와 미디안 땅에 가서 살았고 거기에서 두 아들을 낳았습니다.
- 사십 년이 지난 어느 날 모세는 시나이 산 광야에 있었습니다. 그 때에 한 천사가 가시나무 덤불 불길 속에 나타났습니다.

- When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,
- Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
- Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
- I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
- This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

- 모세는 이 광경을 보고 깜짝 놀라 자세히 보려고 가까이 가는데 주님의 음성이 들려왔습니다.
- '나는 네 조상들의 하느님 곧 아브라함의 하느님, 이사악의 하느님, 야곱의 하느님이다.' 이 음성을 듣고 모세는 두려워서 감히 바라보지도 못하였습니다.
- 그러자 주께서는 다시 모세에게 말씀하셨습니다. '네가 신고 있는 신을 벗어라. 네가 서 있는 곳은 거룩한 땅이다.
- 나는 내 백성이 이집트에서 학대받는 것을 똑똑히 보았고 또 그들의 신음 소리도 들었다. 그래서 나는 그들을 구해 내려고 내려온 것이다. 자, 가거라. 내가 너를 이집트로 보낸다.'
- 모세로 말하면 이스라엘 사람들이 '누가 당신을 우리의 지도자나 재판관으로 세웠단 말이오?' 하며 배척했던 사람입니다. 그런데 하느님께서는 천사를 그 가시나무 덤불에 나타나게 하시고 그의 손을 빌려 거기에 있던 모세를 이스라엘 백성의 지도자요 해방자로 보내셨습니다.

- He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
|
- 모세는 이집트 땅에서는 물론 홍해를 건널 때와 광야 생활 사십 년 동안에 여러 가지 놀라운 일과 기적을 행하면서 자기 백성을 이집트에서 구해 냈습니다.
