- What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.
- For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
- So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
- For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
- Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

- 그렇다고 하느님이 공정하지 못하다고 말할 수 있겠습니까? 절대로 그럴 수 없습니다.
- 하느님께서 모세에게 "나는 자비를 베풀고 싶은 사람에게 자비를 베풀고 동정하고 싶은 사람을 동정한다." 하고 말씀하셨듯이
- 하느님의 선택을 받고 안 받는 것은 인간의 의지나 노력에 달려 있는 것이 아니라 오직 하느님의 자비에 달려 있는 것입니다.
- 성서에는 하느님께서 파라오에게 "내가 너를 왕으로 내세운 것은 너를 시켜서 내 힘을 드러내고 내 이름이 온 세상에 널리 알려지게 하려는 것이다." 하신 말씀이 있습니다.
- 이렇게 하느님께서는 당신의 뜻대로 어떤 사람에게는 자비를 베푸시고 또 어떤 사람은 완고하게도 하십니다.

- Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?
- Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?
- Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?
- What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:
- And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

- "그렇다면 어찌하여 하느님께서 사람을 책망하십니까? 누가 능히 하느님의 뜻을 거역할 수 있겠습니까?" 하고 말할 사람도 있을 것입니다.
- 그러나 사람이 무엇이기에 감히 하느님께 따지고 드는 것입니까? 만들어진 물건이 만든 사람한테 "왜 나를 이렇게 만들었소?" 하고 말할 수 있겠습니까?
- 옹기장이가 같은 진흙덩이를 가지고 하나는 귀하게 쓸 그릇을 만들고 하나는 천하게 쓸 그릇을 만들어낼 권리가 없겠습니까?
- 하느님께서는 당신의 진노와 권능을 나타내시기를 원하시면서도 당장 부수어버려야 할 진노의 그릇을 부수지 않으시고 오랫동안 참아주셨습니다.
- 그것은 하느님께서 자비의 그릇에 베푸실 당신의 영광이 얼마나 풍성한지를 보여주시려는 것이었습니다. 그 자비의 그릇은 후에 영광을 주시려고 하느님께서 미리 만드신 것인데

- Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
- As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
- And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
- Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
- For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

- 그 자비의 그릇은 바로 우리들입니다. 하느님께서 불러주신 우리들 가운데는 유다인뿐 아니라 이방인도 있습니다.
- 호세아서에 이런 말씀이 있습니다. "내 백성이 아니었던 사람들을 내 백성이라 부르겠고 내 사랑을 받지 못하던 백성을 내 사랑하는 백성이라 부르리라.
- '너희는 내 백성이 아니다.' 하고 말씀하신 바로 그 곳에서 그들은 살아 계신 하느님의 자녀라고 불리리라."
- 그리고 이사야는 이스라엘에 관해서 이렇게 외쳤습니다. "이스라엘 자손들이 바다의 모래처럼 많을지라도 남은 자만이 구원을 얻으리라.
- 주께서는 약속하신 말씀을 신속히 그리고 엄격히 이 세상에서 다 이루시리라."

- And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.

- 또 이사야는 이렇게 예언했습니다. "전능하신 주께서 우리에게 씨를 남겨주시지 않았던들 우리는 소돔처럼 되었을 것이요, 고모라와 같이 되었으리라."
