- Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
- For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
- But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
- He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
- I would that ye all spake with tongues but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

- 힘써 남을 사랑하고 성령의 선물을 간절히 구하십시오. 특히 하느님의 말씀을 받아 전하는 은혜를 간절히 구하십시오.
- 이상한 언어를 말하는 사람은 성령의 힘으로 신비한 일을 말하는 것이므로 아무도 알아들을 수가 없습니다. 그러므로 그것은 사람들에게 말하는 것이 아니라 하느님께 말씀 드리는 것입니다.
- 그러나 말씀을 받아 전하는 사람은 사람들을 키워주고 격려해 주고 위로해 주려고 사람들에게 말하는 것입니다.
- 이상한 언어로 말하는 사람은 자기 자신을 도울 뿐이지만 말씀을 받아서 전하는 사람은 교회에 도움을 줍니다.
- 나는 여러분이 모두 이상한 언어로 말할 수 있었으면 합니다. 그러나 그보다는 하느님의 말씀을 받아 전할 수 있으면 더 좋겠습니다. 만일 이상한 언어를 해석해 주는 사람이 있어서 그것이 교회의 이익이 된다면 몰라도 그렇지 않다면 이상한 언어로 말하는 사람보다는 하느님의 말씀을 받아 전하는 사람이 더 위대합니다.

- Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
- And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
- For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
- So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
- There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.

- 형제 여러분, 내가 여러분에게 가서 이상한 언어로 말한다고 하더라도 만일 어떤 계시나 지식이나 하느님께로부터 받은 말씀이나 가르침을 전해 드리지 못한다면 내가 무슨 도움이 되겠습니까?
- 피리나 거문고 같은 생명 없는 악기도 소리는 납니다. 그러나 악보대로 분명하게 연주하지 않으면 무슨 곡이 연주되고 있는지 어떻게 알겠습니까?
- 또 나팔부는 사람이 분명한 소리를 내지 않으면 누가 전투 준비를 하겠습니까?
- 이와 같이 여러분도 이상한 언어로 알아들을 수 없는 말을 한다면 그것이 무슨 말인지를 누가 알겠습니까? 결국 여러분은 허공에다 대고 말하는 셈입니다.
- 세상에는 갖가지 말이 있지만 뜻 없는 말은 하나도 없습니다.

- Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
- Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
- Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
- For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
- What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

- 그런데 내가 어떤 말의 뜻을 알아듣지 못한다면 그런 말을 하는 사람과 나는 서로 외국인이 됩니다.
- 성령의 선물은 여러분이 갈망하는 것이니 되도록 풍성하게 받으십시오. 그러나 그것은 교회를 돕는 것이어야 합니다.
- 그러므로 이상한 언어로 말하는 사람은 그것을 해석하는 능력까지 얻으려고 기도하십시오.
- 만일 내가 이상한 언어로 기도한다면, 기도하는 것은 내 심령뿐이고 내 이성은 작용을 하지 않습니다.
- 그러면 어떻게 하는 것이 좋겠습니까? 나는 심령으로 기도하는 동시에 이성으로도 기도하겠습니다. 나는 심령으로 찬미의 노래를 부르는 동시에 이성으로도 찬미의 노래를 부르겠습니다.

- Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
- For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
- I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
- Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

- 만일 여러분이 심령으로만 감사의 기도를 드린다면 그 집회에 참석한 보통 교인들은 당신이 말하는 것을 알아듣지 못할 터이니 어떻게 그 감사의 기도 끝에 "아멘." 하고 응답할 수 있겠습니까?
- 여러분은 훌륭하게 감사의 기도를 드리지만 남에게는 아무런 도움이 되지 못합니다.
- 나는 여러분 중 어느 누구보다도 이상한 언어를 더 많이 말할 수 있다는 것을 하느님께 감사 드립니다.
- 그러나 교회에서 남을 가르치기 위해서는 이상한 언어로 일만 마디의 말을 하느니보다는 차라리 내 이성으로 다섯 마디의 말을 하고 싶습니다.
