- Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
- And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field.
- Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah's son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph's son, the recorder.
- And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
- I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

- 히즈키야 왕 제십사년에, 아시리아 왕 산헤립이 유다를 침략하여 그 모든 요새화된 성읍들을 점령하였다.
- 아시리아 왕은 라기스에서 시종장관에게 상당한 병력을 주어 히즈키야 왕이 있는 예루살렘으로 보냈다. 그는 마전터로 가는 길가 윗저수지 물길 있는 데 이르러 주둔하였다.
- 그들을 맞으러 궁내대신 힐키야의 아들 엘리아킴과 시종무관 셉나와 공보대신 아삽의 아들 요아가 나갔다.
- 시종장관이 그들에게 말하였다. "히즈키야에게 전하여라. 아시리아의 대왕께서 하시는 말씀이다. '네가 무엇을 믿고 이렇게 자신만만이냐?
- 참모도 없고 군대도 없는 주제에 입술의 빈말만으로 싸움을 이길 수 있다고 생각하느냐? 네가 무엇을 믿고 나에게 반역하느냐?

- Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
- But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
- Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
- How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
- And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

- 네가 믿는 이집트는 부러진 갈대에 불과하다. 그것을 지팡이처럼 믿는다마는 그것을 잡았다가는 도리어 손만 베일 것이다. 이집트 왕 파라오는 자기를 믿는 모든 자들에게 그렇게 대한다.
- 너희는 나에게 말하기를 너희 하느님 야훼를 믿는다고 하겠지마는 유다와 이스라엘 백성에게 예루살렘에 있는 제단 앞에서만 예배를 드려야 한다고 하며, 야훼의 산당들과 제단을 헐어버린 것이 히즈키야가 아니냐?'
- 자, 나의 주인이신 아시리아 왕과 승부를 겨루어보아라. 네가 기수만 내놓을 수 있다면 내가 너에게 말 이천 마리를 줄 터이다.
- 너에게 우리 주인의 하잘것없는 졸병 하나인들 물리칠 힘이 있겠느냐? 그러면서 이집트에서 병거나 기병 부대가 오려니 하고 있구나.
- 내가 야훼의 분부도 없이 어떻게 이 곳을 치러 올라왔겠느냐? 야훼께서 나에게 일찍이 이 땅을 쳐부수러 올라가라고 분부하셨다."

- Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
- But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
- Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
- Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
- Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

- 엘리아킴과 셉나와 요아가 시종장관에게 청하였다. "아람어로 말씀해 주시오. 우리는 아람어를 알아들을 수 있습니다. 백성이 성 위에서 듣고 있는데, 유다말로 우리에게 말씀하지 말아주시오."
- 시종장관이 대답하였다. "나의 주인께서 너희 상전이나 너희에게만 이 말을 전하라고 나를 보내신 줄 아느냐? 성 위에서 너희와 같이 제 오줌과 제 똥을 먹고 앉아 있는 자들에게도 전하라고 나를 보내신 것이다."
- 이어 시종장관은 일어서서 유다말로 크게 외쳤다. "들어라, 아시리아 대왕의 말씀이다.
- 대왕께서 말씀하신다. '히즈키야에게 속지 마라. 그가 너희를 구해 내지 못하리라.
- 그가 너희를 설득하여 야훼를 의지하자고 하고, 또 야훼가 너희를 구할 것이므로 이 성이 절대로 아시리아 왕에게 함락되지 않는다고 말하더라도 그 말을 믿지 마라.

- Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
- Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
- Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, the LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
- Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
- Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

- 히즈키야가 하는 말은 듣지 마라.' 아시리아 왕께서 말씀하신다. '나와 강화 조약을 맺자. 나에게 항복하여라. 그리하면 너희는 각기 자기가 재배하는 포도와 무화과를 먹을 수 있게 되고 자기 물통의 물을 마실 수 있게 될 것이다.
- 때가 되면 내가 와서 너희의 조국 땅과 다름없는 땅 곧 곡식과 새 포도주가 나고 떡과 과일이 넉넉한 땅에 너희를 정착시키리라.
- 히즈키야의 말을 듣지 마라. 그는 야훼가 너희를 구해 줄 것이라고 말하여 너희를 그릇 인도할 뿐이다. 그 어느 민족의 신이 아시리아 왕으로부터 자기 영토를 구하였더냐?
- 하맛과 아르밧의 신들은 어디 갔느냐? 스발와임의 신들은 어디 갔느냐? 사마리아 땅의 신들은 어디 갔느냐? 그들이 사마리아를 내 손에서 건졌더냐?
- 여러 민족의 신들 중에 자기 영토를 나에게서 구해 낸 신이 하나라도 있었느냐? 야훼가 어찌 예루살렘을 구하겠느냐?'"

- But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
- Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

- 그러나 백성들은 침묵을 지키고 아무런 대답도 하지 않았다. 적장의 말에 아무 대꾸도 하지 말라고 히즈키야 왕이 명령했기 때문이었다.
- 궁내대신 힐키야의 아들 엘리아킴과 시종무관 셉나와 공보대신 아삽의 아들 요아는 옷을 찢으며 히즈키야 왕에게 돌아가서 적의 시종장관이 한 말을 모두 보고하였다.
