- 원로인 나는 친애하는 가이오에게 이 편지를 씁니다. 나는 진정으로 그대를 사랑합니다.
- 나는 사랑하는 그대가 하는 일이 모두 다 잘 되어 나가기를 빕니다. 또 그대의 영혼과 마찬가지로 육신도 건강하기를 빕니다.
- 교우 몇 사람이 와서 그대의 진실한 생활 곧 그대가 진리를 좇아서 살고 있다는 말을 해주어서 나는 무척 기뻤습니다.
- 내 자녀들이 진리를 좇아서 살고 있다는 말을 듣는 것보다 더 기쁜 일이 어디 있겠습니까?
- 사랑하는 그대는 교우들을 위해서 특히 나그네들을 위해서 모든 일을 성실하게 처리하고 있습니다.

- Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church: whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well:
- Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
- We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellowhelpers to the truth.
- I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the preeminence among them, receiveth us not.
- Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.

- 그들은 이 곳 교우들 앞에서 그대의 사랑에 관하여 증언했습니다. 그들이 하느님의 일꾼으로 부족함이 없도록 도와서 떠나보내는 것이 좋겠습니다.
- 그들은 주님을 위해서 나선 사람들로서 이교도들에게서는 아무것도 받지 않습니다.
- 그러니 우리가 그런 사람들을 돌보아 주어야 하겠습니다. 그래야 우리가 진리를 위해서 그들과 함께 일하는 협력자가 될 것입니다.
- 나는 그 교회에 편지를 한 장 써 보냈습니다. 그런데 디오드레페가 그 교회의 우두머리가 되려는 야심을 품고 우리의 권위를 인정하려 하지 않습니다.
- 그래서 내가 가면 그가 저지르는 나쁜 일들을 낱낱이 지적하겠습니다. 그는 나쁜 말로 우리를 헐뜯고 있습니다. 그것도 부족해서 우리가 보낸 형제들을 받아들이지 않을 뿐더러 그 형제들을 받아들이려는 사람들까지도 그렇게 못하도록 방해하고 심지어는 그런 사람들을 교회 밖으로 쫓아내고 있습니다.

- 사랑하는 그대는 악한 것을 본받지 말고 선한 것을 본받으시오. 선을 행하는 사람은 하느님에게서 난 사람이며 악을 행하는 사람은 하느님을 뵙지 못한 사람입니다.
- 데메드리오는 모든 사람의 인정을 받고 있으며 진리 자체도 그를 인정해 줍니다. 그리고 우리도 그를 인정합니다. 그대는 우리의 인정이 참되다는 것을 알고 있습니다.
- 그대에게 할 말이 많지만 펜과 잉크로 써 보내고 싶지는 않습니다.
- 나는 머지않아 그대와 만나게 되기를 바랍니다. 그 때에 우리는 얼굴을 맞대고 이야기를 나누게 될 것입니다.
- 평화가 그대에게 있기를 빕니다. 여기 있는 친구들이 그대에게 문안합니다. 친구들 한 사람 한 사람에게 문안하여 주십시오.
