창세기 32:1-33:20

 야곱은 형 에서와 화해하기 위해 사람들을 보냈지만, 그들로부터 에서가 큰 무리를 이끌고 온다는 보고를 받자 두려워 떨었다. 야곱은 모든 소유를 얍복 강 건너편으로 보내고 홀로 그곳에 남아 하나님의 사자와 날이 새도록 씨름하던 끝에 환도뼈가 부러졌다. 그러나 결국 하나님의 복을 받고 이름도 이스라엘로 불리게 되었다. 에서와 화해한 야곱은 세겜에 이르러 단을 쌓았다.
  
  하나님과 씨름하는 야곱(32:1-32:32)    
 
  1. And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
  2. And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
  3. And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
  4. And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
  5. And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
  1. 야곱은 계속 길을 가다가 하나님의 천사들을 만났다.
  2. 그는 천사들을 보고 '이들은 하나님의 군대이다' 하며 그곳 이름을 '마하나임'이라 하였다.
  3. 야곱은 세일 땅 에돔에 있는 자기 형 에서에게 몇몇 종들을 먼저 보내며
  4. 이렇게 전하라고 지시하였다. '형님, 동생 야곱이 문안드립니다. 저는 지금까지 라반 외삼촌과 함께 살았는데
  5. 이제 저에게도 소와 나귀와 양과 염소와 남녀 종들이 있습니다. 내가 형님의 너그러운 사랑을 바라고 이렇게 사람을 보내 안부를 전합니다'
  1. And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
  2. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
  3. And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
  4. And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
  5. I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
  1. 그 종들은 에서에게 갔다가 돌아와서 '지금 주인의 형 에서가 주인을 만나려고 400명이나 되는 사람들을 거느리고 오고 있습니다' 하고 말하였다.
  2. 그러자 야곱은 몹시 두려워하고 번민하며 자기와 함께 있는 사람들과 양과 소와 낙타를 두 떼로 나누고
  3. '에서가 와서 한 떼를 치면 나머지 한 떼는 도망할 수 있을 것이다' 하며 혼자 중얼거렸다.
  4. 그리고서 야곱은 이렇게 기도하였다. '내 할아버지 아브라함의 하나님, 내 아버지 이삭의 하나님 여호와여, 주께서는 전에 나에게 네 고향 네 친척에게 돌아가거라. 내가 너에게 은혜를 베풀겠다 하고 말씀하셨습니다.
  5. 나는 주께서 나에게 보여 주신 모든 자비와 신실하심을 조금도 감당할 수 없습니다. 내가 지팡이 하나만 가지고 이 요단을 건넜는데 지금은 두 떼를 이루었습니다.
  1. Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
  2. And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
  3. And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
  4. Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
  5. Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
  1. 내가 주께 간절히 기도합니다. 나를 내 형 에서의 손에서 구해 주소서. 그가 와서 나와 내 처자들을 칠까 두렵습니다.
  2. 주께서는 내가 너에게 은혜를 베풀어 네 후손을 셀 수 없는 바다의 모래처럼 많게 하겠다고 말씀하셨습니다'
  3. 야곱은 거기서 밤을 새고 자기 형 에서에게 보낼 선물을 준비했는데
  4. 그것은 암염소 200마리, 수염소 20마리, 암양 200마리, 수양 20마리,
  5. 젖 짜는 낙타 30마리와 그 새끼들, 암소 40마리, 황소 10마리, 암나귀 20마리, 수나귀 10마리였다.
  1. And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
  2. And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
  3. Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
  4. And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
  5. And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
  1. 야곱은 그 짐승들을 여러 떼로 나누어 종들에게 맡기고 '너희는 각 떼마다 간격을 두어 짐승들을 몰고 먼저 가거라' 하고
  2. 제일 선두에 가는 자에게 이렇게 지시하였다. '내 형 에서가 너를 만나 네 주인은 누구며 너는 어디로 가느냐? 네 앞에 있는 이 짐승들은 누구의 것이냐? 하고 묻거든
  3. 너는 그에게 이것들은 당신의 종 야곱의 것인데 그의 주인 에서에게 보내는 선물입니다. 그리고 내 주인 야곱도 뒤에 오고 있습니다 하고 대답하여라'
  4. 그는 또 두 번째와 세 번째 가는 자와 그리고 각 떼를 따라가는 모든 자들에게도 같은 지시를 하였다 '너희도 에서를 만나거든 이와 똑같이 말하고
  5. 당신의 종 야곱이 우리 뒤에 있습니다 하고 말하라' 야곱이 이렇게 한 것은 먼저 선물을 보내 형의 감정을 누그러지게 한 다음에 그를 만나면 그가 자기를 용서할 것이라고 생각했기 때문이었다.
  1. So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
  2. And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
  3. And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
  4. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
  5. And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
  1. 그래서 야곱은 선물을 먼저 보내고 그 날 밤을 천막에서 보내게 되었다.
  2. 야곱은 밤에 일어나 두 아내와 두 여종과 그의 열 한 아들을 인도하여 얍복 나루를 건너게 하였다.
  3. 그는 그들과 그의 모든 소유를 그 시내 건너편으로 보내고
  4. 자기만 홀로 남았는데 어떤 사람이 와서 날이 새도록 야곱과 씨름하다가
  5. 자기가 이길 수 없는 것을 알고 야곱의 엉덩이를 쳤다. 그래서 그와 씨름하는 중에 야곱은 엉덩이뼈가 위골되었다.
  1. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
  2. And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
  3. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
  4. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
  5. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
  1. 그때 그 사람이 말하였다. '날이 새는데 나를 가게 하라' '당신이 나에게 축복하지 않으면 내가 당신을 놓아주지 않겠습니다'
  2. '네 이름이 무엇이냐?' '야곱입니다'
  3. '네가 하나님과 겨루고 사람과 겨루어 이겼으므로 다시는 네 이름을 야곱이라 하지 않고 '이스라엘'이라 부를 것이다'
  4. '당신의 이름을 나에게 말해 주십시오' 그러자 그 사람은 '네가 어째서 내 이름을 묻느냐?' 하며 거기서 야곱에게 축복하였다.
  5. 그래서 야곱은 '내가 하나님과 대면하고서도 죽지 않고 살아 남았다.' 하며 그 곳 이름을 '브니엘'이라 하였다
  1. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
  2. Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
  1. 그가 브니엘을 떠날 때 해가 돋았는데 그는 엉덩이뼈가 위골되었기 때문에 절뚝거렸다.
  2. 그 사람이 야곱의 엉덩이 힘줄을 쳤으므로 이스라엘 사람들은 오늘날까지도 엉덩이뼈에 붙어 있는 큰 힘줄을 먹지 않는다.
 
  에서와의 화해(33:1-33:20)    
 
  1. And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.
  2. And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.
  3. And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
  4. And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.
  5. And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.
  1. 야곱이 멀리 바라보니 에서가 400명의 사람들을 거느리고 오고 있었다. 그래서 그는 자식들을 나누어 레아와 라헬과 두 여종에게 맡기고
  2. 여종과 그들의 자식들은 앞에 세우고 레아와 그녀의 자식들은 그 다음에, 그리고 라헬과 요셉은 뒤에 두고
  3. 자기가 앞서 나아가 땅에 몸을 일곱 번 굽히면서 형에게 다가갔다.
  4. 그러자 에서가 달려와서 그를 맞으며 목을 끌어안고 입을 맞췄다. 그리고서 그들은 서로 울었다.
  5. 에서가 여자들과 아이들을 보고 '너와 함께 있는 이 사람들은 다 누구냐?' 하고 묻자 야곱은 '하나님이 나에게 은혜로 주신 자식들입니다' 하고 대답하였다.
  1. Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
  2. And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
  3. And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.
  4. And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.
  5. And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.
  1. 그때 여종들이 그 자식들과 함께 앞으로 나와 절하고
  2. 다음으로 레아와 그 자식들이, 마지막으로 요셉과 라헬이 나와서 절하였다.
  3. 그러자 에서가 다시 물었다. '내가 올 때 만난 그 짐승 떼는 무엇이냐?' '그것은 형님에게 드리는 선물입니다'
  4. '내 동생아, 나에게 있는 것도 충분하니 네 소유는 네가 가져라'
  5. '그러지 마십시오. 형님이 나에게 사랑을 베푸신다면 이 선물을 받아 주십시오. 이렇게 형님이 나를 따뜻하게 반겨 주시니 내가 형님의 얼굴을 보는 것이 꼭 하나님의 얼굴을 보는 것 같습니다.
  1. Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.
  2. And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
  3. And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
  4. Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.
  5. And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
  1. 제발 내가 형님께 가져온 이 선물을 받으십시오. 하나님이 나에게 은혜를 베풀어 주셔서 내가 필요로 하는 것은 무엇이든지 다 가지고 있습니다' 야곱이 계속 권하자 에서가 그 선물을 받고
  2. 이렇게 말하였다. '자 가자. 내가 길을 안내하겠다'
  3. '형님도 아시겠지만 애들은 연약한 데다가 새끼에게 젖을 먹이는 양과 소들도 있으니 하루만 더 심하게 몬다면 모든 짐승이 다 죽고 말 것입니다.
  4. 그러니 형님은 먼저 가십시오. 나는 앞서 가는 짐승들과 자식들에게 보조를 맞춰 천천히 가서 세일에서 형님을 뵙겠습니다'
  5. '그렇다면 내 종 몇 사람을 너와 함께 머물게 하여 너를 돕도록 하겠다' '형님, 그러실 필요는 없습니다. 형님의 호의만으로도 족합니다'
  1. So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.
  2. And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.
  3. And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.
  4. And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for an hundred pieces of money.
  5. And he erected there an altar, and called it EleloheIsrael.
  1. 그래서 그 날 에서는 세일로 돌아갔다.
  2. 그러나 야곱은 숙곳으로 가서 거기에 집을 짓고 가축 우리를 만들었는데 숙곳이란 말은 그가 오두막이란 뜻으로 붙인 이름이었다.
  3. 야곱은 메소포타미아에서 가나안의 세겜 성에 무사히 도착하여 그 성 부근에 천막을 치고
  4. 은화 7개로 자기가 천막을 친 그 밭을 세겜의 창설자인 하몰의 아들들에게서 사고
  5. 거기에 단을 세워 그 이름을 '엘-엘로헤-이스라엘'이라고 하였다.
