	사무엘상 6:1-8:22 계속되는 재앙을 견디다 못한 블레셋 방백들은 법궤를 이스라엘에 반환하기로 결정하고 예물과 함께 수레에 실어 이스라엘로 보냈다. 벧세메스에 도착한 법궤는 아비나답의 집에 안치되었고 사무엘은 백성들을 미스바에 모아 회개를 촉구했다. 사무엘의 연로함과 그 아들들의 실정으로 인해 백성들이 왕을 세워 줄 것을 요구하자 하나님께서 이를 허락하셨다.

	이스라엘로 돌아온 법궤(6:1-6:21)

And the ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.

And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us wherewith we shall send it to his place.

And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.

Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden emerods, and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.

Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.

여호와의 궤가 블레셋 땅에 있은 지 7개월이 되었을 때

블레셋 사람들이 그들의 제사장들과 점장이들을 불러놓고 물었다. '우리가 여호와의 궤를 어떻게 하면 좋겠소? 우리가 어떻게 하면 이 궤를 본래 있던 곳으로 돌려보낼 수 있는지 가르쳐 주시오.'

이스라엘 신의 궤를 돌려보내려고 하면 그냥 보내지 말고 허물을 씻는 속건제물도 함께 보내야 합니다. 그러면 병도 낫고 이스라엘 신이 계속 우리에게 벌을 주는 이유도 알게 될 것이오.'

'그렇다면 속건제물로 무엇을 보내면 되겠소?' 그러자 그들은 이렇게 대답하였다. '블레셋 각 지방 통치자들의 수효대로 악성 종기 모양으로 만든 금 다섯 덩어리와 금쥐 다섯 마리를 보내시오. 이것은 당신들과 당신들의 통치자들에게 내린 재앙이 똑같기 때문이오.

그러므로 당신들은 이런 모양의 악성 종기와 쥐를 만들어 보내고 이스라엘 신에게 찬양을 돌리시오. 그러면 그가 우리와 우리 신들과 우리 땅에 내리는 재앙을 그치게 할지도 모릅니다.

Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them:

And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.

And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.

And the men did so; and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home:

바로와 이집트 사람들처럼 고집을 피워 반항하지 마시오. 그들이 이스라엘 사람들을 떠나지 못하게 하였을 때 이스라엘의 신이 그들에게 무서운 재앙을 내리지 않았소?

그러므로 새 수레를 만들고 아직 멍에를 메어 보지 않은 젖소 두 마리를 끌어다가 수레에 매고 그 송아지는 마굿간에 매어 놓으시오.

그리고 여호와의 궤를 가져다가 수레에 싣고 종기 모양으로 만든 금덩어리와 금쥐는 상자에 담아 그 궤 옆에 두고 그 소들이 가고 싶은 대로 가도록 내버려 두시오.

그러나 잘 지켜보고 있다가 만일 그 소들이 우리 국경을 넘어서 벧-세메스로 가면 이 큰 재앙은 이스라엘의 신이 우리에게 내린 것이요, 만일 그렇지 않으면 이 재앙은 그가 내린 것이 아니라 우연히 일어난 사건으로 보아야 할 것이오.'

그래서 블레셋 사람들은 그들의 지시대로 송아지는 마굿간에 매어 놓은 채 젖소 두 마리를 끌어다가 수레에 매고

And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods.

And the kine took the straight way to the way of Bethshemesh, and went along the highway, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Bethshemesh.

And they of Bethshemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.

And the cart came into the field of Joshua, a Bethshemite, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they clave the wood of the cart, and offered the kine a burnt offering unto the LORD.

And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Bethshemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD.

여호와의 궤와 그리고 악성 종기 모양으로 만든 금덩어리와 금쥐를 담은 상자를 수레에 실었다.

그러자 그 소들은 곧장 벧-세메스를 향해 울며 나아갔고 길에서 벗어나지 않았다. 그리고 블레셋 다섯 지방 통치자들은 벧-세메스 경계까지 그들을 뒤따라갔다.

벧-세메스 사람들은 골짜기에서 밀을 베다가 궤를 보고 기뻐서 어쩔 줄을 몰랐다.

수레가 여호수아라는 사람의 밭에 들어와 큰 바위 곁에 멈추자 사람들은 수레의 나무를 패고 그 소들을 잡아 여호와께 번제로 드렸다.

레위 지파 사람들은 여호와의 궤와 그리고 금덩어리가 담긴 상자를 수레에서 내려 그 바위 위에 놓았다. 그 날 벧-세메스 사람들은 번제 외에도 다른 많은 제물을 여호와께 드렸다.

And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.

And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;

And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Bethshemite.

And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

And the men of Bethshemesh said, Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us?

블레셋 다섯 지방 통치자들은 이 모든 것을 보고 그 날 에그론으로 돌아갔다.

블레셋 사람들이 여호와께 속건제물로 드린 종기 모양의 금덩어리는 아스돗, 가사, 아스글론, 가드, 에그론에서 각각 하나씩 보낸 선물이었으며

그 금쥐는 다른 블레셋 도시, 곧 다섯 지방 통치자들이 다스리는 요새화된 성과 시골 부락들의 수효대로 바친 것이었다. 그리고 여호와의 궤를 놓았던 바위는 그 당시에 일어난 사건의 증거물로서 오늘날까지 벧-세메스 사람 여호수아의 밭에 그대로 있다.

그러나 벧-세메스 사람들이 여호와의 궤를 들여다보았기 때문에 여호와께서는 그들을 쳐서 70명을 죽였다. 그러자 벧-세메스 사람들이 통곡하며

'이 거룩하신 하나님 여호와 앞에 누가 설 수 있겠나? 우리가 여호와의 궤를 여기서 어디로 보내야 좋단 말인가!' 하고 부르짖었다.

And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjathjearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD; come ye down, and fetch it up to you.

그래서 그들은 사람들을 기럇-여아림 주민들에게 보내 '블레셋 사람들이 여호와의 궤를 도로 보내왔으니 당신들은 내려와서 이것을 가져가시오.' 하였다.

	미스바 성회(7:1-7:17)

And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.

And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.

And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

그래서 기럇-여아림 사람들은 여호와의 궤를 가지고 가서 산언덕에 사는 아비나답의 집에 두고 그의 아들 엘리아살에게 그 궤를 맡겨 지키도록 하였다.

여호와의 궤가 기럇-여아림에 들어간 지 20년이 되었고 그 동안에 모든 이스라엘 사람들은 슬퍼하며 여호와를 찾았다.

그래서 사무엘이 모든 이스라엘 백성에게 이렇게 말하였다. '여러분이 진심으로 여호와께 돌아오고자 하면 이방 신들과 아스다롯 우상들을 여러분 가운데서 제거하고 여호와만 섬기기로 작정하십시오. 그러면 그분이 여러분을 블레셋 사람에게서 구출하실 것입니다.'

그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 바알과 아스다롯 우상을 없애 버리고 여호와만 섬겼다.

그때 사무엘이 그들에게 '이스라엘 백성 여러분, 모두 미스바로 모이십시오. 내가 여러분을 위해 여호와께 기도하겠습니다.' 하고 말하였다.

And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.

And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.

And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.

And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.

And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.

그래서 그들은 미스바에 모여서 물을 길어 여호와 앞에 붓고 온종일 금식하며 '우리가 여호와께 범죄하였습니다.' 하고 자기들의 죄를 고백하였다. 그리고 사무엘은 그 곳 미스바에서 이스라엘의 사사가 되었다.

블레셋 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들이 미스바에 모였다는 말을 듣고 병력을 동원하여 그들을 치려고 올라왔다. 그러자 이스라엘 사람들은 블레셋 사람들을 두려워하여

사무엘에게 '당신은 우리를 블레셋군의 손에서 구원해 달라고 우리 하나님 여호와께 쉬지 말고 기도하십시오.' 하였다.

그래서 사무엘이 젖 먹는 어린 양 한 마리를 가져다가 통째로 태워 여호와께 번제를 드리고 이스라엘을 도와 달라고 부르짖자 여호와께서는 그 기도를 들어주셨다.

사무엘이 번제를 드리고 있을 때 블레셋군이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 접근해 왔으나 여호와께서 큰 천둥 소리로 그들을 혼란 속에 몰아 넣으셨다. 그래서 이스라엘군은 그들을 격퇴하고

And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.

And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.

미스바에서 벧-갈까지 계속 추격하며 그들을 쳤다.

그때 사무엘은 돌 하나를 주워 미스바와 센 사이에 세우고 '여호와께서 여기까지 우리를 도우셨다!' 하고 그 이름을 '에벤에셀'이라 불렀다.

이렇게 해서 블레셋 사람들은 굴복하고 다시는 이스라엘 땅에 쳐들어오지 못했는데 이것은 여호와께서 사무엘이 살아 있는 동안 그들을 막으셨기 때문이었다.

그래서 이스라엘 사람은 블레셋군에게 빼앗겼던 에그론과 가드 사이의 모든 성들을 되찾았다. 그리고 이스라엘과 아모리 사람 사이에도 평화가 있었다.

사무엘은 평생 동안 이스라엘의 지도자로 일하였다.

And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.

And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

그는 해마다 벧엘과 길갈과 미스바로 순회하면서 그 곳의 모든 소송 문제를 처리해 주고

다시 자기 집이 있는 라마로 돌아왔는데 그는 거기서도 이스라엘 사람들의 소송 문제를 해결해 주었다. 그리고 사무엘은 여호와를 위해 그 곳에 단을 쌓았다.

	왕을 요구하는 이스라엘(8:1-8:22)

And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.

And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

이제 사무엘은 많이 늙었다. 그래서 그는 자기 아들들을 이스라엘의 사사로 세웠는데

장남은 요엘이며 차남은 아비야였다. 그들은 브엘세바에서 사사가 되었으나

자기 아버지와 같지 않아서 돈을 탐하여 뇌물을 받고 재판 업무를 공정하게 처리하지 않았다.

그래서 이스라엘의 모든 장로들이 모여서 라마에 있는 사무엘에게 찾아가

이렇게 말하였다. '보십시오. 이제 당신은 늙으셨고 당신의 아들들은 당신의 행위를 본받지 않고 있습니다. 그러니 다른 나라들과 같이 우리에게도 왕을 세워 우리를 다스리게 하십시오.'

But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

사무엘은 왕을 세워 달라는 그들의 요구를 기쁘게 여기지 않았기 때문에 여호와께 기도하여 물어 보았다.

그러자 여호와께서 그에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. '백성들이 너에게 한 말을 다 들어주어라. 그들은 너를 버린 것이 아니라 나를 버려 더 이상 내가 그들의 왕이 되는 것을 원치 않고 있다.

내가 그들을 이집트에서 이끌어낸 그 날부터 오늘날까지 그들은 계속 나를 저버리고 다른 신들을 섬겨왔으며 이제 그들은 너에게도 똑같은 짓을 하고 있다.

이제 너는 그들의 말을 들어라. 그러나 왕을 모시는 것이 어떤 것인지 그들에게 경고해 주어라.'

그래서 사무엘은 왕을 요구하는 백성에게 여호와의 말씀을 전하며 이렇게 말하였다.

And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

여러분이 왕을 모시겠다고 계속 고집하면 그 왕은 여러분의 아들들을 징발하여 그의 전차와 말을 몰게하고 그의 전차 앞에 달리게 할 것이며

또 여러분의 아들들 중에 어떤 사람은 군 부대의 지휘관이 되게 하고, 또 어떤 사람은 종을 삼아 궁전의 밭을 갈며 추수하게 하고, 또 다른 사람은 왕의 무기와 전차의 도구를 만들게 할 것입니다.

그리고 그는 여러분의 딸들을 데리고 가서 강제로 요리시키고 빵을 굽고 향료를 만들게 할 것입니다.

그가 여러분의 밭과 포도원과 감람원 중에서 제일 좋은 것을 빼앗아 그의 신하들에게 줄 것이며

또 여러분이 추수한 수확의 십일조를 거두어 자기 관리와 신하들에게 나누어 주고

And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

여러분의 남녀 종들과 제일 좋은 소와 나귀를 끌고 가서 그의 사적인 일을 시킬 것입니다.

그리고 그는 여러분의 양떼 중 10분의 1을 빼앗아 갈 것이며 여러분은 그의 종이 될 것입니다.

그때 여러분은 여러분이 택한 바로 그 왕 때문에 눈물로 부르짖을 것이나 여호와께서는 여러분에게 응답하지 않으실 것입니다.'

그러나 백성들은 사무엘의 경고를 듣지 않고 '아닙니다. 그래도 우리는 왕이 있어야 되겠습니다.

우리는 우리 주변의 다른 나라들과 같이 되기를 원합니다. 그래야 그가 우리를 다스리며 전쟁에서 우리를 지휘하고 우리를 위해 싸울 것이 아닙니까?' 하고 우겨댔다.

And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

사무엘이 백성들의 말을 듣고 그대로 여호와께 전하자

여호와께서는 그들의 말대로 왕을 세우라고 말씀하셨다. 그래서 사무엘은 그렇게 하기로 하고 그 사람들을 모두 집으로 돌려보냈다.

	속건제(贖愆祭, 6:3) 성물을 범하거나 다른 사람에게 손해를 입혔을 때 이를 배상하고 허물을 사 함받기 위해 드리는 제사
