에스더

본서는 아하수에로 왕의 통치 기간중 포로 귀환에 참여하지 않고 바사에 있던 유대 포로민들을 배경으로 에스더라는 한 지혜로운 유대 여인을 통하여 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 대적자들의 위협에서 어떻게 보호하셨는가를 밝히고 있다.

왕후 와스디가 폐위된 후, 새로운 왕후로 간택된 에스더의 사촌 모르드개는 왕의 암살 음모를 사전에 알고 왕의 생명을 구하였다. 왕의 신임을 받던 하만은 자신에게 절하지 않은 모르드개에게 분개하여 유대 민족을 멸절시킬 것을 계획한다. 이에 에스더는 목숨을 내걸고 왕께 간청하게 되고, 모르드개의 업적과 하만의 계락이 드러나 하만은 처형되고 유대인의 승리 속에 부림절 축제가 거행된다.

	에스더 1:1-2:23 아하수에로 왕의 잔치에서 왕후 와스디는 왕의 명령을 거부함으로써 폐위되었다. 그리고 새 왕후로 에스더가 간택되었다. 모르드개는 왕을 모살하려는 두 내시의 음모를 에스더를 통해 보고하였고, 그의 이름은 궁중 일기에 기록되었다.

	와스디의 폐위(1:1-1:22)

Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinces:)

That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and princes of the provinces, being before him:

When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.

And when these days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were present in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;

이것은 인도에서부터 이디오피아까지 127도를 다스린 메디아-페르시아 제국의 크셀크세스황제 당시에 일어난 일이다.

크셀크세스황제는 수산궁에서 즉위한 지 3년 만에 성대한 잔치를 베풀고 그의 모든 신하들과 고위 관리, 그리고 메디아와 페르시아의 군 지휘관들과 각 도의 총독과 귀족들을 모두 초대하였다.

(2절과 같음)

꼬박 6개월 동안 계속된 그 잔치에서 황제는 부강한 자기 제국의 화려함과 위엄을 과시하였다.

그 잔치가 끝나자 황제는 다시 수산성에 사는 모든 일반 백성을 위해 궁전 뜰에서 7일 동안 잔치를 베풀었다.

Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.

And they gave them drink in vessels of gold, (the vessels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.

And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.

Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.

On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of Ahasuerus the king,

그 뜰에는 흰 휘장과 푸른 휘장이 쳐져 있었는데 그것들은 자색의 가는 베줄로 대리석 기둥의 은고리에 매여 있었다. 그리고 금과 은으로 만든 긴 의자들이 검고 붉고 희고 노란 갖가지 대리석이 깔린 뜰에 놓여 있었다.

황제는 황실의 술을 한없이 내놓아 모든 사람에게 모양이 각기 다른 금술잔으로 마시게 했으며

황실 관리에게 명령하여 손님들에게 술을 억지로 권하지 말고 자기들이 먹고 싶은 대로 자유롭게 마실 수 있도록 하였다.

한편 황후 와스디도 황실에 있는 여자들을 위해 잔치를 베풀었다.

잔치 마지막 날에 황제는 얼큰하게 취하자 기분이 좋아 그를 시중드는 일곱 내시 곧 므후만, 비스다, 하르보나, 빅다, 아작다, 세달, 가르가스를 불러

To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look on.

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the times, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:

And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)

What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?

황후 와스디에게 면류관을 씌워 데려오라고 명령하였다. 이것은 황후가 아름다우므로 잔치에 모인 모든 사람들에게 그녀의 미모를 보이고 싶었기 때문이었다.

그러나 황후 와스디가 내시들의 말을 듣고 오기를 거절하므로 황제는 화가 나서 견딜 수 없었다.

이 당시에 황제는 법적인 문제에 대하여 전문가들에게 물어 보는 것이 상례로 되어 있었다.

그래서 그는 자기 측근에 있는 법률 문제 담당 자문관들을 불렀다. 그들은 가르스나, 세달, 아드마다, 다시스, 메레스, 마르스나, 므무간이었으며 이들 일곱 사람은 메디아-페르시아 제국에서 가장 높은 지위를 가진 사람들이었다.

황제가 그들에게 물었다. '황후 와스디는 내시들을 통해 전한 이 크셀크세스황제의 명령에 복종하지 않았다. 이럴 경우 어떻게 하면 좋겠느냐? 법에서는 무엇이라고 규정하고 있느냐?'

And Memucan answered before the king and the princes, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princes, and to all the people that are in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus.

For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.

Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.

If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.

And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.

그러자 므무간이 대답하였다. '와스디황후는 황제에게만 잘못한 것이 아니라 황제께서 다스리시는 각도의 모든 귀족들과 백성들에게도 잘못하였습니다.

황후가 행한 일이 제국 안의 모든 부인들에게 알려지게 되면 그들이 자기 남편을 무시하며 '크셀크세스황제가 와스디황후에게 오라고 명령해도 황후는 가지 않았어요' 하고 대꾸할 것입니다.

오늘이라도 페르시아와 메디아의 귀부인들이 황후가 행한 일을 들으면 그들의 남편에게 그런 식으로 말하여 남편을 멸시할 것이며 남편들은 분노를 느낄 것입니다.

그러므로 황제 폐하께서 좋게 여기신다면 칙령을 내려 와스디를 다시는 황제 앞에 나타나지 못하게 하고 그것을 페르시아와 메디아의 국법으로 정하여 변경할 수 없게 하며 황후의 위를 그보다 나은 사람에게 주십시오.

황제의 칙령이 이 광대한 제국 곳곳에 발표되면 빈부 귀천을 막론하고 모든 부인들이 자기 남편을 존경할 것입니다.'

And the saying pleased the king and the princes; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

For he sent letters into all the king's provinces, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.

황제와 그의 모든 자문관들이 이것을 좋게 여기므로 황제는 므무간의 조언에 따라 각각 민족의 언어로 모든 도에 칙령을 내려 모든 남편은 가장으로서의 권위를 가지고 자기 집안을 다스리라고 하였다.

	왕후로 뽑힌 에스더(2:1-2:23)

After these things, when the wrath of king Ahasuerus was appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.

Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, Let there be fair young virgins sought for the king:

And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather together all the fair young virgins unto Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, unto the custody of Hege the king's chamberlain, keeper of the women; and let their things for purification be given them:

And let the maiden which pleaseth the king be queen instead of Vashti. And the thing pleased the king; and he did so.

Now in Shushan the palace there was a certain Jew, whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite;

후에 크셀크세스황제는 분노가 가라앉자 와스디가 행한 일과 자기가 내린 칙령을 곰곰이 생각하였다.

그때 황제의 자문관들이 이렇게 말하였다. '아름다운 처녀를 찾아보는 것이 어떻겠습니까?

황제 폐하께서 전국 각 도의 관리들에게 명령하여 아름다운 처녀들을 모두 수산궁으로 불러오게 하고 그들을 궁녀 담당 내시인 헤개에게 맡겨 그들의 몸을 아름답게 가꾸게 한 후에

황제께서 제일 마음에 드는 여자를 와스디 대신 황후로 삼으십시오.' 황제는 이 제안을 기쁘게 받아들여 즉시 실행하도록 하였다.

그때 수산성에 모르드개라는 유다 사람이 살고 있었다. 그는 베냐민 지파 사람으로 야일의 아들이며 시므이의 손자이고 기스의 증손이었다.

Who had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.

And he brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the maid was fair and beautiful; whom Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.

So it came to pass, when the king's commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king's house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

And the maiden pleased him, and she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king's house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.

Esther had not shewed her people nor her kindred: for Mordecai had charged her that she should not shew it.

전에 바빌론의 느부갓네살왕이 유다의 여호야긴왕과 백성을 예루살렘에서 포로로 잡아 갈 때 모르드개도 함께 잡혀갔다.

그에게는 하닷사라고도 부르고 에스더라고도 하는 사촌이 있었는데 그녀는 얼굴이 곱고 몸매가 날씬한 아름다운 처녀였다. 그 부모가 죽자 모르드개는 그녀를 자기 딸처럼 키웠다.

황제의 칙령이 반포되자 많은 처녀들이 수산성에 모여들었다. 이때 에스더도 그들과 함께 황궁으로 이끌려 가서 궁녀 담당 내시 헤개의 지시를 받았다.

헤개는 에스더를 좋게 보고 호의를 베풀어 즉시 그녀에게 화장품과 좋은 음식을 주었으며 황궁에서 뽑은 일곱 궁녀를 그녀에게 주어 시중들게 하고 그들을 가장 좋은 별궁으로 옮겼다.

에스더는 자기가 유다 사람이라는 것을 아무에게도 말하지 않았다. 이것은 모르드개가 그렇게 말하지 말라고 단단히 타일러 놓았기 때문이었다.

And Mordecai walked every day before the court of the women's house, to know how Esther did, and what should become of her.

Now when every maid's turn was come to go in to king Ahasuerus, after that she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the purifying of the women;)

Then thus came every maiden unto the king; whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king's house.

In the evening she went, and on the morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's chamberlain, which kept the concubines: she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that she were called by name.

Now when the turn of Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king's chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.

모르드개는 날마다 후궁 뜰 앞을 왔다갔다하며 에스더가 어떻게 지내는지 또 그녀에게 무슨 일이 일어날 것인지 알아보려고 하였다.

처녀들이 크셀크세스황제 앞에 나아갈 때에는 먼저 1년 동안 몸치장을 하였다. 6개월 동안은 몰약 기름을 몸에 바르고 나머지 6개월 동안은 향품과 화장품으로 몸을 아름답게 가꾸었으며

그 기간이 끝나면 차례대로 한사람씩 황제 앞에 나아갔다. 그리고 처녀가 후궁에서 황궁으로 갈 때는 그녀가 원하는 의복과 장식물을 얼마든지 주었다.

그 처녀는 저녁에 황제에게 갔다가 다음날 아침에 황제의 후궁들이 사는 궁으로 돌아와 후궁 담당 내시 사아스가스의 통제를 받게 되며 황제가 그녀를 좋아하지 않아 다시 부르지 않으면 평생 황제 앞에 나아가지 못하고 거기서 살았다.

마침내 아비하일의 딸이며 모르드개의 사촌인 에스더가 황제 앞에 나아갈 차례가 되었다. 에스더는 궁녀 담당 내시 헤개가 지시한 것 외에는 다른 것으로 치장하지 않았으나 그녀를 바라보는 모든 사람에게 호감을 주었다.

So Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.

And the king loved Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.

Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even Esther's feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.

And when the virgins were gathered together the second time, then Mordecai sat in the king's gate.

Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people; as Mordecai had charged her: for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.

크셀크세스황제 7년 10월에 에스더가 황궁으로 들어가서 황제 앞에 나아가자

황제는 다른 여자들보다 에스더를 더욱 좋아하고 사랑하여 그녀에게 면류관을 씌우고 와스디 대신 황후로 삼았다.

그리고서 황제는 에스더를 위해 큰 잔치를 베풀어 모든 대신들과 신하들을 초대하고 그날을 임시 공휴일로 정했으며 각 도에 황제의 하사품을 보냈다.

황제가 두 번째로 처녀들을 불러 모았을 때 모르드개는 정부 관리가 되어 궁궐 문 앞에 앉아 있었다.

에스더는 모르드개의 지시대로 자기가 유다 사람이라는 것을 아무에게도 말하지 않았는데 이것은 그녀가 어릴 때처럼 모르드개의 말에 순종하였기 때문이었다.

In those days, while Mordecai sat in the king's gate, two of the king's chamberlains, Bigthan and Teresh, of those which kept the door, were wroth, and sought to lay hands on the king Ahasuerus.

And the thing was known to Mordecai, who told it unto Esther the queen; and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name.

And when inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.

어느 날 모르드개가 궁궐 문 앞에 앉아 있을 때 문을 지키는 내시 빅단과 데레스가 황제에게 원한을 품고 그를 살해하려고 모의하였다.

모르드개가 그것을 알고 황후 에스더에게 그 사실을 말해 주자 에스더는 모르드개의 말을 황제에게 보고하였다.

그래서 황제는 일의 진상을 조사하여 그 보고가 사실임을 알고 그 두 사람을 나무에 매달아 처형시켰으며 이 모든 일은 황제가 보는 데서 궁중 일기에 기록되었다.
