- Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
- And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
- And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
- Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
- And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

- 대제사장이 스데반에게 물었다. "이것이 사실이오?"
- 스데반이 말하였다. "부형 여러분, 내 말을 들어보십시오. 우리 조상 아브라함이 하란에 거주하기 전에, 아직 메소포타미아에 있을 때에, 영광의 하나님께서 그에게 나타나셔서 말씀하시기를
- '너는 네 고향과 친척을 떠나서, 어디든지 내가 지시하는 땅으로 가거라' 하셨습니다.
- 그래서 그는 갈대아 사람들의 땅을 떠나 하란으로 가서, 거기서 살았습니다. 그의 아버지가 죽은 뒤에, 하나님께서 그를 하란에서 지금 여러분이 사는 이 땅으로 옮기셨습니다.
- 그러나 하나님께서는 여기에서 유산으로 물려줄 손바닥만한 땅도 그에게 주지 않으셨습니다. 아브라함에게 자식이 없는데도, 하나님께서는 그와 그의 후손들에게 이 땅을 소유로 주시겠다고 약속하셨습니다.

- And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
- And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
- And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
- And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
- And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

- 그리고 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. '네 후손들은 외국 땅에서 나그네가 되어 사백 년 동안 종살이를 하고 학대를 받을 것이다.'
- 또 하나님께서 말씀하시기를 '그러나 그들을 종으로 부리는 그 민족을 내가 심판하겠고, 그 뒤에 그들은 빠져 나와서, 이곳에서 나를 예배할 것이다' 하셨습니다.
- 그리고 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 할례의 언약을 주셨습니다. 그래서 아브라함은 이삭을 낳고, 여드레째 되는 날에 그에게 할례를 행하고, 이삭은 야곱에게 또 야곱은 열두 족장에게 할례를 행하였습니다.
- 그런데 그 족장들은 요셉을 시기하여, 이집트에다 팔아 넘겼습니다. 그러나 하나님께서 그와 함께 하셔서,
- 모든 환난에서 그를 건져내시고, 그에게 은총과 지혜를 주셔서, 이집트의 바로 왕에게 총애를 받게 하셨습니다. 바로는 그를 총리로 세워서, 이집트와 자기 온 집을 다스리게 하였습니다.

- Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
- But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
- And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
- Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
- So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

- 그 때에 이집트와 가나안 온 지역에 흉년이 들어서 재난이 극심하였는데, 우리 조상들은 먹을거리를 구할 수 없었습니다.
- 야곱이 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 소문을 듣고서, 우리 조상들을 처음으로 거기로 보냈습니다.
- 그들이 두 번째 갔을 때에, 요셉이 그의 형들에게 자기를 알리니, 이 일로 말미암아 요셉의 가족 관계가 바로에게 알려졌습니다.
- 요셉이 사람을 보내서, 그의 아버지 야곱과 모든 친족 일흔다섯 사람을 모셔 오게 하였습니다.
- 야곱이 이집트로 내려가서, 그도 거기서 살다가 죽고, 우리 조상들도 살다가 죽었습니다.

- And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
- But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
- Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
- The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
- In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

- 그리고 그들의 유해는 나중에 세겜으로 옮겨서, 전에 아브라함이 세겜의 하몰 자손에게서 은을 주고 산 무덤에 묻었습니다.
- 하나님께서 아브라함에게 약속하신 때가 가까이 왔을 때에, 그 백성은 이집트에서 늘어나고 불어났습니다.
- 마침내, 요셉을 알지 못하는 다른 임금이 이집트의 왕위에 올랐습니다.
- 이 임금이 우리 겨레에게 교활한 정책을 써서, 우리 조상들을 학대하되, 갓난아기들을 내다 버리게 하여서, 살아남지 못하게 하였습니다.
- 바로 이 때에 모세가 태어났습니다. 그는 용모가 아주 잘 생긴 아기였습니다. 그의 부모는 그를 석 달 동안 몰래 집에서 길렀습니다.

- And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
- And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
- And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
- And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
- For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

- 그 뒤에 어쩔 수 없어서 내다 버렸는데, 바로의 딸이 데려다가 자기 아들로 삼아서 길렀습니다.
- 모세는 이집트 사람의 모든 지혜를 배워서, 그 하는 말과 하는 일에 능력이 있었습니다.
- 모세가 마흔 살이 되었을 때에, 그의 마음에 자기 동족인 이스라엘 사람의 사정을 살펴 볼 생각이 났습니다.
- 어느 날 그는 자기 동족 한 사람이 억울한 일을 당하는 것을 보고, 그의 편을 들어, 이집트 사람을 때려 죽여서, 압박받는 사람의 원한을 풀어 주었습니다.
- 그는 [자기] 동포가 하나님이 자기 손을 빌어서 그들을 구원하여 주신다는 것을 깨달을 것으로 생각하였는데, 그들은 깨닫지 못하였습니다.

- And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
- But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
- Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
- Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
- And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

- 이튿날 모세는 동족들끼리 서로 싸우는 자리에 나타나서, 그들을 화해시키려고 하여 말하기를 '이 사람들아, 그대들은 한 형제가 아닌가? 그런데 어찌하여 서로 해하는가?' 하였습니다.
- 그런데 동료에게 해를 입히던 사람이 모세를 떠밀고서 이렇게 말하였습니다. '누가 너를 우리의 지도자와 재판관으로 세웠느냐?
- 어제는 이집트 사람을 죽이더니, 오늘은 또 나를 그렇게 죽이려 하는가?'
- 이 말을 듣고서, 모세는 도망하여, 미디안 땅에서 나그네가 되었습니다. 거기서 그는 아들 둘을 낳았습니다.
- 사십 년이 지난 뒤에, 천사가 시내 산 광야에서 가시나무 떨기 불길 속에서 모세에게 나타났습니다.

- When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,
- Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
- Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
- I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
- This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

- 모세가 이 광경을 보고 기이하게 여겨서, 자세히 보려고 가까이 가는데, 주님의 음성이 들렸습니다.
- '나는 네 조상들의 하나님, 곧 아브라함의 하나님, 이삭의 하나님, 야곱의 하나님이다.' 모세는 두려워서 감히 바라보지 못하였습니다.
- 그 때에 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨습니다. '네 신발을 벗어라. 네가 서 있는 곳은 거룩한 땅이다.
- 나는 이집트에 있는 내 백성이 학대받는 것을 분명히 보았고, 또 그들이 신음하는 소리를 들었다. 그러므로 나는 그들을 구원하려고 내려왔다. 이제 내가 너를 이집트로 보내니, 너는 가거라.'
- 이 모세로 말하면, 이스라엘 백성이 '누가 너를 우리의 지도자와 재판관으로 세웠느냐?' 하고 배척한 사람인데, 하나님께서는 바로 이 모세를 가시나무 떨기 속에 나타난 천사의 능한 손길을 붙여 지도자와 해방자로 세워서 그들에게로 보내셨습니다.

- He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

- 이 사람이 이집트 땅과 홍해에서 놀라운 일과 표징을 행하여 그들을 이끌어냈으며, 사십 년 동안 광야에서도 그러한 일을 행하였습니다.
