	열왕기상 19:1-20:21 갈멜 산상의 대승으로 우상을 타파하고 야웨 신앙을 재건할 수 있으리라 기대했던 엘리야는 오히려 이세벨이 더 혹독한 보복 행위에 나서자 심히 낙심하여 도피하였다. 실의와 비탄에 잠겨 있던 엘리야는 호렙 산에서 하나님을 만나 위로를 받고 새로운 힘과 사명을 부여받았다. 한편 아람 왕 벤하닷이 사마리아를 침공했지만, 아합군은 한 선지자의 도움으로 대승을 거두었다.

	호렙 산에서 하나님을 만남(19:1-19:21)

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

아합은, 엘리야가 한 모든 일과, 그가 칼로 모든 예언자들을 죽인 일을, 낱낱이 이세벨에게 알려 주었다.

그러자 이세벨은 엘리야에게 심부름꾼을 보내어 말하였다. "네가 예언자들을 죽였으니, 나도 너를 죽이겠다. 내가 내일 이맘때까지 너를 죽이지 못하면, 신들에게서 천벌을 달게 받겠다. 아니, 그보다 더한 재앙이라도 그대로 받겠다."

엘리야는 두려워서 급히 일어나, 목숨을 살리려고 도망하여, 유다의 브엘세바로 갔다. 그 곳에 자기 시종을 남겨 두고,

자신은 홀로 광야로 들어가서, 하룻길을 더 걸어 어떤 로뎀 나무 아래로 가서, 거기에 앉아서, 죽기를 간청하며 기도하였다. "주님, 이제는 더 바랄 것이 없습니다. 나의 목숨을 거두어 주십시오. 나는 내 조상보다 조금도 나을 것이 없습니다."

그런 다음에, 그는 로뎀 나무 아래에 누워서 잠이 들었는데, 그 때에 한 천사가, 일어나서 먹으라고 하면서, 그를 깨웠다.

And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

엘리야가 깨어 보니, 그의 머리맡에는 뜨겁게 달군 돌에다가 구워 낸 과자와 물 한 병이 놓여 있었다. 그는 먹고 마신 뒤에, 다시 잠이 들었다.

주님의 천사가 두 번째 와서, 그를 깨우면서 말하였다. "일어나서 먹어라. 갈 길이 아직도 많이 남았다."

엘리야는 일어나서, 먹고 마셨다. 그 음식을 먹고, 힘을 얻어서, 밤낮 사십 일 동안을 걸어, 하나님의 산인 호렙 산에 도착하였다.

엘리야는 거기에 있는 동굴에 이르러, 거기에서 밤을 지냈다. 그 때에 주님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "엘리야야, 너는 여기에서 무엇을 하고 있느냐?"

엘리야가 대답하였다. "나는 이제까지 주 만군의 하나님만 열정적으로 섬겼습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 주님과 맺은 언약을 버리고, 주님의 제단을 헐었으며, 주님의 예언자들을 칼로 쳐서 죽였습니다. 이제 나만 홀로 남아 있는데, 그들은 내 목숨마저도 없애려고 찾고 있습니다."

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

주님께서 말씀하셨다. "이제 곧 나 주가 지나갈 것이니, 너는 나가서, 산 위에, 주 앞에 서 있어라." 크고 강한 바람이 주님 앞에서 산을 쪼개고, 바위를 부수었으나, 그 바람 속에 주님께서 계시지 않았다.

그 바람이 지나가고 난 뒤에 지진이 일었지만, 그 지진 속에도 주님께서 계시지 않았다. 지진이 지나가고 난 뒤에 불이 났지만, 그 불 속에도 주님께서 계시지 않았다. 그 불이 난 뒤에, 부드럽고 조용한 소리가 들렸다.

엘리야는 그 소리를 듣고서, 외투 자락으로 얼굴을 감싸고 나가서, 동굴 어귀에 섰다. 바로 그 때에 그에게 소리가 들려 왔다. "엘리야야, 너는 여기에서 무엇을 하고 있느냐?"

엘리야가 대답하였다. "나는 이제까지 주 만군의 하나님만 열정적으로 섬겼습니다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 주님과 맺은 언약을 버리고, 주님의 제단을 헐었으며, 주님의 예언자들을 칼로 쳐죽였습니다. 이제 나만 홀로 남아 있는데, 그들은 내 목숨마저도 없애려고 찾고 있습니다."

주님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 돌이켜, 광야길로 해서 다마스쿠스로 가거라. 거기에 이르거든, 하사엘에게 기름을 부어서, 시리아의 왕으로 세우고,

And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.

And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?

또 님시의 아들 예후에게 기름을 부어서, 이스라엘의 왕으로 세워라. 그리고 아벨므홀라 출신인 사밧의 아들 엘리사에게 기름을 부어서, 네 뒤를 이을 예언자로 세워라.

하사엘의 칼을 피해서 도망하는 사람은 예후가 죽일 것이고, 예후의 칼을 피해서 도망하는 사람은 엘리사가 죽일 것이다.

그러나 나는 이스라엘에 칠천 명을 남겨 놓을 터인데, 그들은 모두 바알에게 무릎을 꿇지도 아니하고, 입을 맞추지도 아니한 사람이다."

엘리야가 그 곳을 떠나서, 길을 가다가, 사밧의 아들 엘리사와 마주쳤다. 엘리사는 열두 겨릿소를 앞세우고 밭을 갈고 있었다. 열한 겨리를 앞세우고, 그는 열두째 겨리를 끌고서, 밭을 갈고 있었다. 엘리야가 엘리사의 곁으로 지나가면서, 자기의 외투를 그에게 던져 주었다.

그러자 엘리사는 소를 버려 두고, 엘리야에게로 달려와서 말하였다. "아버지와 어머니에게 작별 인사를 드린 뒤에, 선생님을 따르겠습니다." 그러자 엘리야가 말하였다. "돌아가거라. 내가 네게 무엇을 하였기에 그러느냐?"

And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.

엘리사는 엘리야를 떠나 돌아가서, 겨릿소를 잡고, 소가 메던 멍에를 불살라서 그 고기를 삶고, 그것을 백성에게 주어서 먹게 하였다. 그런 다음에, 엘리사는 곧 엘리야를 따라가서, 그의 제자가 되었다.

	아람과의 전쟁(20:1-20:21)

And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots; and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.

And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Benhadad,

Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.

And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.

And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Benhadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;

시리아 왕 벤하닷은 군대를 모두 모았다. 지방 영주 서른두 명과 기마병과 병거들이 모이자, 그는 올라가서, 사마리아 성을 포위하고, 공격하였다.

그는 그 성 안에 있는 이스라엘 왕 아합에게 사절들을 보내어,

그에게 말하였다. "나 벤하닷이 말한다. 너의 은과 금은 모두 나의 것이다. 그리고 네 아리따운 아내들과 자녀도 모두 나의 것이다."

이스라엘 왕이 회답을 보내어 말하였다. "나의 상전이신 임금님, 임금님의 말씀대로, 나와 내가 소유하고 있는 것은 모두 임금님의 것입니다."

사절들이 다시 아합에게 와서, 벤하닷의 말을 전하였다. "나 벤하닷이 말한다. 내가 전에 사절을 보내어서 전달한 것은, 너의 은과 금과 아내들과 자녀들을 모두 나에게로 보내라는 말이었다.

Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.

Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.

And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.

Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.

And Benhadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.

내일 이맘때쯤에 내가 내 신하들을 보내겠다. 그들이 네 집과 신하들의 집을 뒤져서, 그들의 눈에 드는 것은 무엇이나 가져 올 것이니, 그리 알아라."

그래서 이스라엘 왕은 나라 안의 모든 원로들을 모아 놓고 의논하였다. "벤하닷이라는 사람이 꾀하고 있는 일이 얼마나 악한 일인지, 잘 생각해 보시오. 그가 나에게 왕비들과 자녀들을 내놓으라고 하고, 또 은과 금까지 요구하고 있는데, 나로서는 이것을 거절할 수가 없소."

그러나 모든 원로와 백성들은 왕에게, 벤하닷의 말을 듣지도 말고, 요구한 것을 보내지도 말라고 간언하였다.

그래서 그는 벤하닷의 사절들에게 말하였다. "임금님께 가서, 첫 번째 요구는 내가 듣겠지만, 두 번째 요구는 내가 들어 줄 수 없다고 전하시오." 사절들은 돌아가서, 그대로 보고하였다.

벤하닷은 다시 전갈을 보내어서 말하였다. "내가 네 사마리아 성을 잿더미로 만들어서, 깨어진 조각 하나도 남지 않게 하겠다. 내가 이끄는 군인들이, 자기들의 손에 깨어진 조각 하나라도 주울 수 있으면, 신들이 나에게, 천벌이 아니라 그보다 더한 재앙을 내려도, 내가 달게 받겠다."

And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.

And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.

And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.

And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.

Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.

이스라엘 왕이 회신을 보냈다. "너의 왕에게 가서, 참 군인은 갑옷을 입을 때에 자랑하지 아니하고, 갑옷을 벗을 때에 자랑하는 법이라고 일러라."

벤하닷은 지방 영주들과 함께 막사에서 술을 마시고 있다가, 이 말을 듣고는, 신하들에게 공격 준비를 갖추라고 명령을 내렸다. 그들은 곧 사마리아 성을 공격할 준비를 갖추었다.

그 때에 예언자 한 사람이 이스라엘 왕 아합에게 와서 말하였다. "나 주가 말한다. 네가 이렇게 큰 군대를 본 적이 있느냐? 그러나 내가 오늘 그들을 네 손에 넘겨 줄 것이니, 너는, 내가 주인 줄 알게 될 것이다."

아합이 물었다. "진 앞에는 누가 섭니까?" 예언자가 대답하였다. "주님께서 말씀하시기를, 지방장관들의 젊은 부하들을 앞세우라고 하셨습니다." 그러자 아합은 다시 물었다. "누가 총지휘를 합니까?" 그 예언자가 대답하였다. "임금님이십니다."

그래서 아합이 지방장관들의 젊은 부하들을 점검하여 보니, 그들은 모두 이백서른두 명이었다. 그런 다음에, 그가 이스라엘 군대를 모두 점검하여 보니, 모두 칠천 명이었다.

And they went out at noon. But Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.

And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Benhadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.

And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.

So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.

And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Benhadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.

정오가 되자, 아합의 군대가 공격을 시작하였다. 그 때에 벤하닷은 자기를 돕는 지방 영주 서른두 명과 함께 막사에서 술에 취해 있었다.

지방장관들의 젊은 부하들이 먼저 공격을 시작하였다. 벤하닷의 정찰병들이 벤하닷에게, 적군들이 사마리아 성에서 나오고 있다고 보고하였다.

보고를 받은 벤하닷은, 그들이 화친을 하러 나왔더라도 사로잡고, 싸움을 하러 나왔더라도 사로잡으라고 명령하였다.

그러나 지방장관의 젊은 부하들과 그들을 뒤따르는 군대는 이미 성읍 바깥으로 나와서,

저마다 닥치는 대로 벤하닷의 군대를 무찔렀다. 그래서 시리아 군인들은 다 도망하였고, 이스라엘 군대가 그들을 추격하였다. 시리아 왕 벤하닷도 기병들과 함께 말을 타고 도망하였다.

And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.

이렇게 해서 이스라엘 왕은, 첫 싸움에서 많은 말과 병거를 격파하고, 시리아 군대를 크게 무찔렀다.
