- The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him.
- What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?
- Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings.
- It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:
- Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

- 르무엘 왕의 잠언, 곧 그의 어머니가 그에게 교훈한 말씀이다.
- 내 아들아, 내가 무엇을 말할까? 내 태에서 나온 아들아, 내가 무엇을 말할까? 서원을 하고 얻은 아들아, 내가 무엇을 말할까?
- 여자에게 너의 힘을 쓰지 말아라. 여자는 임금도 망하게 할 수 있으니, 여자에게 너의 길을 맡기지 말아라.
- 르무엘아, 임금에게 적합하지 않은 일이 있다. 포도주를 마시는 것은 임금에게 적합한 일이 아니다. 독주를 좋아하는 것은 통치자들에게 적합한 일이 아니다.
- 술을 마시면 법을 잊어버리고, 억눌린 사람들에게 판결을 불리하게 내릴까 두렵다.

- Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.
- Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.
- Open thy mouth for the dumb in the cause of all such as are appointed to destruction.
- Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

- 독한 술은 죽을 사람에게 주고, 포도주는 마음이 아픈 사람에게 주어라.
- 그가 그것을 마시고 자기의 가난을 잊을 것이고, 자기의 고통을 더 이상 기억하지 않을 것이다.
- 너는 벙어리처럼 할 말을 못하는 사람과 더불어, 고통 속에 있는 사람들의 송사를 변호하여 입을 열어라.
- 너는 공의로운 재판을 하고, 입을 열어, 억눌린 사람과 궁핍한 사람들의 판결을 바로 하여라.
