  1. And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
  2. And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
  3. And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
  4. The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
  5. And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
  1. They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him.
  2. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you authority to do this?"
  3. Jesus replied, "I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
  4. John's baptism--was it from heaven, or from men? Tell me!"
  5. They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'
  1. But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
  2. And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
  1. But if we say, 'From men'...." (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
  2. So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

  1. And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
  2. And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
  3. And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
  4. And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.
  5. And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.
  1. He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey.
  2. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.
  3. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
  4. Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully.
  5. He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
  1. Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
  2. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be our's.
  3. And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
  4. What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.
  5. And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:
  1. "He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
  2. "But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'
  3. So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
  4. "What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.
  5. Haven't you read this scripture: " 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;
  1. This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
  2. And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
  3. And they send unto him certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to catch him in his words.
  4. And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
  5. Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.
  1. the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes'?"
  2. Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.
  3. Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words.
  4. They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
  5. Should we pay or shouldn't we?" But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it."
  1. And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.
  2. And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.
  1. They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?" "Caesar's," they replied.
  2. Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's." And they were amazed at him.
