  1. Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
  2. Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
  3. They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
  4. Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
  5. That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
  1. Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover.
  2. So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?"
  3. "If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
  4. Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." "But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected.
  5. This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
  1. Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
  2. Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
  3. Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
  4. Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
  5. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
  1. Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
  2. "Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
  3. "Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"
  4. Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
  5. "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
  1. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
  2. But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
  3. Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
  1. "What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him.
  2. But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?"
  3. They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion.

  1. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
  2. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
  3. And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
  4. Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
  5. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
  1. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
  2. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe
  3. and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him in the face.
  4. Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."
  5. When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"
  1. When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
  2. The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
  3. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
  4. And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
  5. Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
  1. As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."
  2. The Jews insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."
  3. When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
  4. and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
  5. "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"
  1. Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
  2. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
  3. When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
  4. And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
  5. But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
  1. Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
  2. From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar."
  3. When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
  4. It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.
  5. But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.
  1. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
  1. Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
