	사무엘상 3:1-5:12 하나님께서 어린 사무엘을 부르셔서 엘리 집안의 파멸을 예고하셨고 사무엘은 이것을 엘리에게 말했다. 이스라엘은 블레셋과의 전투에서 패하자 하나님의 궤를 전쟁터로 가져왔으나, 오히려 법궤마저 빼앗기고 엘리의 두 아들들도 죽고 말았다. 그 소식을 들은 엘리는 충격으로 죽었다. 블레셋으로 옮겨진 법궤가 가는 곳마다 큰 재앙이 임했다.

	부름받은 사무엘(3:1-3:21)

And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;

And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;

That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.

And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.

少年サムエルはエリの前で主に仕えていた．そのころ，主のことばはまれにしかなく，幻も示されなかった．

その日，エリは自分の所で寢ていた． ··彼の目はかすんできて，見えなくなっていた． ··

神のともしびは，まだ消えていず，サムエルは，神の箱の安置されている主の宮で寢ていた．

And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.

Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.

And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.

Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.

主はもう一度，サムエルを呼ばれた．サムエルは起きて，エリのところに行き，「はい．ここにおります．私をお呼びになったので．」と言った．エリは，「私は呼ばない．わが子よ．歸って，おやすみ．」と言った．

サムエルはまだ，主を知らず，主のことばもまだ，彼に示されていなかった．

主が三度目にサムエルを呼ばれたとき，サムエルは起きて，エリのところに行き，「はい．ここにおります．私をお呼びになったので．」と言った．そこでエリは，主がこの少年を呼んでおられるということを悟った．

それで，エリはサムエルに言った．「行って，おやすみ．今度呼ばれたら，『主よ．お話しください．しもべは聞いております．』と申し上げなさい．」サムエルは行って，自分の所で寢た．

そのうちに主が來られ，そばに立って，これまでと同じように，「サムエル．サムエル．」と呼ばれた．サムエルは，「お話しください．しもべは聞いております．」と申し上げた．

And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.

In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.

For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

主はサムエルに仰せられた．「見よ．わたしは，イスラエルに一つの事をしようとしている．それを聞く者はみな，二つの耳が鳴るであろう．

その日には，エリの家についてわたしが語ったことをすべて，初めから終わりまでエリに果たそう．

わたしは彼の家を永遠にさばくと彼に告げた．それは自分の息子たちが，みずからのろいを招くようなことをしているのを知りながら，彼らを戒めなかった罪のためだ．

だから，わたしはエリの家について誓った．エリの家の咎は，いけにえによっても，穀物のささげ物によっても，永遠に償うことはできない．」

サムエルは朝まで眠り，それから主の宮のとびらをあけた．サムエルは，この默示についてエリに語るのを恐れた．

Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I.

And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee.

And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.

And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.

And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

ところが，エリはサムエルを呼んで言った．「わが子サムエルよ．」サムエルは，「はい．ここにおります．」と答えた．

エリは言った．「おまえにお告げになったことは，どんなことだったのか．私に隱さないでくれ．もし，おまえにお告げになったことばの一つでも私に隱すなら，神がおまえを幾重にも罰せられるように．」

それでサムエルは，すべてのことを話して，何も隱さなかった．エリは言った．「その方は主だ．主がみこころにかなうことをなさいますように．」

サムエルは成長した．主は彼とともにおられ，彼のことばを一つも地に落とされなかった．

こうして全イスラエルは，ダンからベエル · シェバまで，サムエルが主の預言者に任じられたことを知った．

And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.

主は再びシロで現われた．主のことばによって，主がご自身をシロでサムエルに現わされたからである．

	블레셋과의 전쟁(4:1-4:22)

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

サムエルのことばが全イスラエルに行き渡ったころ，イスラエルはペリシテ人を迎え擊つために戰いに出て，エベン · エゼルのあたりに陣を敷いた．ペリシテ人はアフェクに陣を敷いた．

ペリシテ人はイスラエルを迎え擊つ陣ぞなえをした．戰いが始まると，イスラエルはペリシテ人に打ち負かされ，約四千人が野の陣地で打たれた．

民が陣營に戾って來たとき，イスラエルの長老たちは言った．「なぜ主は，きょう，ペリシテ人の前でわれわれを打ったのだろう．シロから主の契約の箱をわれわれのところに持って來よう．そうすれば，それがわれわれの眞中に來て，われわれを敵の手から救おう．」

そこで民はシロに人を送った．彼らはそこから，ケルビムに座しておられる万軍の主の契約の箱をかついで來た．エリのふたりの息子，ホフニとピネハスも，神の契約の箱といっしょにそこに來た．

主の契約の箱が陣營に着いたとき，全イスラエルは大歡聲をあげた．それで地はどよめいた．

And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

ペリシテ人は，その歡聲を聞いて，「ヘブル人の陣營の，あの大歡聲は何だろう．」と言った．そして，主の箱が陣營に着いたと知ったとき，

ペリシテ人は，「神が陣營に來た．」と言って，恐れた．そして言った．「ああ，困ったことだ．今まで，こんなことはなかった．

ああ，困ったことだ．だれがこの力ある神¿の手から，われわれを救い出してくれよう．これらの神¿は，荒野で，ありとあらゆる災害をもってエジプトを打った神¿だ．

さあ，ペリシテ人よ．奮い立て．男らしくふるまえ．さもないと，ヘブル人がおまえたちに仕えたように，おまえたちがヘブル人に仕えるようになる．男らしくふるまって戰え．」

こうしてペリシテ人は戰ったので，イスラエルは打ち負かされ，おのおの自分たちの天幕に逃げた．そのとき，非常に激しい疫病が起こり，イスラエルの步兵三万人が倒れた．

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

神の箱は奪われ，エリのふたり息子，ホフニとピネハスは死んだ．

その日，ひとりのベニヤミン人が，戰場から走って來て，シロに着いた．その着物は裂け，頭には土をかぶっていた．

彼が着いたとき，エリは道のそばに設けた席にすわって，見張っていた．神の箱のことを氣づかっていたからである．この男が町にはいって敗戰を知らせたので，町中こぞって泣き叫んだ．

エリが，この泣き叫ぶ聲を聞いて，「この ¿¿しい聲は何だ．」と尋ねると，この者は大急ぎでやって來て，エリに知らせた．

エリは九十八歲で，その目はこわばり，何も見えなくなっていた．

And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

その男はエリに言った．「私は戰場から來た者です．私は，きょう，戰場から逃げて來ました．」するとエリは，「狀況はどうか．わが子よ．」と聞いた．

この知らせを持って來た者は答えて言った．「イスラエルはペリシテ人の前から逃げ，民のうちに打たれた者が多く出ました．それにあなたのふたりの子息，ホフニとピネハスも死に，神の箱は奪われました．」

彼が神の箱のことを告げたとき，エリはその席から門のそばにあおむけに落ち，首を折って死んだ．年寄りで，からだが重かったからである．彼は四十年間，イスラエルをさばいた．

彼の嫁，ピネハスの妻は身ごもっていて，出産間近であったが，神の箱が奪われ，しゅうとと，夫が死んだという知らせを聞いたとき，陣痛が起こり，身をかがめて子を産んだ．

彼女が死にかけているので，彼女の世話をしていた女たちが，「しっかりしなさい．男の子が生まれましたよ．」と言ったが，彼女は答えもせず，氣にも留めなかった．

And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

彼女は，「榮光がイスラエルから去った．」と言って，その子をイ · カボデと名づけた．これは神の箱が奪われたこと，それに，しゅうとと，夫のことをさしたのである．

彼女は，「榮光はイスラエルを去りました．神の箱が奪われたから．」と言った．

	법궤로 인한 블레셋의 재앙(5:1-5:12)

And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.

When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

ペリシテ人は神の箱を奪って，それをエベン · エゼルからアシュドデに運んだ．

それからペリシテ人は神の箱を取って，それをダゴンの宮に運び，ダゴンのかたわらに安置した．

アシュドデの人たちが，翌日，朝早く起きて見ると，ダゴンは主の箱の前に，地にうつぶせになって倒れていた．そこで彼らはダゴンを取り，それをもとの所に戾した．

次の日，朝早く彼らが起きて見ると，やはり，ダゴンは主の箱の前に，地にうつぶせになって倒れていた．ダゴンの頭と兩腕は切り離されて敷居のところにあり，ダゴンの胴體だけが，そこに殘っていた．

それで，ダゴンの祭司たちや，ダゴンの宮に行く者はだれでも，今日に至るまで，アシュドデにあるダゴンの敷居を踏まない．

But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.

And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.

Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

さらに主の手はアシュドデの人たちの上に重くのしかかり，アシュドデとその地域の人¿とを腫物で打って脅かした．

アシュドデの人¿は，この有樣を見て言った．「イスラエルの神の箱を，私たちのもとにとどめておいてはならない．その神の手が私たちと，私たちの神ダゴンを，ひどいめに會わせるから．」

それで彼らは人をやり，ペリシテ人の領主を全部そこに集め，「イスラエルの神の箱をどうしたらよいでしょうか．」と尋ねた．彼らは，「イスラエルの神の箱をガテに移したらよかろう．」と答えた．そこで彼らはイスラエルの神の箱を移した．

それがガテに移されて後，主の手はこの町に下り，非常な大恐慌を引き起こし，この町の人¿を，上の者も下の者もみな打ったので，彼らに腫物ができた．

そこで，彼らは神の箱をエクロンに送った．神の箱がエクロンに着いたとき，エクロンの人たちは大聲で叫んで言った．「私たちのところにイスラエルの神の箱を回して，私たちと，この民を殺すのか．」

So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

そこで彼らは人をやり，ペリシテ人の領主を全部集めて，「イスラエルの神の箱を送って，もとの所に戾っていただきましょう．私たちと，この民とを殺すことがないように．」と言った．町中に死の恐慌があったからである．神の手は，そこに非常に重くのしかかっていた．

死ななかった者も腫物で打たれ，町の叫び聲は天にまで上った．
