- I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
- God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,
- Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
- But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
- Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

- すると， 神はご 自分の 民を 退けてしまわれたのですか． 絶對にそんなことはありません． この 私も イスラエル 人で， アブラハム の 子孫に 屬し， ベニヤミン 族の 出身です．
- 神は， あらかじめ 知っておられたご 自分の 民を 退けてしまわれたのではありません． それともあなたがたは， 聖書が エリヤ に 關する 個所で 言っていることを， 知らないのですか． 彼は イスラエル を 神に 訴えてこう 言いました．
- 「主よ． 彼らはあなたの 預言者たちを 殺し， あなたの 祭壇をこわし， 私だけが 殘されました． 彼らはいま 私のいのちを 取ろうとしています． 」
- ところが 彼に 對して 何とお 答えになりましたか． 「バアル にひざをかがめていない 男子七千人が， わたしのために 殘してある． 」
- それと 同じように， 今も， 惠みの 選びによって 殘された 者がいます．

- And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
- What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.
- (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
- And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
- Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

- もし 惠みによるのであれば， もはや 行ないによるのではありません． もしそうでなかったら， 惠みが 惠みでなくなります．
- では， どうなるのでしょう． イスラエル は 追い 求めていたものを 獲得できませんでした． 選ばれた 者は 獲得しましたが， 他の 者は， かたくなにされたのです．
- こう 書かれているとおりです． 「神は， 彼らに 鈍い 心と 見えない 目と 聞こえない 耳を 與えられた． 今日に 至るまで． 」
- ダビデ もこう 言います． 「彼らの 食卓は， 彼らにとってわなとなり， 網となり， つまずきとなり， 報いとなれ．
- その 目はくらんで 見えなくなり， その 背はいつまでもかがんでおれ． 」

- I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
- Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

- では， 尋ねましょう． 彼らがつまずいたのは 倒れるためなのでしょうか． 絶對にそんなことはありません． かえって， 彼らの 違反によって， 救いが 異邦人に 及んだのです． それは， イスラエル にねたみを 起こさせるためです．
- もし 彼らの 違反が 世界の 富となり， 彼らの 失敗が 異邦人の 富となるのなら， 彼らの 完成は， それ 以上の， どんなにかすばらしいものを， もたらすことでしょう．
