- This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
- That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
- Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
- And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
- For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:

- 愛する 人たち． いま 私がこの 第二の 手紙をあなたがたに 書き 送るのは， これらの 手紙により， 記憶を 呼びさまさせて， あなたがたの 純眞な 心を 奮い 立たせるためなのです．
- それは， 聖なる 預言者たちによって 前もって 語られたみことばと， あなたがたの 使徒たちが 語った， 主であり 救い 主である 方の 命令とを 思い 起こさせるためなのです．
- まず 第一に， 次のことを 知っておきなさい． 終わりの 日に， あざける 者どもがやって 來てあざけり， 自分たちの 欲望に 從って 生活し，
- 次のように 言うでしょう． 「キリスト の 來臨の 約束はどこにあるのか． 先祖たちが 眠った 時からこのかた， 何事も 創造の 初めからのままではないか． 」
- こう 言い 張る 彼らは， 次のことを 見落としています． すなわち， 天は 古い 昔からあり， 地は 神のことばによって 水から 出て， 水によって 成ったのであって，

- Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
- But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
- But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
- The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

- 當時の 世界は， その 水により， 洪水におおわれて 滅びました．
- しかし， 今の 天と 地は， 同じみことばによって， 火に 燒かれるためにとっておかれ， 不敬 ·な 者どものさばきと 滅びとの 日まで， 保たれているのです．
- しかし， 愛する 人たち． あなたがたは， この 一事を 見落としてはいけません． すなわち， 主の 御前では， 一日は 千年のようであり， 千年は 一日のようです．
- 主は， ある 人たちがおそいと 思っているように， その 約束のことを 遲らせておられるのではありません． かえって， あなたがたに 對して 忍耐深くあられるのであって， ひとりでも 滅びることを 望まず， すべての 人が 悔い 改めに 進むことを 望んでおられるのです．
- しかし， 主の 日は， 盜人のようにやって 來ます． その 日には， 天は 大きな 響きをたてて 消えうせ， 天の 万象は 燒けてくずれ 去り， 地と 地のいろいろなわざは 燒き 盡くされます．

- Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
- Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
- Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
- Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
- And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

- このように， これらのものはみな， くずれ 落ちるものだとすれば， あなたがたは， どれほど 聖い 生き 方をする 敬 ·な 人でなければならないことでしょう．
- そのようにして， 神の 日の 來るのを 待ち 望み， その 日の 來るのを 早めなければなりません． その 日が 來れば， そのために， 天は 燃えてくずれ， 天の 万象は 燒け 溶けてしまいます．
- しかし， 私たちは， 神の 約束に 從って， 正義の 住む 新しい 天と 新しい 地を 待ち 望んでいます．
- そういうわけで， 愛する 人たち． このようなことを 待ち 望んでいるあなたがたですから， しみも 傷もない 者として， 平安をもって 御前に 出られるように， 勵みなさい．
- また， 私たちの 主の 忍耐は 救いであると 考えなさい． それは， 私たちの 愛する 兄弟 パウロ も， その 與えられた 知惠に 從って， あなたがたに 書き 送ったとおりです．

- As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
- Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
- But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

- その 中で， ほかのすべての 手紙でもそうなのですが， このことについて 語っています． その 手紙の 中には 理解しにくいところもあります． 無知な， 心の 定まらない 人たちは， 聖書の 他の 個所のばあいもそうするのですが， それらの 手紙を 曲解し， 自分自身に 滅びを 招いています．
- 愛する 人たち． そういうわけですから， このことをあらかじめ 知っておいて， よく 氣をつけ， 無節操な 者たちの 迷いに 誘い ¿まれて 自分自身の 堅實さを 失うことにならないようにしなさい．
- 私たちの 主であり 救い 主である イエス · キリスト の 惠みと 知識において 成長しなさい． この キリスト に， 榮光が， 今も 永遠の 日に 至るまでもありますように． ア ― メン ．
