- And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
- Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
- And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
- Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
- The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

- イエス は 十二弟子にこのように 命じ 終えてから， 町¿で 敎えまた 宣べ 傳えるために， そこを 立ち 去られた．
- さて， ヨハネ は 獄中で キリスト のみわざについて 傳え 聞き， 自分の 弟子たちをつかわして，
- イエス に 言わせた， 「『きたるべきかた 』はあなたなのですか． それとも， ほかにだれかを 待つべきでしょうか 」．
- イエス は 答えて 言われた， 「行って， あなたがたが 見聞きしていることを ヨハネ に 報告しなさい．
- 盲人は 見え， 足なえは 步き， らい 病人はきよまり， 耳しいは 聞え， 死人は 生きかえり， 貧しい 人¿は 福音を 聞かされている．

- And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
- And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
- But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
- But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
- For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

- わたしにつまずかない 者は， さいわいである 」．
- 彼らが 歸ってしまうと， イエス は ヨハネ のことを 群衆に 語りはじめられた， 「あなたがたは， 何を 見に 荒野に 出てきたのか． 風に ¿らぐ 葦であるか．
- では， 何を 見に 出てきたのか． 柔らかい 着物をまとった 人か． 柔らかい 着物をまとった 人¿なら， 王の 家にいる．
- では， なんのために 出てきたのか． 預言者を 見るためか． そうだ， あなたがたに 言うが， 預言者以上の 者である．
- 『見よ， わたしは 使をあなたの 先につかわし， あなたの 前に， 道を 整えさせるであろう 』と 書いてあるのは， この 人のことである．

- Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
- And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
- For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
- And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
- He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

- あなたがたによく 言っておく． 女の 産んだ 者の 中で， バプテスマ の ヨハネ より 大きい 人物は 起らなかった． しかし， 天國で 最も 小さい 者も， 彼よりは 大きい．
- バプテスマ の ヨハネ の 時から 今に 至るまで， 天國は 激しく 襲われている． そして 激しく 襲う 者たちがそれを 奪い 取っている．
- すべての 預言者と 律法とが 預言したのは， ヨハネ の 時までである．
- そして， もしあなたがたが 受けいれることを 望めば， この 人こそは， きたるべき エリヤ なのである．
- 耳のある 者は 聞くがよい．

- But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
- And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
- For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
- The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
- Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:

- 今の 時代を 何に 比べようか． それは 子供たちが 廣場にすわって， ほかの 子供たちに 呼びかけ，
- 『わたしたちが 笛を 吹いたのに， あなたたちは 踊ってくれなかった． 弔いの 歌を 歌ったのに， 胸を 打ってくれなかった 』と 言うのに 似ている．
- なぜなら， ヨハネ がきて， 食べることも， 飮むこともしないと， あれは 惡靈につかれているのだ， と 言い，
- また 人の 子がきて， 食べたり 飮んだりしていると， 見よ， あれは 食をむさぼる 者， 大酒を 飮む 者， また 取稅人， 罪人の 仲間だ， と 言う． しかし， 知惠の 正しいことは， その ¿きが 證明する 」．
- それから イエス は， 數¿の 力あるわざがなされたのに， 悔い 改めることをしなかった 町¿を， 責めはじめられた．

- Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
- But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
- And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
- But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.

- 「わざわいだ， コラジン よ． わざわいだ， ベツサイダ よ． おまえたちのうちでなされた 力あるわざが， もし ツロ と シドン でなされたなら， 彼らはとうの 昔に， 荒布をまとい 灰をかぶって， 悔い 改めたであろう．
- しかし， おまえたちに 言っておく． さばきの 日には， ツロ と シドン の 方がおまえたちよりも， 耐えやすいであろう．
- ああ， カペナウム よ， おまえは 天にまで 上げられようとでもいうのか． 黃泉にまで 落されるであろう． おまえの 中でなされた 力あるわざが， もし ソドム でなされたなら， その 町は 今日までも 殘っていたであろう．
- しかし， あなたがたに 言う． さばきの 日には， ソドム の 地の 方がおまえよりは 耐えやすいであろう 」．
