- Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
- And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
- And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
- Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
- And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

- 大祭司は「そのとおりか 」と 尋ねた．
- そこで， ステパノ が 言った， ／「兄弟たち， 父たちよ， お 聞き 下さい． わたしたちの 父祖 アブラハム が， カラン に 住む 前， まだ メソポタミヤ にいたとき， 榮光の 神が 彼に 現れて
- 仰せになった， 『あなたの 土地と 親族から 離れて， あなたにさし 示す 地に 行きなさい 』．
- そこで， アブラハム は カルデヤ 人の 地を 出て， カラン に 住んだ． そして， 彼の 父が 死んだのち， 神は 彼をそこから， 今あなたがたの 住んでいるこの 地に 移住させたが，
- そこでは， 遺産となるものは 何一つ， 一步の 幅の 土地すらも， 與えられなかった． ただ， その 地を 所領として 授けようとの 約束を， 彼と， そして 彼にはまだ 子がなかったのに， その 子孫とに 與えられたのである．

- And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
- And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
- And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
- And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
- And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

- 神はこう 仰せになった， 『彼の 子孫は 他國に 身を 寄せるであろう． そして， そこで 四百年のあいだ， 奴隷にされて 虐待を 受けるであろう 』．
- それから， さらに 仰せになった， 『彼らを 奴隷にする 國民を， わたしはさばくであろう． その 後， 彼らはそこからのがれ 出て， この 場所でわたしを 禮拜するであろう 』．
- そして， 神は アブラハム に， 割禮の 契約をお 與えになった． こうして， 彼は イサク の 父となり， これに 八日目に 割禮を 施し， それから， イサク は ヤコブ の 父となり， ヤコブ は 十二人の 族長たちの 父となった．
- 族長たちは， ヨセフ をねたんで， エジプト に 賣りとばした． しかし， 神は 彼と 共にいまして，
- あらゆる 苦難から 彼を 救い 出し， エジプト 王 パロ の 前で 惠みを 與え， 知惠をあらわさせた． そこで， パロ は 彼を 宰相の 任につかせ， エジプト ならびに 王家全體の 支配に 當らせた．

- Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
- But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
- And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
- Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
- So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

- 時に， エジプト と カナン との 全土にわたって， ききんが 起り， 大きな 苦難が 襲ってきて， わたしたちの 先祖たちは， 食物が 得られなくなった．
- ヤコブ は， エジプト には 食糧があると 聞いて， 初めに 先祖たちをつかわしたが，
- 二回目の 時に， ヨセフ が 兄弟たちに， 自分の 身の 上を 打ち 明けたので， 彼の 親族關係が パロ に 知れてきた．
- ヨセフ は 使をやって， 父 ヤコブ と 七十五人にのぼる 親族一同とを 招いた．
- こうして， ヤコブ は エジプト に 下り， 彼自身も 先祖たちもそこで 死に，

- And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
- But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
- Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
- The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
- In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

- それから 彼らは， シケム に 移されて， かねて アブラハム がいくらかの 金を 出してこの 地の ハモル の 子らから 買っておいた 墓に， 葬られた．
- 神が アブラハム に 對して 立てられた 約束の 時期が 近づくにつれ， 民はふえて エジプト 全土にひろがった．
- やがて， ヨセフ のことを 知らない 別な 王が， エジプト に 起った．
- この 王は， わたしたちの 同族に 對し 策略をめぐらして， 先祖たちを 虐待し， その 幼な 子らを 生かしておかないように 捨てさせた．
- モ ― セ が 生れたのは， ちょうどこのころのことである． 彼はまれに 見る 美しい 子であった． 三か 月の 間は， 父の 家で 育てられたが，

- And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
- And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
- And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
- And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
- For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

- そののち 捨てられたのを， パロ の 娘が 拾いあげて， 自分の 子として 育てた．
- モ ― セ は エジプト 人のあらゆる 學問を 敎え ¿まれ， 言葉にもわざにも， 力があった．
- 四十歲になった 時， モ ― セ は 自分の 兄弟である イスラエル 人たちのために 盡すことを， 思い 立った．
- ところが， そのひとりがいじめられているのを 見て， これをかばい， 虐待されているその 人のために， 相手の エジプト 人を 擊って 仕返しをした．
- 彼は， 自分の 手によって 神が 兄弟たちを 救って 下さることを， みんなが 悟るものと 思っていたが， 實際はそれを 悟らなかったのである．

- And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
- But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
- Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
- Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
- And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

- 翌日 モ ― セ は， 彼らが 爭い 合っているところに 現れ， 仲裁しようとして 言った， 『まて， 君たちは 兄弟同志ではないか． どうして 互に 傷つけ 合っているのか 』．
- すると， 仲間をいじめていた 者が， モ ― セ を 突き 飛ばして 言った， 『だれが， 君をわれわれの 支配者や 裁判人にしたのか．
- 君は， きのう， エジプト 人を 殺したように， わたしも 殺そうと 思っているのか 』．
- モ ― セ は， この 言葉を 聞いて 逃げ， ミデアン の 地に 身を 寄せ， そこで 男の 子ふたりをもうけた．
- 四十年たった 時， シナイ 山の 荒野において， 御使が 柴の 燃える 炎の 中で モ ― セ に 現れた．

- When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,
- Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
- Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
- I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
- This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

- 彼はこの 光景を 見て 不思議に 思い， それを 見きわめるために 近寄ったところ， 主の 聲が 聞えてきた，
- 『わたしは， あなたの 先祖たちの 神， アブラハム ， イサク ， ヤコブ の 神である 』． モ ― セ は 恐れおののいて， もうそれを 見る 勇氣もなくなった．
- すると， 主が 彼に 言われた， 『あなたの 足から， くつを 脫ぎなさい． あなたの 立っているこの 場所は， 聖なる 地である．
- わたしは， エジプト にいるわたしの 民が 虐待されている 有樣を 確かに 見とどけ， その 苦惱のうめき 聲を 聞いたので， 彼らを 救い 出すために 下ってきたのである． さあ， 今あなたを エジプト につかわそう 』．
- こうして， 『だれが， 君を 支配者や 裁判人にしたのか 』と 言って 排斥されたこの モ ― セ を， 神は， 柴の 中で 彼に 現れた 御使の 手によって， 支配者， 解放者として， おつかわしになったのである．

- He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
|
- この 人が， 人¿を 導き 出して， エジプト の 地においても， 紅海においても， また 四十年のあいだ 荒野においても， 奇跡としるしとを 行ったのである．
