- I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
- God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,
- Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
- But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
- Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

- そこで， わたしは 問う， 「神はその 民を 捨てたのであろうか 」． 斷じてそうではない． わたしも イスラエル 人であり， アブラハム の 子孫， ベニヤミン 族の 者である．
- 神は， あらかじめ 知っておられたその 民を， 捨てることはされなかった． 聖書が エリヤ についてなんと 言っているか， あなたがたは 知らないのか． すなわち， 彼は イスラエル を 神に 訴えてこう 言った．
- 「主よ， 彼らはあなたの 預言者たちを 殺し， あなたの 祭壇をこぼち， そして， わたしひとりが 取り 殘されたのに， 彼らはわたしのいのちをも 求めています 」．
- しかし， 彼に 對する 御告げはなんであったか， 「バアル にひざをかがめなかった 七千人を， わたしのために 殘しておいた 」．
- それと 同じように， 今の 時にも， 惠みの 選びによって 殘された 者がいる．

- And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
- What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.
- (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
- And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
- Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

- しかし， 惠みによるのであれば， もはや 行いによるのではない． そうでないと， 惠みはもはや 惠みでなくなるからである．
- では， どうなるのか． イスラエル はその 追い 求めているものを 得ないで， ただ 選ばれた 者が， それを 得た． そして， 他の 者たちはかたくなになった．
- 「神は， 彼らに 鈍い 心と， ／見えない 目と， 聞えない 耳とを 與えて， ／きょう， この 日に 及んでいる 」／と 書いてあるとおりである．
- ダビデ もまた 言っている， ／「彼らの 食卓は， 彼らのわなとなれ， 網となれ， ／つまずきとなれ， 報復となれ．
- 彼らの 目は， くらんで 見えなくなれ， ／彼らの 背は， いつまでも 曲っておれ 」．

- I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
- Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

- そこで， わたしは 問う， 「彼らがつまずいたのは， 倒れるためであったのか 」． 斷じてそうではない． かえって， 彼らの 罪過によって， 救が 異邦人に 及び， それによって イスラエル を 奮起させるためである．
- しかし， もし， 彼らの 罪過が 世の 富となり， 彼らの 失敗が 異邦人の 富となったとすれば， まして 彼らが 全部救われたなら， どんなにかすばらしいことであろう．
