- Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
- Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
- But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
- Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
- And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

- ユダ と ベニヤミン の 敵である 者たちは 捕囚から 歸ってきた 人¿が， イスラエル の 神， 主のために 神殿を 建てていることを 聞き，
- ゼルバベル と 氏族の 長たちのもとに 來て 言った， 「われわれも， あなたがたと 一緖にこれを 建てさせてください． われわれはあなたがたと 同じく， あなたがたの 神を 禮拜します． アッスリヤ の 王 エサル · ハドン がわれわれをここにつれて 來た 日からこのかた， われわれは 彼に ¿牲をささげてきました 」．
- しかし ゼルバベル ， エシュア およびその 他の イスラエル の 氏族の 長たちは， 彼らに 言った， 「あなたがたは， われわれの 神に 宮を 建てることにあずかってはなりません． ペルシャ の 王 クロス 王がわれわれに 命じたように， われわれだけで， イスラエル の 神， 主のために 建てるのです 」．
- そこでその 地の 民は ユダ の 民の 手を 弱らせて， その 建築を 妨げ，
- その 企てを 破るために 役人を 買收して 彼らに 敵せしめ， ペルシャ 王 クロス の 代から ペルシャ 王 ダリヨス の 治世にまで 及んだ．

- And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
- And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
- Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
- Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
- And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

- アハスエロス の 治世， すなわちその 治世の 初めに， 彼らは ユダ と エルサレム の 住民を 訴える 告訴狀を 書いた．
- また アルタシャスタ の 世に ビシラム ， ミテレダテ ， タビエル およびその 他の 同僚も， ペルシャ 王 アルタシャスタ に 手紙を 書いた． その 手紙の 文は アラム 語で 書かれて 譯されていた．
- 長官 レホム と 書記官 シムシャイ は アルタシャスタ 王に エルサレム を 訴えて 次のような 手紙をしたためた．
- すなわち 長官 レホム と 書記官 シムシャイ およびその 他の 同僚， すなわち 裁判官， 知事， 役人， ペルシャ 人， エレク の 人¿， バビロン 人， スサ の 人¿すなわち エラム びと，
- およびその 他の 民すなわち 大いなる 尊い オスナパル が， 移して サマリヤ の 町¿および 川向こうのその 他の 地に 住ませた 者どもが，

- This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
- Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
- Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
- Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
- That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

- 送った 手紙の 寫しはこれである． ――「アルタシャスタ 王へ， 川向こうのあなたのしもべども， あいさつを 申し 上げます．
- 王よ， ご 承知ください． あなたのもとから， わたしたちの 所に 上って 來た ユダヤ 人らは エルサレム に 來て， かのそむいた 惡い 町を 建て 直し， その 城壁を 築きあげ， その 基礎をつくろっています．
- 王よ， いまご 承知ください． もしこの 町を 建て， 城壁を 築きあげるならば， 彼らはみつぎ， 關稅， 稅金を 納めなくなります． そうすれば 王の 收入が 減るでしょう．
- われわれは 王宮の 鹽をはむ 者ですから， 王の 不名譽を 見るに 忍びないので， 人をつかわして 王にお 聞かせするのです．
- 歷代の 記錄をお 調べください． その 記錄の 書において， この 町はそむいた 町で， 諸王と 諸州に 害を 及ぼしたものであることを 見， その 中に 古來， むほんの 行われたことを 知られるでしょう． この 町が 滅ぼされたのはこれがためなのです．

- We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
- Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
- The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
- And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
- There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

- われわれは 王にお 知らせいたします． もしこの 町が 建てられ， 城壁が 築きあげられたなら， 王は 川向こうの 領地を 失うに 至るでしょう 」．
- 王は 返書を 送って 言った， 「長官 レホム ， 書記官 シムシャイ ， その 他 サマリヤ および 川向こうのほかの 所に 住んでいる 同僚に， あいさつをする． いま，
- あなたがたがわれわれに 送った 手紙を， わたしの 前に 明らかに 讀ませた．
- わたしは 命令を 下して 調査させたところ， この 町は 古來， 諸王にそむいた 事， その 中に 反亂， むほんのあったことを 見いだした．
- また エルサレム には 大いなる 王たちがあって， 川向こうの 地をことごとく 治め， みつぎ， 關稅， 稅金を 納めさせたこともあった．

- Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
- Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
- Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
- Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

- それであなたがたは 命令を 傳えて， その 人¿をとどめ， わたしの 命令の 下るまで， この 町を 建てさせてはならない．
- あなたがたは 愼んでこのことについて 怠ることのないようにしなさい． どうして 損害を 增して， 王に 害を 及ぼしてよかろうか 」．
- アルタシャスタ 王の 手紙の 寫しが レホム および 書記官 シムシャイ とその 同僚の 前に 讀み 上げられたので， 彼らは 急いで エルサレム の ユダヤ 人のもとにおもむき， 腕力と 權力とをもって 彼らをやめさせた．
- それで エルサレム にある 神の 宮の 工事は 中止された． すなわち ペルシャ 王 ダリヨス の 治世の 二年まで 中止された．
