- And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
- Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them.
- And Moses by the commandment of the LORD sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.
- And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur.
- Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori.

- 主は モ ― セ に 言われた．
- 「人を 遣わして， わたしが イスラエル の 人¿に 與えようとしている カナン の 土地を 偵察させなさい． 父祖以來の 部族ごとに 一人ずつ， それぞれ， 指導者を 遣わさねばならない． 」
- モ ― セ は 主の 命令に 從い， パラン の 荒れ 野から 彼らを 遣わした． 彼らは 皆， イスラエル の 人¿の 長である 人¿であった．
- その 名は 次のとおりである． ルベン 族では， ザクル の 子 シャムア ，
- シメオン 族では， ホリ の 子 シャファト ，

- Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
- Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.
- Of the tribe of Ephraim, Oshea the son of Nun.
- Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu.
- Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi.

- Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi.
- Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.
- Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael.
- Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi.
- Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

- ヨセフ 族すなわち マナセ 族では， スシ の 子 ガディ ，
- ダン 族では， ゲマリ の 子 アミエル ，
- アシェル 族では， ミカエル の 子 セトル ，
- ナフタリ 族では， ボフシ の 子 ナフビ ，
- ガド 族では， マキ の 子 ゲウエル ．

- These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
- And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
- And see the land, what it is, and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;
- And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
- And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whether there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land. Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes.

- 以上は， モ ― セ がその 土地の 偵察に 遣わした 人¿の 名である． モ ― セ は， ヌン の 子 ホシェア を ヨシュア と 呼んだ．
- モ ― セ は， 彼らを カナン の 土地の 偵察に 遣わすにあたってこう 命じた． 「ネゲブ に 上り， 更に 山を 登って 行き，
- その 土地がどんな 所か 調べて 來なさい． そこの 住民が 强いか 弱いか， 人數が 多いか 少ないか，
- 彼らの 住む 土地が 良いか 惡いか， 彼らの 住む 町がどんな 樣子か， 天幕を 張っているのか 城壁があるのか，
- 土地はどうか， 肥えているかやせているか， 木が 茂っているか 否かを． あなたたちは 雄¿しく 行き， その 土地の 果物を 取って 來なさい． 」それはちょうど， ぶどうの 熟す 時期であった．

- So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath.
- And they ascended by the south, and came unto Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)
- And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two upon a staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs.
- The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence.
- And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

- 彼らは ネゲブ を 上って 行き， ヘブロン に 着いた． そこには， アナク 人の 子孫である アヒマン と シェシャイ と タルマイ が 住んでいた． ヘブロン は エジプト の ツォアン よりも 七年前に 建てられた 町である．
- エシュコル の 谷に 着くと， 彼らは 一房のぶどうの 付いた 枝を 切り 取り， 棒に 下げ， 二人で 擔いだ． また， ざくろやいちじくも 取った．
- この 場所が エシュコル の 谷と 呼ばれるのは， イスラエル の 人¿がここで 一房（エシュコル ）のぶどうを 切り 取ったからである．
- 四十日の 後， 彼らは 土地の 偵察から 歸って 來た．

- And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land.
- And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
- Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
- The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
- And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

- パラン の 荒れ 野の カデシュ にいる モ ― セ ， アロン および イスラエル の 人¿の 共同體全體のもとに 來ると， 彼らと 共同體全體に 報告をし， その 土地の 果物を 見せた．
- 彼らは モ ― セ に 說明して 言った． 「わたしたちは， あなたが 遣わされた 地方に 行って 來ました． そこは 乳と 蜜の 流れる 所でした． これがそこの 果物です．
- しかし， その 土地の 住民は 强く， 町という 町は 城壁に 圍まれ， 大層大きく， しかも アナク 人の 子孫さえ 見かけました．
- ネゲブ 地方には アマレク 人， 山地には ヘト 人， エブス 人， アモリ 人， 海岸地方および ヨルダン 沿岸地方には カナン 人が 住んでいます． 」
- カレブ は 民を 靜め， モ ― セ に 向かって 進言した． 「斷然上って 行くべきです． そこを 占領しましょう． 必ず 勝てます． 」

- But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
- And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
- And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.

- しかし， 彼と 一緖に 行った 者たちは 反對し， 「いや， あの 民に 向かって 上って 行くのは 不可能だ． 彼らは 我¿よりも 强い 」と 言い，
- イスラエル の 人¿の 間に， 偵察して 來た 土地について 惡い 情報を 流した． 「我¿が 偵察して 來た 土地は， そこに 住み 着こうとする 者を 食い 盡くすような 土地だ． 我¿が 見た 民は 皆， 巨人だった．
- そこで 我¿が 見たのは， ネフィリム なのだ． アナク 人は ネフィリム の 出なのだ． 我¿は， 自分がいなごのように 小さく 見えたし， 彼らの 目にもそう 見えたにちがいない． 」
