- Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
- Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
- And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
- As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
- Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

- 皇帝 ティベリウス の 治世の 第十五年， ポンティオ · ピラト が ユダヤ の 總督， ヘロデ が ガリラヤ の 領主， その 兄弟 フィリポ が イトラヤ と トラコン 地方の 領主， リサニア が アビレネ の 領主，
- アンナス と カイアファ とが 大祭司であったとき， 神の 言葉が 荒れ 野で ザカリア の 子 ヨハネ に 降った．
- そこで， ヨハネ は ヨルダン 川沿いの 地方一帶に 行って， 罪の 赦しを 得させるために 悔い 改めの 洗禮を 宣べ 傳えた．
- これは， 預言者 イザヤ の 書に 書いてあるとおりである． 「荒れ 野で 叫ぶ 者の 聲がする． 『主の 道を 整え， ／その 道筋をまっすぐにせよ．
- 谷はすべて 埋められ， ／山と 丘はみな 低くされる． 曲がった 道はまっすぐに， ／でこぼこの 道は 平らになり，

- And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
- Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
- Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
- And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
- And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

- 人は 皆， 神の 救いを 仰ぎ 見る． 』」
- そこで ヨハネ は， 洗禮を 授けてもらおうとして 出て 來た 群衆に 言った． 「·の 子らよ， 差し 迫った 神の 怒りを 免れると， だれが 敎えたのか．
- 悔い 改めにふさわしい 實を 結べ． 『我¿の 父は アブラハム だ 』などという 考えを 起こすな． 言っておくが， 神はこんな 石ころからでも， アブラハム の 子たちを 造り 出すことがおできになる．
- 斧は 旣に 木の 根元に 置かれている． 良い 實を 結ばない 木はみな， 切り 倒されて 火に 投げ ¿まれる． 」
- そこで 群衆は， 「では， わたしたちはどうすればよいのですか 」と 尋ねた．

- He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
- Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
- And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
- And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
- And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;

- ヨハネ は， 「下着を 二枚持っている 者は， 一枚も 持たない 者に 分けてやれ． 食べ 物を 持っている 者も 同じようにせよ 」と 答えた．
- 徵稅人も 洗禮を 受けるために 來て， 「先生， わたしたちはどうすればよいのですか 」と 言った．
- ヨハネ は， 「規定以上のものは 取り 立てるな 」と 言った．
- 兵士も， 「このわたしたちはどうすればよいのですか 」と 尋ねた． ヨハネ は， 「だれからも 金をゆすり 取ったり， だまし 取ったりするな． 自分の 給料で 滿足せよ 」と 言った．
- 民衆は メシア を 待ち 望んでいて， ヨハネ について， もしかしたら 彼が メシア ではないかと， 皆心の 中で 考えていた．

- John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
- Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
- And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
- But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
- Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

- そこで， ヨハネ は 皆に 向かって 言った． 「わたしはあなたたちに 水で 洗禮を 授けるが， わたしよりも 優れた 方が 來られる． わたしは， その 方の 履物のひもを 解く 値打ちもない． その 方は， 聖靈と 火であなたたちに 洗禮をお 授けになる．
- そして， 手に 箕を 持って， 脫穀場を 隅¿まできれいにし， 麥を 集めて 倉に 入れ， 殼を 消えることのない 火で 燒き 拂われる． 」
- ヨハネ は， ほかにもさまざまな 勸めをして， 民衆に 福音を 告げ 知らせた．
- ところで， 領主 ヘロデ は， 自分の 兄弟の 妻 ヘロディア とのことについて， また， 自分の 行ったあらゆる 惡事について， ヨハネ に 責められたので，
- ヨハネ を 牢に 閉じ ¿めた． こうして ヘロデ は， それまでの 惡事にもう 一つの 惡事を 加えた．

- Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
- And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

- 民衆が 皆洗禮を 受け， イエス も 洗禮を 受けて 祈っておられると， 天が 開け，
- 聖靈が 鳩のように 目に 見える 姿で イエス の 上に 降って 來た． すると， 「あなたはわたしの 愛する 子， わたしの 心に 適う 者 」という 聲が， 天から 聞こえた．
