- Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
- Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
- And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
- But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.
- Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.

- フェストゥス は， 總督として 着任して 三日たってから， カイサリア から エルサレム へ 上った．
- -3 祭司長たちや ユダヤ 人のおもだった 人¿は， パウロ を 訴え 出て， 彼を エルサレム へ 送り 返すよう 計らっていただきたいと， フェストゥス に 賴んだ． 途中で 殺そうと 陰謀をたくらんでいたのである．

- ところが フェストゥス は， パウロ は カイサリア で 監禁されており， 自分も 間もなくそこへ 歸るつもりであると 答え，
- 「だから， その 男に 不都合なところがあるというのなら， あなたたちのうちの 有力者が， わたしと 一緖に 下って 行って， 告發すればよいではないか 」と 言った．

- And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.
- And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.
- While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.
- But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
- Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.

- フェストゥス は， 八日か 十日ほど 彼らの 間で 過ごしてから， カイサリア へ 下り， 翌日， 裁判の 席に 着いて， パウロ を 引き 出すように 命令した．
- パウロ が 出廷すると， エルサレム から 下って 來た ユダヤ 人たちが 彼を 取り 圍んで， 重い 罪狀をあれこれ 言い 立てたが， それを 立證することはできなかった．
- パウロ は， 「私は， ユダヤ 人の 律法に 對しても， 神殿に 對しても， 皇帝に 對しても 何も 罪を 犯したことはありません 」と 弁明した．
- しかし， フェストゥス は ユダヤ 人に 氣に 入られようとして， パウロ に 言った． 「お 前は， エルサレム に 上って， そこでこれらのことについて， わたしの 前で 裁判を 受けたいと 思うか． 」
- パウロ は 言った． 「私は， 皇帝の 法廷に 出頭しているのですから， ここで 裁判を 受けるのが 當然です． よくご 存じのとおり， 私は ユダヤ 人に 對して 何も 惡いことをしていません．

- For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.
- Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.
- And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus.
- And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:
- About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.

- もし， 惡いことをし， 何か 死罪に 當たることをしたのであれば， 決して 死を 免れようとは 思いません． しかし， この 人たちの 訴えが 事實無根なら， だれも 私を 彼らに 引き 渡すような 取り 計らいはできません． 私は 皇帝に 上訴します． 」
- そこで， フェストゥス は 陪審の 人¿と 協議してから， 「皇帝に 上訴したのだから， 皇帝のもとに 出頭するように 」と 答えた．
- 數日たって， アグリッパ 王と ベルニケ が， フェストゥス に 敬意を 表するために カイサリア に 來た．
- 彼らが 幾日もそこに 滯在していたので， フェストゥス は パウロ の 件を 王に 持ち 出して 言った． 「ここに， フェリクス が 囚人として 殘していった 男がいます．
- わたしが エルサレム に 行ったときに， 祭司長たちや ユダヤ 人の 長老たちがこの 男を 訴え 出て， 有罪の 判決を 下すように 要求したのです．

- To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
- Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
- Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:
- But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
- And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.

- わたしは 彼らに 答えました． 『被告が 告發されたことについて， 原告の 面前で 弁明する 機會も 與えられず， 引き 渡されるのは ロ ― マ 人の 慣習ではない 』と．
- それで， 彼らが 連れ 立って 當地へ 來ましたから， わたしはすぐにその 翌日， 裁判の 席に 着き， その 男を 出廷させるように 命令しました．
- 告發者たちは 立ち 上がりましたが， 彼について， わたしが 予想していたような 罪狀は 何一つ 指摘できませんでした．
- パウロ と 言い 爭っている 問題は， 彼ら 自身の 宗敎に 關することと， 死んでしまった イエス とかいう 者のことです． この イエス が 生きていると， パウロ は 主張しているのです．
- わたしは， これらのことの 調査の 方法が 分からなかったので， 『エルサレム へ 行き， そこでこれらの 件に 關して 裁判を 受けたくはないか 』と 言いました．

- But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
- Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
- And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.
- And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
- But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.

- しかし パウロ は， 皇帝陛下の 判決を 受けるときまで， ここにとどめておいてほしいと 願い 出ましたので， 皇帝のもとに 護送するまで， 彼をとどめておくように 命令しました． 」
- そこで， アグリッパ が フェストゥス に， 「わたしも， その 男の 言うことを 聞いてみたいと 思います 」と 言うと， フェストゥス は， 「明日， お 聞きになれます 」と 言った．
- 翌日， アグリッパ と ベルニケ が 盛裝して 到着し， 千人隊長たちや 町のおもだった 人¿と 共に 謁見室に 入ると， フェストゥス の 命令で パウロ が 引き 出された．
- そこで， フェストゥス は 言った． 「アグリッパ 王， ならびに 列席の 諸君， この 男を 御覽なさい． ユダヤ 人がこぞってもう 生かしておくべきではないと 叫び， エルサレム でもこの 地でもわたしに 訴え 出ているのは， この 男のことです．
- しかし， 彼が 死罪に 相當するようなことは 何もしていないということが， わたしには 分かりました． ところが， この 者自身が 皇帝陛下に 上訴したので， 護送することに 決定しました．

- Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.
- For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.

- しかし， この 者について 確實なことは， 何も 陛下に 書き 送ることができません． そこで， 諸君の 前に， 特に アグリッパ 王， 貴下の 前に 彼を 引き 出しました． よく 取り 調べてから， 何か 書き 送るようにしたいのです．
- 囚人を 護送するのに， その 罪狀を 示さないのは 理に 合わないと， わたしには 思われるからです． 」
