- I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
- God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel saying,
- Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.
- But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.
- Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

- では， 尋ねよう． 神は 御自分の 民を 退けられたのであろうか． 決してそうではない． わたしも イスラエル 人で， アブラハム の 子孫であり， ベニヤミン 族の 者です．
- 神は， 前もって 知っておられた 御自分の 民を 退けたりなさいませんでした． それとも， エリヤ について 聖書に 何と 書いてあるか， あなたがたは 知らないのですか． 彼は， イスラエル を 神にこう 訴えています．
- 「主よ， 彼らはあなたの 預言者たちを 殺し， あなたの 祭壇を 壞しました． そして， わたしだけが 殘りましたが， 彼らはわたしの 命をねらっています． 」
- しかし， 神は 彼に 何と 告げているか． 「わたしは， バアル にひざまずかなかった 七千人を 自分のために 殘しておいた 」と 告げておられます．
- 同じように， 現に 今も， 惠みによって 選ばれた 者が 殘っています．

- And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
- What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.
- (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
- And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
- Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

- もしそれが 惠みによるとすれば， 行いにはよりません． もしそうでなければ， 惠みはもはや 惠みではなくなります．
- では， どうなのか． イスラエル は 求めているものを 得ないで， 選ばれた 者がそれを 得たのです． 他の 者はかたくなにされたのです．
- 「神は， 彼らに 鈍い 心， 見えない 目， ／聞こえない 耳を 與えられた， 今日に 至るまで 」と 書いてあるとおりです．
- ダビデ もまた 言っています． 「彼らの 食卓は， ／自分たちの ┼となり， 網となるように． つまずきとなり， 罰となるように．
- 彼らの 目はくらんで 見えなくなるように． 彼らの 背をいつも 曲げておいてください． 」

- I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.
- Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness?

- では， 尋ねよう． ユダヤ 人がつまずいたとは， 倒れてしまったということなのか． 決してそうではない． かえって， 彼らの 罪によって 異邦人に 救いがもたらされる 結果になりましたが， それは， 彼らにねたみを 起こさせるためだったのです．
- 彼らの 罪が 世の 富となり， 彼らの 失敗が 異邦人の 富となるのであれば， まして 彼らが 皆救いにあずかるとすれば， どんなにかすばらしいことでしょう．
