- そこで， 會衆はみな 聲をあげて 叫び， 民はその 夜， 泣き 明かした．
- また イスラエル の 人¿はみな モ ― セ と アロン にむかってつぶやき， 全會衆は 彼らに 言った， 「ああ， わたしたちは エジプト の 國で 死んでいたらよかったのに． この 荒野で 死んでいたらよかったのに．
- なにゆえ， 主はわたしたちをこの 地に 連れてきて， つるぎに 倒れさせ， またわたしたちの 妻子をえじきとされるのであろうか． エジプト に 歸る 方が， むしろ 良いではないか 」．
- 彼らは 互に 言った， 「わたしたちはひとりのかしらを 立てて， エジプト に 歸ろう 」．
- そこで， モ ― セ と アロン は イスラエル の 人¿の 全會衆の 前でひれふした．

- And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
- And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
- And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
- And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
- Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

- このとき， その 地を 探った 者のうちの ヌン の 子 ヨシュア と エフンネ の 子 カレブ は， その 衣服を 裂き，
- イスラエル の 人¿の 全會衆に 言った， 「わたしたちが 行き 巡って 探った 地は 非常に 良い 地です．
- もし， 主が 良しとされるならば， わたしたちをその 地に 導いて 行って， それをわたしたちにくださるでしょう． それは 乳と 蜜の 流れている 地です．
- ただ， 主にそむいてはなりません． またその 地の 民を 恐れてはなりません． 彼らはわたしたちの 食い 物にすぎません． 彼らを 守る 者は 取り 除かれます． 主がわたしたちと 共におられますから， 彼らを 恐れてはなりません 」．
- ところが 會衆はみな 石で 彼らを 擊ち 殺そうとした． そのとき， 主の 榮光が， 會見の 幕屋から イスラエル のすべての 人に 現れた．

- And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
- And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
- If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
- Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
- But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

- 主は モ ― セ に 言われた， 「この 民はいつまでわたしを 侮るのか． わたしがもろもろのしるしを 彼らのうちに 行ったのに， 彼らはいつまでわたしを 信じないのか．
- わたしは 疫病をもって 彼らを 擊ち 滅ぼし， あなたを 彼らよりも 大いなる 强い 國民としよう 」．
- モ ― セ は 主に 言った， 「エジプト びとは， あなたが 力をもって， この 民を 彼らのうちから 導き 出されたことを 聞いて，
- この 地の 住民に 告げるでしょう． 彼らは， 主なるあなたが， この 民のうちにおられ， 主なるあなたが， まのあたり 現れ， あなたの 雲が， 彼らの 上にとどまり， ¿は 雲の 柱のうちに， 夜は 火の 柱のうちにあって， 彼らの 前に 行かれるのを 聞いたのです．
- いま， もし， あなたがこの 民をひとり 殘らず 殺されるならば， あなたのことを 聞いた 國民は 語って，

- And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
- I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
- And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
- And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
- Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

- 『主は 與えると 誓った 地に， この 民を 導き 入れることができなかったため， 彼らを 荒野で 殺したのだ 』と 言うでしょう．
- どうぞ， あなたが 約束されたように， いま 主の 大いなる 力を 現してください．
- あなたはかつて， 『主は 怒ることおそく， いつくしみに 富み， 罪ととがをゆるす 者， しかし， 罰すべき 者は， 決してゆるさず， 父の 罪を 子に 報いて， 三， 四代に 及ぼす 者である 』と 言われました．
- どうぞ， あなたの 大いなるいつくしみによって， エジプト からこのかた， 今にいたるまで， この 民をゆるされたように， この 民の 罪をおゆるしください 」．
- 主は 言われた， 「わたしはあなたの 言葉のとおりにゆるそう．

- Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
- And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my LORD be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
- The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
- Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
- And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

- しかし， わたしは 生きている． また 主の 榮光が， 全世界に 滿ちている．
- わたしの 榮光と， わたしが エジプト と 荒野で 行ったしるしを 見ながら， このように 十度もわたしを 試みて， わたしの 聲に 聞きしたがわなかった 人¿はひとりも，
- わたしがかつて 彼らの 先祖たちに 與えると 誓った 地を 見ないであろう． またわたしを 侮った 人¿も， それを 見ないであろう．
- ただし， わたしのしもべ カレブ は 違った 心をもっていて， わたしに 完全に 從ったので， わたしは 彼が 行ってきた 地に 彼を 導き 入れるであろう． 彼の 子孫はそれを 所有するにいたるであろう．

- But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
- Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
- Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
- But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
- (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

- 主は モ ― セ と アロン に 言われた，
- 「わたしにむかってつぶやくこの 惡い 會衆をいつまで 忍ぶことができようか． わたしは イスラエル の 人¿が， わたしにむかってつぶやくのを 聞いた．
- あなたは 彼らに 言いなさい， 『主は 言われる， 「わたしは 生きている． あなたがたが， わたしの 耳に 語ったように， わたしはあなたがたにするであろう．
- あなたがたは 死體となって， この 荒野に 倒れるであろう． あなたがたのうち， わたしにむかってつぶやいた 者， すなわち， すべて 數えられた 二十歲以上の 者はみな 倒れるであろう．

- And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
- How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
- Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
- Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.
- Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

- しかし， あなたがたが， えじきになるであろうと 言ったあなたがたの 子供は， わたしが 導いて， はいるであろう． 彼らはあなたがたが， いやしめた 地を 知るようになるであろう．
- しかしあなたがたは 死體となってこの 荒野に 倒れるであろう．
- あなたがたの 子たちは， あなたがたの 死體が 荒野に 朽ち 果てるまで 四十年のあいだ， 荒野で 羊飼となり， あなたがたの 不信の 罪を 負うであろう．
- あなたがたは， かの 地を 探った 四十日の 日數にしたがい， その 一日を 一年として， 四十年のあいだ， 自分の 罪を 負い， わたしがあなたがたを 遠ざかったことを 知るであろう 」．
- 主なるわたしがこれを 言う． わたしは 必ずわたしに 逆らって 集まったこの 惡い 會衆に， これをことごとく 行うであろう． 彼らはこの 荒野に 朽ち， ここで 死ぬであろう 』」．

- But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
- But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
- And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
- After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
- I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

- こうして， モ ― セ につかわされ， かの 地を 探りに 行き， 歸ってきて， その 地を 惡く 言い， 全會衆を， モ ― セ にむかって， つぶやかせた 人¿，
- すなわち， その 地を 惡く 言いふらした 人¿は， 疫病にかかって 主の 前に 死んだが，
- その 地を 探りに 行った 人¿のうち， ヌン の 子 ヨシュア と， エフンネ の 子 カレブ とは 生き 殘った．
- モ ― セ が， これらのことを， イスラエル のすべての 人¿に 告げたとき， 民は 非常に 悲しみ，
- 朝早く 起きて 山の 頂きに 登って 言った， 「わたしたちはここにいる． さあ， 主が 約束された 所へ 上って 行こう． わたしたちは 罪を 犯したのだから 」．

- And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
- Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
- But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
- And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
- And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.

- モ ― セ は 言った， 「あなたがたは， それをなし 遂げることもできないのに， どうして， そのように 主の 命にそむくのか．
- あなたがたは 上って 行ってはならない． 主があなたがたのうちにおられないから， あなたがたは 敵の 前に， 擊ち 破られるであろう．
- そこには， アマレク びとと， カナン びとがあなたがたの 前にいるから， あなたがたは， つるぎに 倒れるであろう． あなたがたがそむいて， 主に 從わなかったゆえ， 主はあなたがたと 共におられないからである 」．

- And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
- Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
- For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
- But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
- Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
