- ユダ の 王 エホヤキム の 治世の 第三年に バビロン の 王 ネブカデネザル は エルサレム にきて， これを 攻め 圍んだ．
- 主は ユダ の 王 エホヤキム と， 神の 宮の 器具の 一部とを， 彼の 手にわたされたので， 彼はこれを シナル の 地の 自分の 神の 宮に 携えゆき， その 器具を 自分の 神の 藏に 納めた．
- 時に 王は 宦官の 長 アシペナズ に， イスラエル の 人¿の 中から， 王の 血統の 者と， 貴族たる 者數人とを， 連れて 來るように 命じた．
- すなわち 身に 傷がなく， 容姿が 美しく， すべての 知惠にさとく， 知識があって， 思慮深く， 王の 宮に 仕えるに 足る 若者を 連れてこさせ， これに カルデヤ びとの 文學と 言語とを 學ばせようとした．
- そして 王は 王の 食べる 食物と， 王の 飮む 酒の 中から， 日¿の 分を 彼らに 與えて， 三年のあいだ 彼らを 養い 育て， その 後， 彼らをして 王の 前に， はべらせようとした．

- In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
- And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
- And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;
- Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
- And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

- 彼らのうちに， ユダ の 部族の ダニエル ， ハナニヤ ， ミシャエル ， アザリヤ があった．
- 宦官の 長は 彼らに 名を 與えて， ダニエル を ベルテシャザル と 名づけ， ハナニヤ を シャデラク と 名づけ， ミシャエル を メシャク と 名づけ， アザリヤ を アベデネゴ と 名づけた．
- ダニエル は 王の 食物と， 王の 飮む 酒とをもって， 自分を 汚すまいと， 心に 思い 定めたので， 自分を 汚させることのないように， 宦官の 長に 求めた．
- 神は ダニエル をして， 宦官の 長の 前に， 惠みとあわれみとを 得させられたので，
- 宦官の 長は ダニエル に 言った， 「わが 主なる 王は， あなたがたの 食べ 物と， 飮み 物とを 定められたので， わたしはあなたがたの 健康の 狀態が， 同年輩の 若者たちよりも 惡いと， 王が 見られることを 恐れるのです． そうすればあなたがたのために， わたしのこうべが， 王の 前に 危くなるでしょう 」．

- Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
- Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
- But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
- Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.
- And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.

- そこで ダニエル は 宦官の 長が ダニエル ， ハナニヤ ， ミシャエル および アザリヤ の 上に 立てた 家令に 言った，
- 「どうぞ， しもべらを 十日の 間ためしてください． わたしたちにただ 野菜を 與えて 食べさせ， 水を 飮ませ，
- そしてわたしたちの 顔色と， 王の 食物を 食べる 若者の 顔色とをくらべて 見て， あなたの 見るところにしたがって， しもべらを 扱ってください 」．
- 家令はこの 事について 彼らの 言うところを 聞きいれ， 十日の 間， 彼らをためした．
- 十日の 終りになってみると， 彼らの 顔色は 王の 食物を 食べたすべての 若者よりも 美しく， また 肉も 肥え 太っていた．

- Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
- Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.
- Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
- So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.
- And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

- それで 家令は 彼らの 食物と， 彼らの 飮むべき 酒とを 除いて， 彼らに 野菜を 與えた．
- この 四人の 者には， 神は 知識を 與え， すべての 文學と 知惠にさとい 者とされた． ダニエル はまたすべての 幻と 夢とを 理解した．
- さて， 王が 命じたところの 若者を 召し 入れるまでの 日數が 過ぎたので， 宦官の 町は 彼らを ネブカデネザル の 前に 連れていった．
- 王が 彼らと 語ってみると， 彼らすべての 中には ダニエル ， ハナニヤ ， ミシャエル ， アザリヤ にならぶ 者がなかったので， 彼らは 王の 前にはべることとなった．
- 王が 彼らにさまざまの 事を 尋ねてみると， 彼らは 知惠と 理解において， 全國の 博士， 法術士にまさること 十倍であった．

- Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
- As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
- Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.
- And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.
- And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

- ダニエル は クロス 王の 元年まで 仕えていた．

- And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
