	창세기 42:1-43:15 가나안 땅에 흉년이 들어 애굽에 곡물을 사러 온 요셉의 형들은 요셉과 첫 대면을 하게 되었다. 요셉은 형들을 시험해 보기 위해 형들을 정탐꾼으로 몰아 그들 중 한 사람을 인질로 잡아 두고 베냐민을 데리고 다시 오라고 명령하였다. 야곱은 베냐민을 보내려 하지 않았으나 유다가 자신을 담보로 야곱을 설득하였다. 결국 야곱은 전능하신 하나님을 의지하고 베냐민을 보내기로 결단을 내렸다.

	요셉과 형들의 1차 대면(42:1-42:25)

ヤコブはエジプトに穀物があると知って，むすこたちに言った，「あなたがたはなぜ顔を見合わせているのですか」．

また言った，「エジプトに穀物があるということだが，あなたがたはそこへ下って行って，そこから，われわれのため穀物を買ってきなさい．そうすれば，われわれは生きながらえて，死を免れるであろう」．

そこでヨセフの十人の兄弟は穀物を買うためにエジプトへ下った．

しかし，ヤコブはヨセフの弟ベニヤミンを兄弟たちと一緖にやらなかった．彼が災に會うのを恐れたからである．

こうしてイスラエルの子らは穀物を買おうと人¿に交じってやってきた．カナンの地にききんがあったからである．

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you staring at one another?"

He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die."

Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.

But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "I am afraid that harm may befall him."

So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

ときにヨセフは國のつかさであって，國のすべての民に穀物を賣ることをしていた．ヨセフの兄弟たちはきて，地にひれ伏し，彼を拜した．

ヨセフは兄弟たちを見て，それと知ったが，彼らに向かっては知らぬ者のようにし，荒¿しく語った．すなわち彼らに言った，「あなたがたはどこからきたのか」．彼らは答えた，「食糧を買うためにカナンの地からきました」．

Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him.

Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and said to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land."

Then they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

われわれは皆，ひとりの人の子で，眞實な者です．しもべらは回し者ではありません」．

ヨセフは彼らに言った，「いや，あなたがたはこの國のすきをうかがうためにきたのです」．

彼らは言った，「しもべらは十二人兄弟で，カナンの地にいるひとりの人の子です．末の弟は今，父と一緖にいますが，他のひとりはいなくなりました」．

ヨセフは彼らに言った，「わたしが言ったとおり，あなたがたは回し者です．

あなたがたをこうしてためしてみよう．パロのいのちにかけて誓います．末の弟がここにこなければ，あなたがたはここを出ることはできません．

"We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies."

Yet he said to them, "No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!"

But they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive."

Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies;

by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

あなたがたのひとりをやって弟を連れてこさせなさい．それまであなたがたをつないでおいて，あなたがたに誠實があるかどうか，あなたがたの言葉をためしてみよう．パロのいのちにかけて誓います．あなたがたは確かに回し者です」．

ヨセフは彼らをみな一緖に三日の間，監禁所に入れた．

三日目にヨセフは彼らに言った，「こうすればあなたがたは助かるでしょう．わたしは神を恐れます．

もしあなたがたが眞實な者なら，兄弟のひとりをあなたがたのいる監禁所に殘し，あなたがたは穀物を携えて行って，家族の飢えを救いなさい．

そして末の弟をわたしのもとに連れてきなさい．そうすればあなたがたの言葉のほんとうであることがわかって，死を免れるでしょう」．彼らはそのようにした．

"Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies."

So he put them all together in prison for three days.

Now Joseph said to them on the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God:

if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,

and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die." And they did so.

彼らは互に言った，「確かにわれわれは弟の事で罪がある．彼がしきりに願った時，その心の苦しみを見ながら，われわれは聞き入れなかった．それでこの苦しみに會うのだ」．

ルベンが彼らに答えて言った，「わたしはあなたがたに，この子供に罪を犯すなと言ったではないか．それにもかかわらず，あなたがたは聞き入れなかった．それで彼の血の報いを受けるのです」．

彼らはヨセフが聞きわけているのを知らなかった．相互の間に通譯者がいたからである．

ヨセフは彼らを離れて行って泣き，また歸ってきて彼らと語り，そのひとりシメオンを捕えて，彼らの目の前で縛った．

そしてヨセフは人¿に命じて，彼らの袋に穀物を滿たし，めいめいの銀を袋に返し，道中の食料を與えさせた．ヨセフはこのように彼らにした．

Then they said to one another, "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us."

Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not tell you, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Now comes the reckoning for his blood."

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

He turned away from them and wept But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.

	야곱의 결단(42:26-43:15)

彼らは穀物をろばに負わせてそこを去った．

そのひとりが宿で，ろばに飼葉をやるため袋をあけて見ると，袋の口に自分の銀があった．

彼は兄弟たちに言った，「わたしの銀は返してある．しかも見よ，それは袋の中にある」．そこで彼らは非常に驚き，互に震えながら言った，「神がわれわれにされたこのことは何事だろう」．

こうして彼らはカナンの地にいる父ヤコブのもとに歸り，その身に起った事をことごとく告げて言った，

「あの國の君は，われわれに荒¿しく語り，國をうかがう回し者だと言いました．

So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.

As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

Then he said to his brothers, "My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack." And their hearts sank, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,

"The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

われわれは彼に答えました，『われわれは眞實な者であって回し者ではない．

われわれは十二人兄弟で，同じ父の子である．ひとりはいなくなり，末の弟は今父と共にカナンの地にいる』．

その國の君であるその人はわれわれに言いました，『わたしはこうしてあなたがたの眞實な者であるのを知ろう．あなたがたは兄弟のひとりをわたしのもとに殘し，穀物を携えて行って，家族の飢えを救いなさい．

そして末の弟をわたしのもとに連れてきなさい．そうすればあなたがたが回し者ではなく，眞實な者であるのを知って，あなたがたの兄弟を返し，この國であなたがたに取引させましょう』」．

彼らが袋のものを出して見ると，めいめいの金包みが袋の中にあったので，彼らも父も金包みを見て恐れた．

"But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies.

'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.'

"The man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.

'But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.'"

Now it came about as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.

父ヤコブは彼らに言った，「あなたがたはわたしに子を失わせた．ヨセフはいなくなり，シメオンもいなくなった．今度はベニヤミンをも取り去る．これらはみなわたしの身にふりかかって來るのだ」．

ルベンは父に言った，「もしわたしが彼をあなたのもとに連れて歸らなかったら，わたしのふたりの子を殺してください．ただ彼をわたしの手にまかせてください．わたしはきっと，あなたのもとに彼を連れて歸ります」．

ヤコブは言った，「わたしの子はあなたがたと共に下って行ってはならない．彼の兄は死に，ただひとり彼が殘っているのだから．もしあなたがたの行く道で彼が災に會えば，あなたがたは，しらがのわたしを悲しんで陰府に下らせるであろう」．

Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."

Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my care, and I will return him to you."

But Jacob said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow."

ききんはその地に激しかった．

彼らがエジプトから携えてきた穀物を食い盡した時，父は彼らに言った，「また行って，われわれのために少しの食糧を買ってきなさい」．

ユダは父に答えて言った，「あの人はわれわれをきびしく戒めて，弟が一緖でなければ，わたしの顔を見てはならないと言いました．

もしあなたが弟をわれわれと一緖にやってくださるなら，われわれは下って行って，あなたのために食糧を買ってきましょう．

Now the famine was severe in the land.

So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."

Judah spoke to him, however, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

"If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

"But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

イスラエルは言った，「なぜ，もうひとりの弟があるとあの人に言って，わたしを苦しめるのか」．

彼らは言った，「あの人がわれわれと一族とのことを問いただして，父はまだ生きているか，もうひとりの弟があるかと言ったので，問われるままに答えましたが，その人が，弟を連れてこいと言おうとは，どうして知ることができたでしょう」．

ユダは父イスラエルに言った，「あの子をわたしと一緖にやってくだされば，われわれは立って行きましょう．そしてわれわれもあなたも，われわれの子供らも生きながらえ，死を免れましょう．

わたしが彼の身を請け合います．わたしの手から彼を求めなさい．もしわたしが彼をあなたのもとに連れ歸って，あなたの前に置かなかったら，わたしはあなたに對して永久に罪を負いましょう．

もしわれわれがこんなにためらわなかったら，今ごろは二度も行ってきたでしょう」．

Then Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?"

But they said, "The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"

Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

"I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.

"For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice."

父イスラエルは彼らに言った，「それではこうしなさい．この國の名産を器に入れ，携え下ってその人に贈り物にしなさい．すなわち少しの乳香，少しの蜜，香料，もつやく，ふすだしう，あめんどう．

そしてその上に，倍額の銀を手に持って行きなさい．また袋の口に返してあった銀は持って行って返しなさい．たぶんそれは誤りであったのでしょう．

弟も連れ，立って，またその人の所へ行きなさい．

どうか全能の神がその人の前であなたがたをあわれみ，もうひとりの兄弟とベニヤミンとを，返させてくださるように．もしわたしが子を失わなければならないのなら，失ってもよい」．

そこでその人¿は贈り物を取り，また倍額の銀を携え，ベニヤミンを連れ，立ってエジプトへ下り，ヨセフの前に立った．

Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

"Take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

"Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."

So the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
