- 兄弟たちよ． 世のならわしを 例にとって 言おう． 人間の 遺言でさえ， いったん 作成されたら， これを 無效にしたり， これに 付け 加えたりすることは， だれにもできない．
- さて， 約束は， アブラハム と 彼の 子孫とに 對してなされたのである． それは， 多數をさして「子孫たちとに 」と 言わずに， ひとりをさして「あなたの 子孫とに 」と 言っている． これは， キリスト のことである．
- わたしの 言う 意味は， こうである． 神によってあらかじめ 立てられた 契約が， 四百三十年の 後にできた 律法によって 破棄されて， その 約束がむなしくなるようなことはない．
- もし 相續が， 律法に 基いてなされるとすれば， もはや 約束に 基いたものではない． ところが 事實， 神は 約束によって， 相續の 惠みを アブラハム に 賜わったのである．
- それでは， 律法はなんであるか． それは 違反を 促すため， あとから 加えられたのであって， 約束されていた 子孫が 來るまで 存續するだけのものであり， かつ， 天使たちをとおし， 仲介者の 手によって 制定されたものにすぎない．

- Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.
- Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.
- What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.
- For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.
- Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.

- 仲介者なるものは， 一方だけに 屬する 者ではない． しかし， 神はひとりである．
- では， 律法は 神の 約束と 相いれないものか． 斷じてそうではない． もし 人を 生かす 力のある 律法が 與えられていたとすれば， 義はたしかに 律法によって 實現されたであろう．
- しかし， 約束が， 信じる 人¿に イエス · キリスト に 對する 信仰によって 與えられるために， 聖書はすべての 人を 罪の 下に 閉じ ¿めたのである．
- しかし， 信仰が 現れる 前には， わたしたちは 律法の 下で 監視されており， やがて 啓示される 信仰の 時まで 閉じ ¿められていた．
- このようにして 律法は， 信仰によって 義とされるために， わたしたちを キリスト に 連れて 行く 養育掛となったのである．

- Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.
- Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.
- But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
- But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
- Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

- しかし， いったん 信仰が 現れた 以上， わたしたちは， もはや 養育掛のもとにはいない．
- あなたがたはみな， キリスト · イエス にある 信仰によって， 神の 子なのである．
- キリスト に 合う バプテスマ を 受けたあなたがたは， 皆 キリスト を 着たのである．
- もはや， ユダヤ 人も ギリシヤ 人もなく， 奴隷も 自由人もなく， 男も 女もない． あなたがたは 皆， キリスト · イエス にあって 一つだからである．
- もし キリスト のものであるなら， あなたがたは アブラハム の 子孫であり， 約束による 相續人なのである．

- But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
- For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
- There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.
