	사무엘상 11:1-13:23 왕으로 선출되었으나 명목상의 왕에 불과하던 사울은 길르앗 야베스 전투에서 승리함으로 왕권을 확립하였다. 사무엘은 백성들에게 고별 설교를 통해 그들의 잘못을 지적하며, 오직 하나님을 경외할 것을 권고했다. 블레셋과의 전투에 임한 사울이 전세가 위급한 가운데 하나님께 잘못된 제사를 드리자 사무엘은 그의 왕권이 길지 못할 것을 예고했다.

	사울의 야베스 구원(11:1-11:15)

さて，アンモン人のナハシュが攻め上って來て，ギレアドのヤベシュを包圍した．ヤベシュの全住民はナハシュに言った．「我¿と契約を結んでください．我¿はあなたに仕えます．」

アンモン人のナハシュは答えた．「お前たちと契約を結ぼう．ただし，お前たち全員の右の目をえぐり出すのが條件だ．それをもって全イスラエルを侮辱しよう．」

ヤベシュの長老たちは彼に言った．「七日間の猶予をください．イスラエルの全土に使者を立てます．救ってくれる者がいなければ，我¿はあなたのもとへ出て行きます．」

使者はサウルのいるギブアに來て，事の次第を民に報告した．民のだれもが聲をあげて泣いた．

そこへ，サウルが牛を追って畑から戾って來た．彼は尋ねた．「民が泣いているが，何事か起こったのか．」彼らはヤベシュの人¿の言葉を傳えた．

Nahash the Ammonite went up and besieged Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to him, "Make a treaty with us, and we will be subject to you."

But Nahash the Ammonite replied, "I will make a treaty with you only on the condition that I gouge out the right eye of every one of you and so bring disgrace on all Israel."

The elders of Jabesh said to him, "Give us seven days so we can send messengers throughout Israel; if no one comes to rescue us, we will surrender to you."

When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and reported these terms to the people, they all wept aloud.

Just then Saul was returning from the fields, behind his oxen, and he asked, "What is wrong with the people? Why are they weeping?" Then they repeated to him what the men of Jabesh had said.

それを聞くうちに神の靈がサウルに激しく降った．彼は怒りに燃えて，

When Saul heard their words, the Spirit of God came upon him in power, and he burned with anger.

He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent the pieces by messengers throughout Israel, proclaiming, "This is what will be done to the oxen of anyone who does not follow Saul and Samuel." Then the terror of the LORD fell on the people, and they turned out as one man.

When Saul mustered them at Bezek, the men of Israel numbered three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

They told the messengers who had come, "Say to the men of Jabesh Gilead, 'By the time the sun is hot tomorrow, you will be delivered.' " When the messengers went and reported this to the men of Jabesh, they were elated.

They said to the Ammonites, "Tomorrow we will surrender to you, and you can do to us whatever seems good to you."

翌日，サウルは民を三つの組に分け，朝の見張りの時刻にアンモン人の陣營に突入し，日盛りのころまで彼らを討った．生き殘った者はちりぢりになり，二人一緖に生き殘った者はいなかった．

The next day Saul separated his men into three divisions; during the last watch of the night they broke into the camp of the Ammonites and slaughtered them until the heat of the day. Those who survived were scattered, so that no two of them were left together.

The people then said to Samuel, "Who was it that asked, 'Shall Saul reign over us?' Bring these men to us and we will put them to death."

But Saul said, "No one shall be put to death today, for this day the LORD has rescued Israel."

Then Samuel said to the people, "Come, let us go to Gilgal and there reaffirm the kingship."

So all the people went to Gilgal and confirmed Saul as king in the presence of the LORD. There they sacrificed fellowship offerings before the LORD, and Saul and all the Israelites held a great celebration.

	사무엘의 고별사(12:1-12:25)

サムエルは全イスラエルに向かって言った．「わたしは，あなたたちがわたしに求めたことについては，すべてあなたたちの聲に從い，あなたたちの上に王を立てた．

今からは王が，あなたたちを率いて步む．わたしは年老いて，髮も白くなった．そして，息子たちはあなたたちと共にいる．わたしは若いころから今日まであなたたちを率いて步んできたが，

今，主と主が油を注がれた方の前で，わたしを訴えなさい．わたしが，だれかの牛を取り上げたことがあるか．だれかのろばを取り上げたことがあるか．だれかを抑えつけ，だれかを踏みにじったことがあるか．だれかの手から賄賂を取って何かを見逃してやったことがあるか．あるなら，償おう．」

彼らは答えた．「あなたは我¿を抑えつけたことも，踏みにじったこともありませんでした．だれの手からも何一つ取り上げたりしませんでした．」

サムエルは言った．「今日，あなたたちがわたしの手に何一つ訴えるべきことを見いださなかったことについては，主が證人であり，主が油を注がれた方が證人だ．」彼らは答えた．「確かに證人です．」

Samuel said to all Israel, "I have listened to everything you said to me and have set a king over you.

Now you have a king as your leader. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are here with you. I have been your leader from my youth until this day.

Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the LORD and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these, I will make it right."

"You have not cheated or oppressed us," they replied. "You have not taken anything from anyone's hand."

Samuel said to them, "The LORD is witness against you, and also his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand." "He is witness," they said.

サムエルは民に話した．「主は，モ ― セとアロンを用いて，あなたたちの先祖をエジプトから導き上った方だ．

さあ，しっかり立ちなさい．主があなたたちとその先祖とに行われた救いの御業のすべてを，主の御前で說き聞かせよう．

Then Samuel said to the people, "It is the LORD who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your forefathers up out of Egypt.

Now then, stand here, because I am going to confront you with evidence before the LORD as to all the righteous acts performed by the LORD for you and your fathers.

"After Jacob entered Egypt, they cried to the LORD for help, and the LORD sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your forefathers out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

"But they forgot the LORD their God; so he sold them into the hand of Sisera, the commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them.

They cried out to the LORD and said, 'We have sinned; we have forsaken the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths. But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.'

主はエルバアル，ベダン，エフタ，サムエルを遣わし，あなたたちを周圍の敵の手から救い出してくださった．それであなたたちは安全に住めるようになった．

ところが，アンモン人の王ナハシュが攻めて來たのを見ると，あなたたちの神，主があなたたちの王であるにもかかわらず，『いや，王が我¿の上に君臨すべきだ』とわたしに要求した．

今，見よ，あなたたちが求め，選んだ王がここにいる．主はあなたたちに王をお與えになる．

だから，あなたたちが主を畏れ，主に仕え，御聲に聞き從い，主の御命令に背かず，あなたたちもあなたたちの上に君臨する王も，あなたたちの神，主に從うならそれでよい．

しかし，もし主の御聲に聞き從わず，主の御命令に背くなら，主の御手は，あなたたちの先祖に下ったように，あなたたちにも下る．

Then the LORD sent Jerub-Baal, Barak, Jephthah and Samuel, and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies on every side, so that you lived securely.

"But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, 'No, we want a king to rule over us'-even though the LORD your God was your king.

Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for; see, the LORD has set a king over you.

If you fear the LORD and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the LORD your God-good!

But if you do not obey the LORD, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.

さあ，しっかり立って，主があなたたちの目の前で行われる偉大な御業を見なさい．

今は小麥の刈り入れの時期ではないか．しかし，わたしが主に呼び求めると，主は雷と雨とを下される．それを見てあなたたちは，自分たちのために王を求めて主の御前に犯した惡の大きかったことを知り，悟りなさい．」

"Now then, stand still and see this great thing the LORD is about to do before your eyes!

Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call upon the LORD to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the LORD when you asked for a king."

Then Samuel called upon the LORD, and that same day the LORD sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the LORD and of Samuel.

The people all said to Samuel, "Pray to the LORD your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king."

"Do not be afraid," Samuel replied. "You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart.

むなしいものを慕ってそれて行ってはならない．それはむなしいのだから何の力もなく，救う力もない．

主はその偉大な御名のゆえに，御自分の民を決しておろそかにはなさらない．主はあなたたちを御自分の民と決めておられるからである．

わたしもまた，あなたたちのために祈ることをやめ，主に對して罪を犯すようなことは決してしない．あなたたちに正しく善い道を敎えよう．

主を畏れ，心を盡くし，まことをもって主に仕えなさい．主がいかに偉大なことをあなたたちに示されたかを悟りなさい．

惡を重ねるなら，主はあなたたちもあなたたちの王も滅ぼし去られるであろう．」

Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless.

For the sake of his great name the LORD will not reject his people, because the LORD was pleased to make you his own.

As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.

But be sure to fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.

Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will be swept away."

	사무엘의 책망(13:1-13:23)

サウルは王となって一年でイスラエル全體の王となり，二年たったとき，

イスラエルから三千人をえりすぐった．そのうちの二千人をミクマスとベテルの山地で自らのもとに，他の千人をベニヤミンのギブアでヨナタンのもとに置き，殘りの民はそれぞれの天幕に歸らせた．

ヨナタンは，ゲバに配置されていたペリシテの守備隊を打ち破った．ペリシテ人はそれを傳え聞いた．他方，サウルも國中に角笛を吹き鳴らして言った．「ヘブライ人よ，聞け．」

全イスラエルは，サウルがペリシテの守備隊を打ち破ったこと，イスラエルがペリシテ人の憎しみをかうことになったということを知った．民はギルガルのサウルのもとに呼び集められた．

Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.

Saul chose three thousand men from Israel; two thousand were with him at Micmash and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan at Gibeah in Benjamin. The rest of the men he sent back to their homes.

Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul had the trumpet blown throughout the land and said, "Let the Hebrews hear!"

So all Israel heard the news: "Saul has attacked the Philistine outpost, and now Israel has become a stench to the Philistines." And the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

The Philistines assembled to fight Israel, with three thousand chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Micmash, east of Beth Aven.

イスラエルの人¿は，自分たちが苦境に陷り，一人一人に危險が迫っているのを見て，洞窟，岩の裂け目，岩陰，穴藏，井戶などに身を隱した．

ヨルダン川を渡り，ガドやギレアドの地に逃げ延びたヘブライ人もあった．しかし，サウルはギルガルに踏みとどまり，從う兵は皆，サウルの後ろでおののいていた．

When the men of Israel saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns.

Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.

He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul's men began to scatter.

So he said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings. " And Saul offered up the burnt offering.

Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.

サムエルは言った．「あなたは何をしたのか．」サウルは答えた．「兵士がわたしから離れて散って行くのが目に見えているのに，あなたは約束の日に來てくださらない．しかも，ペリシテ軍はミクマスに集結しているのです．

サムエルは立ち上がり，ギルガルからベニヤミンのギブアに上って行った．サウルは，自分のもとにいた兵士を數えた．およそ六百人であった．

"What have you done?" asked Samuel. Saul replied, "When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Micmash,

I thought, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the LORD's favor.' So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering."

"You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command."

Then Samuel left Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin, and Saul counted the men who were with him. They numbered about six hundred.

サウル，息子ヨナタン，そして彼らの指揮下にいる兵はベニヤミンのゲバにとどまった．ペリシテ軍はミクマスに陣を敷いていた．

Saul and his son Jonathan and the men with them were staying in Gibeah in Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Micmash.

Raiding parties went out from the Philistine camp in three detachments. One turned toward Ophrah in the vicinity of Shual,

another toward Beth Horon, and the third toward the borderland overlooking the Valley of Zeboim facing the desert.

Not a blacksmith could be found in the whole land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, "Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears!"

So all Israel went down to the Philistines to have their plowshares, mattocks, axes and sickles sharpened.

鋤や ¿や三つまたの矛や斧の硏ぎ料，突き棒の修理料は一ピムであった．

こういうわけで，戰いの日にも，サウルとヨナタンの指揮下の兵士はだれも劍や槍を手にしていなかった．持っているのはサウルとその子ヨナタンだけであった．

ペリシテ軍の先陣は，ミクマスの渡しまで進んで來た．

The price was two thirds of a shekel for sharpening plowshares and mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening forks and axes and for repointing goads.

So on the day of the battle not a soldier with Saul and Jonathan had a sword or spear in his hand; only Saul and his son Jonathan had them.

Now a detachment of Philistines had gone out to the pass at Micmash.
