에스더

  본서는 아하수에로 왕의 통치 기간중 포로 귀환에 참여하지 않고 바사에 있던 유대 포로민들을 배경으로 에스더라는 한 지혜로운 유대 여인을 통하여 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성들을 대적자들의 위협에서 어떻게 보호하셨는가를 밝히고 있다.

  왕후 와스디가 폐위된 후, 새로운 왕후로 간택된 에스더의 사촌 모르드개는 왕의 암살 음모를 사전에 알고 왕의 생명을 구하였다. 왕의 신임을 받던 하만은 자신에게 절하지 않은 모르드개에게 분개하여 유대 민족을 멸절시킬 것을 계획한다. 이에 에스더는 목숨을 내걸고 왕께 간청하게 되고, 모르드개의 업적과 하만의 계락이 드러나 하만은 처형되고 유대인의 승리 속에 부림절 축제가 거행된다.

 

 

에스더 1:1-2:23

 아하수에로 왕의 잔치에서 왕후 와스디는 왕의 명령을 거부함으로써 폐위되었다. 그리고 새 왕후로 에스더가 간택되었다. 모르드개는 왕을 모살하려는 두 내시의 음모를 에스더를 통해 보고하였고, 그의 이름은 궁중 일기에 기록되었다.
  
  와스디의 폐위(1:1-1:22)    
 
  1. クセルクセス の 時代のことである． この クセルクセス は， インド から クシュ に 至るまで 百二十七州の 支配者であった．
  2. そのころ， クセルクセス 王は 要塞の 町 スサ で 王位につき，
  3. その 治世の 第三年に， 酒宴を 催し， 大臣， 家臣のことごとく， ペルシア と メディア の 軍人， 貴族および 諸州の 高官たちを 招いた．
  4. こうして 王は， 百八十日の 長期にわたって 自分の 國がどれほど 富み 榮え， その 威力がどれほど 貴く 輝かしいものであるかを 示した．
  5. それが 終わると， 王は 七日間， 酒宴を 王宮の 庭園で 催し， 要塞の 町 スサ に 住む 者を 皆， 身分の 上下を 問わず 招いた．
  1. This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush :
  2. At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa,
  3. and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials. The military leaders of Persia and Media, the princes, and the nobles of the provinces were present.
  4. For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty.
  5. When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days, in the enclosed garden of the king's palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest, who were in the citadel of Susa.
  1. 大理石の 柱から 柱へと 紅白の 組みひもが 張り 渡され， そこに 純白の 亞麻布， みごとな 綿織物， 紫の ¿幕が 一連の 銀の 輪によって 掛けられていた． また， 綠や 白の 大理石， 眞珠貝や 黑曜石を 使った モザイク の 床には， 金や 銀の 長いすが ¿べられていた．
  2. 酒を 供するための 金の 杯は 一つ 一つ 趣を 異にし， 王室用のぶどう 酒が， 王の 寬大さを 示すにふさわしく， 惜しげもなく 振る 舞われた．
  3. しかし， 定めによって 酒を 飮むことは 强いられてはいなかった． 王の 命令によって 給仕長たちは， 人¿に 思いどおりにさせていたからである．
  4. 王妃 ワシュティ も クセルクセス 王の 宮殿で 女のための 酒宴を 催していた．
  5. 七日目のことである． ぶどう 酒で 上機嫌になった クセルクセス 王は， そば 近く 仕える 宦官 メフマン ， ビゼタ ， ハルボナ ， ビグタ ， アバグタ ， ゼタル ， カルカス の 七人に 命じて，
  1. The garden had hangings of white and blue linen, fastened with cords of white linen and purple material to silver rings on marble pillars. There were couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and other costly stones.
  2. Wine was served in goblets of gold, each one different from the other, and the royal wine was abundant, in keeping with the king's liberality.
  3. By the king's command each guest was allowed to drink in his own way, for the king instructed all the wine stewards to serve each man what he wished.
  4. Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in the royal palace of King Xerxes.
  5. On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him--Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Carcas-
  1. 冠を 着けた 王妃 ワシュティ を 召し 出そうとした． その 美しさを 高官および 列席する 民に 見せようというのである． 王妃は 美しい 人であった．
  2. ところが， 王妃 ワシュティ は 宦官の 傳えた 王の 命令を 拒み， 來ようとしなかった． 王は 大いに 機嫌を 損ね， 怒りに 燃え，
  3. 經驗を 積んだ 賢人たちに 事を 諮った． 王の 身邊の 事柄はすべて， 國の 定めや 裁きに 通じている 人¿によって 審議されることになっていた．
  4. 王は， 王の 側近で， 王國の 最高の 地位にある， ペルシア と メディア の 七人の 大臣 カルシェナ ， シェタル ， アドマタ ， タルシシュ ， メレス ， マルセナ ， メムカン を 呼び 寄せた．
  5. 「王妃 ワシュティ は， わたしが 宦官によって 傳えた 命令に 從わなかった． この 場合， 國の 定めによれば 王妃をどのように 扱うべきか． 」
  1. to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at.
  2. But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger.
  3. Since it was customary for the king to consult experts in matters of law and justice, he spoke with the wise men who understood the times
  4. and were closest to the king--Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, the seven nobles of Persia and Media who had special access to the king and were highest in the kingdom.
  5. "According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?" he asked. "She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her."
  1. メムカン が 王と 大臣一同に 向かって 言った． 「王妃 ワシュティ のなさったことは， ただ 王のみならず， 國中のすべての 高官， すべての 民にとって 都合の 惡いことです．
  2. この 王妃の 事件が 知れ 渡りますと， 女たちは 皆， 『王妃 ワシュティ は 王に 召されても， お 出ましにならなかった 』と 申して， 夫を 輕蔑の 目で 見るようになります．
  3. 今日この 日にも， ペルシア と メディア の 高官夫人たちは， この 王妃の 事件を 聞いて， 王にお 仕えするすべての 高官に 向かってそう 申すにちがいありません． 何とも 侮辱的で 腹立たしいことです．
  4. もしもお 心に 適いますなら， 『ワシュティ が クセルクセス 王の 前に 出ることを 禁ずる． 王妃の 位は， より 優れた 他の 女に 與える 』との 命令を 王御自身お 下しになり， これを ペルシア と メディア の 國法の 中に 書き ¿ませ， 確定事項となさってはいかがでしょうか．
  5. お 出しになった 勅令がこの 大國の 津¿浦¿に 聞こえますと， 女たちは 皆， 身分のいかんにかかわらず 夫を 敬うようになりましょう． 」
  1. Then Memucan replied in the presence of the king and the nobles, "Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the peoples of all the provinces of King Xerxes.
  2. For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, 'King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.'
  3. This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the queen's conduct will respond to all the king's nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord.
  4. "Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she.
  5. Then when the king's edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest."
  1. 王にも 大臣たちにもこの 發言は 適切であると 思われ， 王は メムカン の 言うとおりにした．
  2. 王は 支配下のすべての 州に 勅書を 送ったが， それは 州ごとにその 州の 文字で， また， 民族ごとにその 民族の 言語で 書かれていた． すべての 男子が 自分の 家の 主人となり， 自分の 母國語で 話せるようにとの 計らいからであった．
  1. The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memucan proposed.
  2. He sent dispatches to all parts of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, proclaiming in each people's tongue that every man should be ruler over his own household.
 
  왕후로 뽑힌 에스더(2:1-2:23)    
 
  1. その 後， 怒りの 治まった クセルクセス 王は， ワシュティ とそのふるまい， 彼女に 下した 決定を 口にするようになった．
  2. 王に 仕える 侍從たちは 言った． 「王のために 美しいおとめを 探させてはいかがでしょうか．
  3. 全國各州に 特使を 送り， 美しいおとめを 一人殘らず 要塞の 町 スサ の 後宮に 集め， 後宮の 監督， 宦官 ヘガイ に 託し， 容姿を 美しくさせるのです．
  4. 御目にかなう 娘がいれば， ワシュティ に 代わる 王妃になさってはいかがでしょうか． 」これは 王の 意にかない， 王はそうすることにした．
  5. 要塞の 町 スサ に 一人の ユダヤ 人がいた． 名を モルデカイ といい， キシュ ， シムイ ， ヤイル と 續く ベニヤミン 族の 家系に 屬していた．
  1. Later when the anger of King Xerxes had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her.
  2. Then the king's personal attendants proposed, "Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king.
  3. Let the king appoint commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these beautiful girls into the harem at the citadel of Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king's eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let beauty treatments be given to them.
  4. Then let the girl who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti." This advice appealed to the king, and he followed it.
  5. Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish,
  1. キシュ は， バビロン 王 ネブカドネツァル によって， ユダ 王 エコンヤ と 共に エルサレム から 連れて 來られた 捕囚民の 中にいた．
  2. モルデカイ は， ハダサ に 兩親がいないので， その 後見人となっていた． 彼女が エステル で， モルデカイ にはいとこに 當たる． 娘は 姿も 顔立ちも 美しかった． 兩親を 亡くしたので， モルデカイ は 彼女を 自分の 娘として 引き 取っていた．
  3. さて， 王の 命令と 定めが 發布され， 大勢の 娘が 要塞の 町 スサ の ヘガイ のもとに 集められた． エステル も 王宮に 連れて 來られ， 後宮の 監督 ヘガイ に 託された．
  4. 彼は エステル に 好意を 抱き， 目をかけた． 早速化粧品と 食べ 物を 與え， 王宮からえり 拔きの 女官七人を 彼女にあてがい， 彼女を 女官たちと 共に 後宮で 特別扱いした．
  5. エステル は， モルデカイ に 命じられていたので， 自分が 屬する 民族と 親元を 明かさなかった．
  1. who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah.
  2. Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he had brought up because she had neither father nor mother. This girl, who was also known as Esther, was lovely in form and features, and Mordecai had taken her as his own daughter when her father and mother died.
  3. When the king's order and edict had been proclaimed, many girls were brought to the citadel of Susa and put under the care of Hegai. Esther also was taken to the king's palace and entrusted to Hegai, who had charge of the harem.
  4. The girl pleased him and won his favor. Immediately he provided her with her beauty treatments and special food. He assigned to her seven maids selected from the king's palace and moved her and her maids into the best place in the harem.
  5. Esther had not revealed her nationality and family background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so.
  1. モルデカイ は エステル の 安否を 氣遣い， どう 扱われるのかを 知ろうとして， 每日後宮の 庭の 前を 行ったり 來たりしていた．
  2. 十二か 月の 美容の 期間が 終わると， 娘たちは 順番に クセルクセス 王のもとに 召されることになった． 娘たちには 六か 月間 ミルラ 香油で， 次の 六か 月間ほかの 香料や 化粧品で 容姿を 美しくすることが 定められていた．
  3. こうして， どの 娘も 王のもとに 召されたが， 後宮から 王宮に 行くにあたって 娘が 持って 行きたいと 望むものは 何でも 與えられた．
  4. 娘は 夜行き， 朝歸って 別の 後宮に 連れて 行かれ， 側室たちの 監督， 宦官 シャアシュガズ に 託された． 王に 望まれ， 名指しで 呼び 出されるのでなければ， だれも 再び 行くことはなかった．
  5. モルデカイ の 伯父 アビハイル の 娘で， モルデカイ に 娘として 引き 取られていた エステル にも， 王のもとに 召される 順番が 回ってきたが， エステル は 後宮の 監督， 宦官 ヘガイ の 勸めるもの 以外に， 何も 望まなかった． エステル を 見る 人は 皆， 彼女を 美しいと 思った．
  1. Every day he walked back and forth near the courtyard of the harem to find out how Esther was and what was happening to her.
  2. Before a girl's turn came to go in to King Xerxes, she had to complete twelve months of beauty treatments prescribed for the women, six months with oil of myrrh and six with perfumes and cosmetics.
  3. And this is how she would go to the king: Anything she wanted was given her to take with her from the harem to the king's palace.
  4. In the evening she would go there and in the morning return to another part of the harem to the care of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the concubines. She would not return to the king unless he was pleased with her and summoned her by name.
  5. When the turn came for Esther (the girl Mordecai had adopted, the daughter of his uncle Abihail) to go to the king, she asked for nothing other than what Hegai, the king's eunuch who was in charge of the harem, suggested. And Esther won the favor of everyone who saw her.
  1. さて， エステル は 王宮の クセルクセス 王のもとに 連れて 行かれた． その 治世の 第七年の 第十の 月， すなわち テベト の 月のことである．
  2. 王はどの 女にもまして エステル を 愛し， エステル は 娘たちの 中で 王の 厚意と 愛に 最も 惠まれることとなった． 王は 彼女の 頭に 王妃の 冠を 置き， ワシュティ に 代わる 王妃とした．
  3. 次いで， 王は 盛大な 酒宴を 催して， 大臣， 家臣をことごとく 招いた． これが， 「エステル の 酒宴 」である． 更に， 王は 諸州に 對し 免稅を 布告し， 王の 寬大さを 示すにふさわしい 祝いの 品を 與えた．
  4. 再び 若い 娘が 集められた 時のことである． モルデカイ は 王宮の 門に 座っていた．
  5. エステル は モルデカイ に 命じられていたので， 自分の 屬する 民族と 親元を 明かすことをしなかった． モルデカイ に 養われていたときと 同樣， その 言葉に 從っていた．
  1. She was taken to King Xerxes in the royal residence in the tenth month, the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
  2. Now the king was attracted to Esther more than to any of the other women, and she won his favor and approval more than any of the other virgins. So he set a royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.
  3. And the king gave a great banquet, Esther's banquet, for all his nobles and officials. He proclaimed a holiday throughout the provinces and distributed gifts with royal liberality.
  4. When the virgins were assembled a second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate.
  5. But Esther had kept secret her family background and nationality just as Mordecai had told her to do, for she continued to follow Mordecai's instructions as she had done when he was bringing her up.
  1. さてそのころ， モルデカイ が 王宮の 門に 座っていると， 王の 私室の 番人である 二人の 宦官 ビグタン と テレシュ が 何事かに 憤慨し， クセルクセス 王を 倒そうと 謀っていた．
  2. それを 知った モルデカイ は 王妃 エステル に 知らせたので， 彼女は モルデカイ の 名でこれを 王に 告げた．
  3. 早速この 件は 搜査されて 明らかにされ， 二人は 木につるされて 處刑された． この 事件は 王の 前で 宮廷日誌に 記入された．
  1. During the time Mordecai was sitting at the king's gate, Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's officers who guarded the doorway, became angry and conspired to assassinate King Xerxes.
  2. But Mordecai found out about the plot and told Queen Esther, who in turn reported it to the king, giving credit to Mordecai.
  3. And when the report was investigated and found to be true, the two officials were hanged on a gallows. All this was recorded in the book of the annals in the presence of the king.
