- ユダ と ベニヤミン の 敵は， 捕囚の 子らが イスラエル の 神， 主のために 聖所を 建てていることを 聞いて，
- ゼルバベル と 家長たちのもとに 來て 言った． 「建築を 手傳わせてください． わたしたちも 同じようにあなたがたの 神を 尋ね 求める 者です． アッシリア の 王 エサル · ハドン によってここに 連れて 來られたときから， わたしたちはこの 神にいけにえをささげています． 」
- しかし， ゼルバベル と イエシュア ， 他の イスラエル の 家長たちは 言った． 「わたしたちの 神のために 神殿を 建てるのは， あなたたちにではなく， わたしたちに 託された 仕事です． ペルシア の 王 キュロス がそう 命じたのですから， わたしたちだけで イスラエル の 神， 主のために 神殿を 建てます． 」
- そこで， その 地の 住民は， 建築に 取りかかろうとする ユダ の 民の 士氣を 鈍らせ 脅かす 一方，
- ペルシア の 王 キュロス の 存命中から ダレイオス の 治世まで， 參議官を 買收して 建築計畵を 挫折させようとした．

- Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
- Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
- But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
- Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
- And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

- クセルクセス の 治世にはその 治世の 初めに， ユダ と エルサレム の 住民に 對する 告訴狀が 書き 送られた．
- また， アルタクセルクセス の 時代には， ビシュラム ， ミトレダト ， タベエル ， およびその 仲間が ペルシア 王 アルタクセルクセス に 書簡を 送った． その 文書は アラム 文字で 記され， アラム 語に 譯されていた．
- 行政官 レフム と 書記官 シムシャイ は アルタクセルクセス 王にあて， エルサレム についてこのような 書簡を 書き 送った．
- 「行政官 レフム と 書記官 シムシャイ は， 他の 仲間たち， 裁判官と 巡察官， それに タルペル 人， ペルシア 人， ウルク 人， バビロニア 人， スサ 人すなわち エラム 人，
- 更に， 貴く 偉大な オスナパル が サマリア の 町¿と ユ ― フラテス 西方の 他の 地域に 移住させたほかの 諸國民と 共に， ……． 」

- And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
- And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
- Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
- Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
- And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

- これが， 彼らの 書き 送った 書簡の 寫しである． 「アルタクセルクセス 王に， ユ ― フラテス 西方の 臣下一同より 御報告します．
- 王のもとからこちらに 上って 來た ユダ の 者らが エルサレム に 着き， 反逆と 惡意の 都を 再建していることをご 存じでしょうか． 彼らは 旣に 城壁の 工事を 始め， 基礎を 修復しました．
- ご 存じでしょうが， もしその 都が 再建され， 城壁が 完成しますと， 彼らは 年貢， 關稅， 交通稅を 納めず， 王に 次¿と 損害を 與えることになるに 相違ありません．
- 王室から 俸給をいただく 臣下として， 王に 對する 非禮は 見過ごすわけにはいかないので， 事情をお 知らせいたします．
- あなたの 先祖の 殘された 記錄をお 調べになれば， そこに 出ているはずで， お 分かりになることですが， この 都は 反逆の 都で， 歷代の 王と 諸州に 損害を 與えてきました． 昔から 反亂を 繰り 返し， そのためにこの 都は 破壞されたのです．

- This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
- Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
- Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
- Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
- That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

- この 都が 再建され， 城壁が 完成すれば， ユ ― フラテス の 西方には， 王の 領土がなくなるということを， あらかじめお 知らせします． 」
- 王は， 次のような 返事を 送った． 「行政官 レフム ， 書記官 シムシャイ をはじめ， サマリア および 他の ユ ― フラテス 西方の 地方にいるその 友人たちに， 平和を 祈る．
- さて， あなたたちの 送ってくれた 公文書は， わたしの 前で 飜譯され， 讀み 上げられた．
- 命じて 調べさせたところ， その 都は 昔から 歷代の 王に 對して 反抗し， 反逆と 反亂を 起こしたということが 確認された．
- また 强い 王が エルサレム にいて， ユ ― フラテス 西方全土を 統治し， 年貢， 關稅， 交通稅を 徵收したことがあった．

- We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
- Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
- The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
- And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
- There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

- 從って 今， その 人¿に 工事を 中止するように 命令せよ． 改めてわたしが 命令を 出すまで， その 都は 再建されてはならない．
- この 事をなおざりにしないように 留意し， 損失が 大きくなって， 王になおいっそうの 迷惑が 及ばぬようにせよ． 」
- この アルタクセルクセス 王の 公文書の 寫しは， レフム ， 書記官 シムシャイ およびその 仲間の 前で 朗讀された． 彼らは エルサレム にいる ユダ の 人¿のもとに 急いで 行き， 强引に 武力で 工事を 中止させた．
- そのときから， エルサレム の 神殿の 工事は 中斷されたまま， ペルシア の 王 ダレイオス の 治世第二年にまで 及んだ．

- Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
- Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
- Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
- Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
