- アルタクセルクセス 王の 第二十年， ニサン の 月のことであった． 王はぶどう 酒を 前にし， わたしがぶどう 酒を 取って， 王に 差し 上げていた． わたしは 王の 前で 暗い 表情をすることはなかったが，
- 王はわたしに 尋ねた． 「暗い 表情をしているが， どうかしたのか． 病氣ではあるまい． 何か 心に 惱みがあるにちがいない． 」わたしは 非常に 恐縮して，
- 王に 答えた． 「王がとこしえに 生き 長らえられますように． わたしがどうして 暗い 表情をせずにおれましょう． 先祖の 墓のある 町が 荒廢し， 城門は 火で 燒かれたままなのです． 」
- すると 王は， 「何を 望んでいるのか 」と 言った． わたしは 天にいます 神に 祈って，
- 王に 答えた． 「もしも 僕がお 心に 適い， 王にお 差し 支えがなければ， わたしを ユダ に， 先祖の 墓のある 町にお 遣わしください． 町を 再建したいのでございます． 」

- And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
- Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
- And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
- Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
- And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

- 王は 傍らに 座っている 王妃と 共に， 「旅にはどれほどの 時を 要するのか． いつ 歸れるのか 」と 尋ねた． わたしの 派遣について 王が 好意的であったので， どれほどの 期間が 必要なのかを 說明し，
- 更に， わたしは 王に 言った． 「もしもお 心に 適いますなら， わたしが ユダ に 行き 着くまで， わたしを 通過させるようにと， ユ ― フラテス 西方の 長官たちにあてた 書狀をいただきとうございます．
- また， 神殿のある 都の 城門に 梁を 置くために， 町を 取り 卷く 城壁のためとわたしが 入る 家のために 木材をわたしに 與えるように， と 王の 森林管理者 アサフ にあてた 書狀もいただきとうございます． 」神の 御手がわたしを 守ってくださったので， 王はわたしの 願いをかなえてくれた．
- こうして， わたしは ユ ― フラテス 西方の 長官のもとに 到着する 度に， 王の 書狀を 差し 出すことができた． 王はまた 將校と 騎兵をわたしと 共に 派遣してくれた．
- ホロニ 人 サンバラト と アンモン 人の 僕 トビヤ は， イスラエル の 人¿のためになることをしようとする 人が 遣わされて 來たと 聞いて， 非常に 機嫌を 損ねた．

- And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
- Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
- And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
- Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.
- When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

- わたしは エルサレム に 着き， 三日間過ごしてから，
- 夜， わずか 數名の 者と 共に 起きて 出かけた． だが， エルサレム で 何をすべきかについて， 神がわたしの 心に 示されたことは， だれにも 知らせなかった． わたしの 乘ったもののほか， 一頭の 動物も 引いて 行かなかった．
- 夜中に 谷の 門を 出て， 龍の 泉の 前から 糞の 門へと 巡って， エルサレム の 城壁を 調べた． 城壁は 破壞され， 城門は 燒け 落ちていた．
- 更に 泉の 門から 王の 池へと 行ったが， わたしの 乘っている 動物が 通る 所もないほどであった．
- 夜のうちに 谷に 沿って 上りながら 城壁を 調べ， 再び 谷の 門を 通って 歸った．

- So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
- And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
- And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
- Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
- Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.

- 役人たちは， わたしがどこに 行き， 何をしたか 知らなかった． それまでわたしは， ユダ の 人¿にも， 祭司にも， 貴族にも， 役人にも， 工事に 携わる 他の 人¿にも， 何も 知らせてはいなかった．
- やがてわたしは 彼らに 言った． 「御覽のとおり， わたしたちは 不幸の 中であえいでいる． エルサレム は 荒廢し， 城門は 燒け 落ちたままだ． エルサレム の 城壁を 建て 直そうではないか． そうすれば， もう 恥ずかしいことはない． 」
- 神の 御手が 惠み 深くわたしを 守り， 王がわたしに 言ってくれた 言葉を 彼らに 告げると， 彼らは「早速， 建築に 取りかかろう 」と 應じ， この 良い 企てに 奮い 立った．
- ところが， ホロニ 人 サンバラト ， アンモン 人の 僕 トビヤ ， アラブ 人 ゲシェム は， それを 聞いてわたしたちを 嘲笑い， さげすみ， こう 言った． 「お 前たちは 何をしようとしているのか． 王に 反逆しようとしているのか． 」
- そこでわたしは 反論した． 「天にいます 神御自ら， わたしたちにこの 工事を 成功させてくださる． その 僕であるわたしたちは 立ち 上がって 町を 再建する． あなたたちには， エルサレム の 中に 領分もなければ， それに 對する 權利も 記錄もない． 」

- And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
- Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
- Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
- But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
- Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
