- ネブカドネツァル 王が 卽位して 二年目のことであった． 王は 何度か 夢を 見て 不安になり， 眠れなくなった．
- 王は 命令を 出して， 占い 師， 祈¿師， まじない 師， 賢者を 呼び 出し， 自分の 夢を 說明させようとした． 彼らが 王の 前に 進み 出ると，
- 王は 言った． 「夢を 見たのだが， その 夢の 意味を 知りたくて 心が 落ち 着かない． 」
- 賢者たちは 王に アラム 語で 答えた． 「王樣がとこしえまでも 生き 永らえられますように． どうぞ 僕らにその 夢をお 話しください． 解釋を 申し 上げます． 」
- 王は 賢者たちに 答えた． 「いいか， わたしの 命令は 絶對だ． もしお 前たちがわたしの 見た 夢を 言い 當て， その 解釋をしてくれなければ， お 前たちの 體を 八つ 裂きにし， お 前たちの 家も 打ち 壞す．

- And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him.
- Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
- And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
- Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever: tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation.
- The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me: if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill.

- しかし， もしわたしの 見た 夢を 言い 當て， 正しく 解釋してくれれば， ほうびとして 贈り 物と 大いなる 名譽を 授けよう． だから， その 夢を 言い 當て， 解釋してみよ． 」
- 彼らは 繰り 返し 答えた． 「王樣， どうぞその 夢をお 聞かせください． 僕らはその 解釋をいたしましょう． 」
- 王は 言った． 「思ったとおりだ． わたしの 命令が 必ず 實行されることを 知っているので， 時間を 稼ごうとしているのだ．
- その 夢を 話して 聞かせることができなければ， お 前たちに 下される 判決は 今言ったとおりだ． だから， わたしの 前でうそをついたり， いいかげんなことを 述べ 立てたりして， わたしの 考えが 變わるまで 時を 稼ごうとしているにちがいない． さあ， 夢を 話してみよ． そうすれば， 解釋できるかどうかも 分かるだろう． 」
- 賢者たちは 王に 答えた． 「王樣のお 求めに 應じることのできる 者は， この 地上にはおりません． 大王や 支配者の 中のだれも， そのようなことを 占い 師， 祈¿師， 賢者に 求めたことはございません．

- But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and rewards and great honour: therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof.
- They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it.
- The king answered and said, I know of certainty that ye would gain the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.
- But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof.
- The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any magician, or astrologer, or Chaldean.

- 王樣のお 求めになることは 難しく， これに 應じることのできるのは， 人間と 住まいを 共になさらぬ 神¿だけでございましょう． 」
- 王は 激しく 怒り， 憤慨し， バビロン の 知者を 皆殺しにするよう 命令した．
- 知者を 處刑する 定めが 出されたので， 人¿は ダニエル とその 同僚をも 殺そうとして 探した．
- バビロン の 知者を 殺そうと 出て 來た 侍從長 アルヨク に ダニエル は 思慮深く 賢明に 應對し，
- この 王の 高官 アルヨク に 尋ねた． 「どうして 王樣はこのような 嚴しい 命令を 出されたのですか． 」 アルヨク は ダニエル に 事情を 說明した．

- And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
- For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
- And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain.
- Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, which was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:
- He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

- ダニエル は 王のもとに 行って， 願った． 「しばらくの 時をいただけますなら， 解釋いたします． 」
- ダニエル は 家に 歸り， 仲間の ハナンヤ ， ミシャエル ， アザルヤ に 事情を 說明した．
- そして， 他の バビロン の 賢者と 共に 殺されることのないよう， 天の 神に 憐れみを 願い， その 夢の 秘密を 求めて 祈った．
- すると， 夜の 幻によってその 秘密が ダニエル に 明かされた． ダニエル は 天の 神をたたえ，
- こう 祈った． 「神の 御名をたたえよ， 世¿とこしえに． 知惠と 力は 神のもの．

- Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would shew the king the interpretation.
- Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:
- That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
- Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
- Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

- 神は 時を 移し， 季節を 變え ／王を 退け， 王を 立て ／知者に 知惠を， 識者に 知識を 與えられる．
- 奧義と 秘義を 現し ／闇にひそむものを 知り ／光は 御もとに 宿る．
- わたしの 父祖の 神よ， 感謝と 贊美をささげます． 知惠と 力をわたしに 授け ／今， 願いをかなえ ／王の 望むことを 知らせてくださいました． 」
- それから， ダニエル は バビロン の 知者皆殺しの 命を 受けていた アルヨク のもとに 行って， こう 言った． 「バビロン の 知者を 殺さないでください． わたしを 王樣のもとに 連れて 行ってくだされば， 王樣に 解釋を 申し 上げます． 」
- そこで， アルヨク はおそるおそる ダニエル を 王のもとに 連れて 出て， こう 言った． 「ユダ の 捕囚の 中に， 一人の 男が 見つかりました． 王樣に 解釋を 申し 上げると 言っております． 」

- And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:
- He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.
- I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter.
- Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch, whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon: he went and said thus unto him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will shew unto the king the interpretation.
- Then Arioch brought in Daniel before the king in haste, and said thus unto him, I have found a man of the captives of Judah, that will make known unto the king the interpretation.

- 王は ベルテシャツァル の 名を 持つ ダニエル に 尋ねた． 「わたしの 見た 夢を 言い 當て， それを 解釋してくれると 言うのか． 」
- ダニエル は 王に 答えた． 「王樣がお 求めになっている 秘密の 說明は， 知者， 祈¿師， 占い 師， 星占い 師にはできません．
- だが， 秘密を 明かす 天の 神がおられ， この 神が 將來何事が 起こるのかを ネブカドネツァル 王に 知らせてくださったのです． 王樣の 夢， お 眠りになっていて 頭に 浮かんだ 幻を 申し 上げましょう．
- お 休みになって 先¿のことを 思いめぐらしておられた 王樣に， 神は 秘密を 明かし， 將來起こるべきことを 知らせようとなさったのです．
- その 秘密がわたしに 明かされたのは， 命あるものすべてにまさる 知惠がわたしにあるからではなく， ただ 王樣にその 解釋を 申し 上げ， 王樣が 心にある 思いをよく 理解なさるようお 助けするためだったのです．

- The king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation thereof?
- Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;
- But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these;
- As for thee, O king, thy thoughts came into thy mind upon thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth secrets maketh known to thee what shall come to pass.
- But as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart.

- 王樣， あなたは 一つの 像を 御覽になりました． それは 巨大で， 異常に 輝き， あなたの 前に 立ち， 見るも 恐ろしいものでした．
- それは 頭が 純金， 胸と 腕が 銀， 腹と 腿が 靑銅，
- すねが 鐵， 足は 一部が 鐵， 一部が 陶土でできていました．
- 見ておられると， 一つの 石が 人手によらずに 切り 出され， その 像の 鐵と 陶土の 足を 打ち ¿きました．
- 鐵も 陶土も， 靑銅も 銀も 金も 共に ¿け， 夏の 打穀場のもみ 殼のようになり， 風に 吹き 拂われ， 跡形もなくなりました． その 像を 打った 石は 大きな 山となり， 全地に 廣がったのです．

- Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible.
- This image's head was of fine gold, his breast and his arms of silver, his belly and his thighs of brass,
- His legs of iron, his feet part of iron and part of clay.
- Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
- Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.

- これが 王樣の 御覽になった 夢です． さて， その 解釋をいたしましょう．
- 王樣， あなたはすべての 王の 王です． 天の 神はあなたに， 國と 權威と 威力と 威光を 授け，
- 人間も 野の ¿も 空の 鳥も， どこに 住んでいようとみなあなたの 手にゆだね， このすべてを 治めさせられました． すなわち， あなたがその 金の 頭なのです．
- あなたのあとに 他の 國が 興りますが， これはあなたに 劣るもの． その 次に 興る 第三の 國は 靑銅で， 全地を 支配します．
- 第四の 國は 鐵のように 强い． 鐵はすべてを 打ち ¿きますが， あらゆるものを 破壞する 鐵のように， この 國は 破壞を 重ねます．

- This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king.
- Thou, O king, art a king of kings: for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
- And wheresoever the children of men dwell, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all. Thou art this head of gold.
- And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
- And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise.

- 足と 足指は 一部が 陶工の 用いる 陶土， 一部が 鐵であるのを 御覽になりましたが， そのようにこの 國は 分裂しています． 鐵が 柔らかい 陶土と 混じっているのを 御覽になったように， この 國には 鐵の 强さもあります．
- 足指は 一部が 鐵， 一部が 陶土です． すなわち， この 國には 强い 部分もあれば， もろい 部分もあるのです．
- また， 鐵が 柔らかい 陶土と 混じり 合っているのを 御覽になったように， 人¿は 婚姻によって 混じり 合います． しかし， 鐵が 陶土と 溶け 合うことがないように， ひとつになることはありません．
- この 王たちの 時代に， 天の 神は 一つの 國を 興されます． この 國は 永遠に 滅びることなく， その 主權は 他の 民の 手に 渡ることなく， すべての 國を 打ち 滅ぼし， 永遠に 續きます．
- 山から 人手によらず 切り 出された 石が， 鐵， 靑銅， 陶土， 銀， 金を 打つのを 御覽になりましたが， それによって， 偉大な 神は 引き 續き 起こることを 王樣にお 知らせになったのです． この 夢は 確かであり， 解釋もまちがいございません． 」

- And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters' clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.
- And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken.
- And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay.
- And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
- Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

- これを 聞いた ネブカドネツァル はひれ 伏して ダニエル を 拜し， 獻げ 物と 香を 彼に 供えさせた．
- 王は ダニエル に 言った． 「あなたがこの 秘密を 明かすことができたからには， あなたたちの 神はまことに 神¿の 神， すべての 王の 主， 秘密を 明かす 方にちがいない． 」
- 王は ダニエル を 高い 位につけ， 多くのすばらしい 贈り 物を 與え， バビロン 全州を 治めさせ， バビロン の 知者すべての 上に 長官として 立てた．
- ダニエル は 王に 願って， シャドラク ， メシャク ， アベド · ネゴ を バビロン 州の 行政官に 任命してもらった． ダニエル 自身は 王宮にとどまった．

- Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him.
- The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
- Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.
- Then Daniel requested of the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.
