창세기 32:1-33:20

 야곱은 형 에서와 화해하기 위해 사람들을 보냈지만, 그들로부터 에서가 큰 무리를 이끌고 온다는 보고를 받자 두려워 떨었다. 야곱은 모든 소유를 얍복 강 건너편으로 보내고 홀로 그곳에 남아 하나님의 사자와 날이 새도록 씨름하던 끝에 환도뼈가 부러졌다. 그러나 결국 하나님의 복을 받고 이름도 이스라엘로 불리게 되었다. 에서와 화해한 야곱은 세겜에 이르러 단을 쌓았다.
  
  하나님과 씨름하는 야곱(32:1-32:32)    
 
  1. さて ヤコブ が 旅を 續けていると， 神の 使いたちが 彼に 現われた．
  2. ヤコブ は 彼らを 見たとき， 「ここは 神の 陣營だ． 」と 言って， その 所の 名を マハナイム と 呼んだ．
  3. ヤコブ は セイル の 地， エドム の 野にいる 兄の エサウ に， 前もって 使者を 送った．
  4. そして 彼らに 命じてこう 言った． 「あなたがたは 私の 主人 エサウ にこう 傳えなさい． 『あなたのしもべ ヤコブ はこう 申しました． 私は ラバン のもとに 寄留し， 今までとどまっていました．
  5. 私は 牛， ろば， 羊， 男女の 奴隷を 持っています． それでご 主人にお 知らせして， あなたのご 好意を 得ようと 使いを 送ったのです． 』」
  1. Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
  2. When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!" So he named that place Mahanaim.
  3. Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
  4. He instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my master Esau: 'Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.
  5. I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and maidservants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favor in your eyes.' "
  1. 使者は ヤコブ のもとに 歸って 言った． 「私たちはあなたの 兄上 エサウ のもとに 行って 來ました． あの 方も， あなたを 迎えに 四百人を 引き 連れてやって 來られます． 」
  2. そこで ヤコブ は 非常に 恐れ， 心配した． それで 彼はいっしょにいる 人¿や， 羊や 牛やらくだを 二つの 宿營に 分けて，
  3. 「たとい エサウ が 來て， 一つの 宿營を 打っても， 殘りの 一つの 宿營はのがれられよう． 」と 言った．
  4. そうして ヤコブ は 言った． 「私の 父 アブラハム の 神， 私の 父 イサク の 神よ． かつて 私に『あなたの 生まれ 故鄕に 歸れ． わたしはあなたをしあわせにする． 』と 仰せられた 主よ．
  5. 私はあなたがしもべに 賜わったすべての 惠みとまことを 受けるに 足りない 者です． 私は 自分の 杖一本だけを 持って， この ヨルダン を 渡りましたが， 今は， 二つの 宿營を 持つようになったのです．
  1. When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."
  2. In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.
  3. He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."
  4. Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'
  5. I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups.
  1. どうか 私の 兄， エサウ の 手から 私を 救い 出してください． 彼が 來て， 私をはじめ 母や 子どもたちまでも 打ちはしないかと， 私は 彼を 恐れているのです．
  2. あなたはかつて『わたしは 必ずあなたをしあわせにし， あなたの 子孫を 多くて 數えきれない 海の 砂のようにする． 』と 仰せられました． 」
  3. その 夜をそこで 過ごしてから， 彼は 手もとの 物から 兄 エサウ への 贈り 物を 選んだ．
  4. すなわち 雌やぎ 二百頭， 雄やぎ 二十頭， 雌羊二百頭， 雄羊二十頭，
  5. 乳らくだ 三十頭とその 子， 雌牛四十頭， 雄牛十頭， 雌ろば 二十頭， 雄ろば 十頭．
  1. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.
  2. But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.' "
  3. He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:
  4. two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
  5. thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
  1. 彼は， 一群れずつをそれぞれしもべたちの 手に 渡し， しもべたちに 言った． 「私の 先に 進め． 群れと 群れとの 間には 距離をおけ． 」
  2. また 先頭の 者には 次のように 命じた． 「もし 私の 兄 エサウ があなたに 會い， 『あなたはだれのものか． どこへ 行くのか． あなたの 前のこれらのものはだれのものか． 』と 言って 尋ねたら，
  3. 『あなたのしもべ ヤコブ のものです． 私のご 主人 エサウ に 贈る 贈り 物です． 彼もまた， 私たちのうしろにおります． 』と 答えなければならない． 」
  4. 彼は 第二の 者にも， 第三の 者にも， また 群れ 群れについて 行くすべての 者にも 命じて 言った． 「あなたがたが エサウ に 出會ったときには， これと 同じことを 告げ，

  1. He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds."
  2. He instructed the one in the lead: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?'
  3. then you are to say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.' "
  4. He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: "You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.
  5. And be sure to say, 'Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.' " For he thought, "I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me."
  1. それで 贈り 物は 彼より 先を 通って 行き， 彼は 宿營地でその 夜を 過ごした．
  2. しかし， 彼はその 夜のうちに 起きて， ふたりの 妻と， ふたりの 女奴隷と， 十一人の 子どもたちを 連れて， ヤボク の 渡しを 渡った．

  1. So Jacob's gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.
  2. That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
  3. After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.
  4. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.
  5. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
  1. するとその 人は 言った． 「わたしを 去らせよ． 夜が 明けるから． 」しかし， ヤコブ は 答えた． 「私はあなたを 去らせません． 私を 祝福してくださらなければ． 」
  2. その 人は 言った． 「あなたの 名は 何というのか． 」彼は 答えた． 「ヤコブ です． 」
  3. その 人は 言った． 「あなたの 名は， もう ヤコブ とは 呼ばれない． イスラエル だ． あなたは 神と 戰い， 人と 戰って， 勝ったからだ． 」
  4. ヤコブ が， 「どうかあなたの 名を 敎えてください． 」と 尋ねると， その 人は， 「いったい， なぜ， あなたはわたしの 名を 尋ねるのか． 」と 言って， その 場で 彼を 祝福した．
  5. そこで ヤコブ は， その 所の 名を ペヌエル と 呼んだ． 「私は 顔と 顔とを 合わせて 神を 見たのに， 私のいのちは 救われた． 」という 意味である．
  1. Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
  2. The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered.
  3. Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."
  4. Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.
  5. So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."
  1. 彼が ペヌエル を 通り 過ぎたころ， 太陽は 彼の 上に 上ったが， 彼はそのもものためにびっこをひいていた．

  1. The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.
  2. Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.

  1. ヤコブ が 目を 上げて 見ると， 見よ， エサウ が 四百人の 者を 引き 連れてやって 來ていた． ヤコブ は 子どもたちをそれぞれ レア と ラケル とふたりの 女奴隷とに 分け，
  2. 女奴隷たちとその 子どもたちを 先頭に， レア とその 子どもたちをそのあとに， ラケル と ヨセフ を 最後に 置いた．
  3. ヤコブ 自身は， 彼らの 先に 立って 進んだ． 彼は， 兄に 近づくまで， 七回も 地に 伏しておじぎをした．
  4. エサウ は 彼を 迎えに 走って 來て， 彼をいだき， 首に 抱きついて 口づけし， ふたりは 泣いた．
  5. エサウ は 目を 上げ， 女たちや 子どもたちを 見て， 「この 人たちは， あなたの 何なのか． 」と 尋ねた． ヤコブ は， 「神があなたのしもべに 惠んでくださった 子どもたちです． 」と 答えた．
  1. Jacob looked up and there was Esau, coming with his four hundred men; so he divided the children among Leah, Rachel and the two maidservants.
  2. He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph in the rear.
  3. He himself went on ahead and bowed down to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.
  4. But Esau ran to meet Jacob and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him. And they wept.
  5. Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. "Who are these with you?" he asked. Jacob answered, "They are the children God has graciously given your servant."
  1. それから 女奴隷とその 子どもたちは 進み 出て， おじぎをした．
  2. 次に レア もその 子どもたちと 進み 出て， おじぎをした． 最後に， ヨセフ と ラケル が 進み 出て， ていねいにおじぎをした．

  5. ヤコブ は 答えた． 「いいえ． もしお 氣に 召したら， どうか 私の 手から 私の 贈り 物を 受け 取ってください． 私はあなたの 顔を， 神の 御顔を 見るように 見ています． あなたが 私を 快く 受け 入れてくださいましたから．
  1. Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down.
  2. Next, Leah and her children came and bowed down. Last of all came Joseph and Rachel, and they too bowed down.
  3. Esau asked, "What do you mean by all these droves I met?" "To find favor in your eyes, my lord," he said.
  4. But Esau said, "I already have plenty, my brother. Keep what you have for yourself."
  5. "No, please!" said Jacob. "If I have found favor in your eyes, accept this gift from me. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me favorably.
  1. どうか， 私が 持って 來たこの 祝いの 品を 受け 取ってください． 神が 私を 惠んでくださったので， 私はたくさん 持っていますから． 」 ヤコブ がしきりに 勸めたので， エサウ は 受け 取った．
  2. エサウ が， 「さあ， 旅を 續けて 行こう． 私はあなたのすぐ 前に 立って 行こう． 」と 言うと，
  3. ヤコブ は 彼に 言った． 「あなたもご 存じのように， 子どもたちは 弱く， 乳を 飮ませている 羊や 牛は 私が 世話をしています． 一日でも， ひどく 追い 立てると， この 群れは 全部， 死んでしまいます．
  4. あなたは， しもべよりずっと 先に 進んで 行ってください． 私は， 私の 前に 行く 家畜や 子どもたちの 步みに 合わせて， ゆっくり 旅を 續け， あなたのところ， セイル へまいります． 」

  1. Please accept the present that was brought to you, for God has been gracious to me and I have all I need." And because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted it.
  2. Then Esau said, "Let us be on our way; I'll accompany you."
  3. But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are tender and that I must care for the ewes and cows that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard just one day, all the animals will die.
  4. So let my lord go on ahead of his servant, while I move along slowly at the pace of the droves before me and that of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."
  5. Esau said, "Then let me leave some of my men with you." "But why do that?" Jacob asked. "Just let me find favor in the eyes of my lord."
  1. エサウ は， その 日， セイル へ 歸って 行った．
  2. ヤコブ は スコテ へ 移って 行き， そこで 自分のために 家を 建て， 家畜のためには 小屋を 作った． それゆえ， その 所の 名は スコテ と 呼ばれた．

  1. So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir.
  2. Jacob, however, went to Succoth, where he built a place for himself and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Succoth.
  3. After Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city.
  4. For a hundred pieces of silver, he bought from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem, the plot of ground where he pitched his tent.
  5. There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.
