- この 方は， 初めに 神とともにおられた．
- すべてのものは， この 方によって 造られた． 造られたもので， この 方によらずにできたものは 一つもない．
- この 方にいのちがあった． このいのちは 人の 光であった．
- 光はやみの 中に 輝いている． やみはこれに 打ち 勝たなかった．

- In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- He was with God in the beginning.
- Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
- In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
- The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

- 神から 遣わされた ヨハネ という 人が 現われた．
- この 人はあかしのために 來た． 光についてあかしするためであり， すべての 人が 彼によって 信じるためである．
- 彼は 光ではなかった． ただ 光についてあかしするために 來たのである．
- すべての 人を 照らすそのまことの 光が 世に 來ようとしていた．
- この 方はもとから 世におられ， 世はこの 方によって 造られたのに， 世はこの 方を 知らなかった．

- There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
- He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
- He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
- The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
- He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

- この 方はご 自分のくにに 來られたのに， ご 自分の 民は 受け 入れなかった．
- しかし， この 方を 受け 入れた 人¿， すなわち， その 名を 信じた 人¿には， 神の 子どもとされる 特權をお 與えになった．
- この 人¿は， 血によってではなく， 肉の 欲求や 人の 意欲によってでもなく， ただ， 神によって 生まれたのである．
- ことばは 人となって， 私たちの 間に 住まわれた． 私たちはこの 方の 榮光を 見た． 父のみもとから 來られたひとり 子としての 榮光である． この 方は 惠みとまことに 滿ちておられた．

- He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
- Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
- children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
- The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
- John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' "

- From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
- For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
- No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only,who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
- Now this was John's testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was.
- He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, "I am not the Christ."

- They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."
- Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
- John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.' "
- Now some Pharisees who had been sent
- questioned him, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

- ヨハネ は 答えて 言った． 「私は 水で バプテスマ を 授けているが， あなたがたの 中に， あなたがたの 知らない 方が 立っておられます．

- "I baptize with water," John replied, "but among you stands one you do not know.
- He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie."
- This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
