- 全會衆は 大聲をあげて 叫び， 民はその 夜， 泣き 明かした．
- イスラエル 人はみな， モ ― セ と アロン につぶやき， 全會衆は 彼らに 言った． 「私たちは エジプト の 地で 死んでいたらよかったのに． できれば， この 荒野で 死んだほうがましだ．
- なぜ 主は， 私たちをこの 地に 導いて 來て， 劍で 倒そうとされるのか． 私たちの 妻子は， さらわれてしまうのに． エジプト に 歸ったほうが， 私たちにとって 良くはないか． 」
- そして 互いに 言った． 「さあ， 私たちは， ひとりのかしらを 立てて エジプト に 歸ろう． 」
- そこで， モ ― セ と アロン は， イスラエル 人の 會衆の 全集會の 集まっている 前でひれ 伏した．

- And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night.
- And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness!
- And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?
- And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
- Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

- すると， その 地を 探って 來た 者のうち， ヌン の 子 ヨシュア と エフネ の 子 カレブ とは 自分たちの 着物を 引き 裂いて，
- イスラエル 人の 全會衆に 向かって 次のように 言った． 「私たちが 巡り 步いて 探った 地は， すばらしく 良い 地だった．
- もし， 私たちが 主の 御心にかなえば， 私たちをあの 地に 導き 入れ， それを 私たちに 下さるだろう． あの 地には， 乳と 蜜とが 流れている．
- ただ， 主にそむいてはならない． その 地の 人¿を 恐れてはならない． 彼らは 私たちのえじきとなるからだ． 彼らの 守りは， 彼らから 取り 去られている． しかし 主が 私たちとともにおられるのだ． 彼らを 恐れてはならない． 」
- しかし 全會衆は， 彼らを 石で 打ち 殺そうと 言い 出した． そのとき， 主の 榮光が 會見の 天幕からすべての イスラエル 人に 現われた．

- And Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of them that searched the land, rent their clothes:
- And they spake unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceeding good land.
- If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey.
- Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.
- But all the congregation bade stone them with stones. And the glory of the LORD appeared in the tabernacle of the congregation before all the children of Israel.

- 主は モ ― セ に 仰せられた． 「この 民はいつまでわたしを 侮るのか． わたしがこの 民の 間で 行なったすべてのしるしにもかかわらず， いつまでわたしを 信じないのか．
- わたしは 疫病で 彼らを 打って 滅ぼしてしまい， あなたを 彼らよりも 大いなる 强い 國民にしよう． 」
- モ ― セ は 主に 申し 上げた． 「エジプト は， あなたが 御力によって， 彼らのうちからこの 民を 導き 出されたことを 聞いて，

- そこでもし， あなたがこの 民をひとり 殘らず 殺すなら， あなたのうわさを 聞いた 異邦の 民は 次のように 言うでしょう．

- And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them?
- I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
- And Moses said unto the LORD, Then the Egyptians shall hear it, (for thou broughtest up this people in thy might from among them;)
- And they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land: for they have heard that thou LORD art among this people, that thou LORD art seen face to face, and that thy cloud standeth over them, and that thou goest before them, by day time in a pillar of a cloud, and in a pillar of fire by night.
- Now if thou shalt kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of thee will speak, saying,

- 『主はこの 民を， 彼らに 誓った 地に 導き 入れることができなかったので， 彼らを 荒野で 殺したのだ． 』
- どうか 今， わが 主の 大きな 力を 現わしてください． あなたは 次のように 約束されました．
- 『主は 怒るのにおそく， 惠み 豊かである． 咎とそむきを 赦すが， 罰すべき 者は 必ず 罰して， 父の 咎を 子に 報い， 三代， 四代に 及ぼす． 』と．
- あなたがこの 民を エジプト から 今に 至るまで 赦してくださったように， どうかこの 民の 咎をあなたの 大きな 惠みによって 赦してください． 」
- 主は 仰せられた． 「わたしはあなたのことばどおりに 赦そう．

- Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.
- And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my LORD be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
- The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
- Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
- And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

- しかしながら， わたしが 生きており， 主の 榮光が 全地に 滿ちている 以上，
- エジプト とこの 荒野で， わたしの 榮光とわたしの 行なったしるしを 見ながら， このように 十度もわたしを 試みて， わたしの 聲に 聞き 從わなかった 者たちは， みな，
- わたしが 彼らの 先祖たちに 誓った 地を 見ることがない． わたしを 侮った 者も， みなそれを 見ることがない．
- ただし， わたしのしもべ カレブ は， ほかの 者と 違った 心を 持っていて， わたしに 從い 通したので， わたしは 彼が 行って 來た 地に 彼を 導き 入れる． 彼の 子孫はその 地を 所有するようになる．

- But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD.
- Because all those men which have seen my glory, and my miracles, which I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tempted me now these ten times, and have not hearkened to my voice;
- Surely they shall not see the land which I sware unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that provoked me see it:
- But my servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land whereinto he went; and his seed shall possess it.
- (Now the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwelt in the valley.) Tomorrow turn you, and get you into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

- 主は モ ― セ と アロン に 告げて 仰せられた．
- 「いつまでこの 惡い 會衆は， わたしにつぶやいているのか． わたしは イスラエル 人が， わたしにつぶやいているつぶやきを， もう 聞いている．
- あなたは 彼らに 言え． これは 主の 御告げである． わたしは 生きている． わたしは 必ずあなたがたに， わたしの 耳に 告げたそのとおりをしよう．

- And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying,
- How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, which murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against me.
- Say unto them, As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you:
- Your carcases shall fall in this wilderness; and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward which have murmured against me.
- Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

- さらわれてしまうと， あなたがたが 言ったあなたがたの 子どもたちを， わたしは 導き 入れよう． 彼らはあなたがたが 拒んだ 地を 知るようになる．
- しかし， あなたがたは 死體となってこの 荒野に 倒れなければならない．
- あなたがたの 子どもたちは， この 荒野で 四十年の 間羊を 飼う 者となり， あなたがたが 死體となってこの 荒野で 倒れてしまうまで， あなたがたの 背信の 罪を 負わなければならない．

- But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised.
- But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness.
- And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.
- After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
- I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

- モ ― セ がかの 地を 探らせるために 遣わした 者で， 歸って 來て， その 地について 惡く 言いふらし， 全會衆を モ ― セ につぶやかせた 者たちも． 」
- こうして， その 地をひどく 惡く 言いふらした 者たちは， 主の 前に， 疫病で 死んだ．
- しかし， かの 地を 探りに 行った 者のうち， ヌン の 子 ヨシュア と， エフネ の 子 カレブ は 生き 殘った．
- モ ― セ がこれらのことばを， すべての イスラエル 人に 告げたとき， 民はひどく 悲しんだ．

- And the men, which Moses sent to search the land, who returned, and made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up a slander upon the land,
- Even those men that did bring up the evil report upon the land, died by the plague before the LORD.
- But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, which were of the men that went to search the land, lived still.
- And Moses told these sayings unto all the children of Israel: and the people mourned greatly.
- And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.

- すると モ ― セ は 言った． 「あなたがたはなぜ， 主の 命令にそむこうとしているのか． それは 成功しない．
- 上って 行ってはならない． 主はあなたがたのうちにおられないのだ． あなたがたが 敵に 打ち 負かされないように．
- そこには アマレク 人と カナン 人とがあなたがたの 前にいるから， あなたがたは 劍で 打ち 倒されよう． あなたがたが 主にそむいて 從わなかったのだから， 主はあなたがたとともにはおられない． 」
- それでも， 彼らはかまわずに 山地の 峰のほうに 登って 行った． しかし， 主の 契約の 箱と モ ― セ とは， 宿營の 中から 動かなかった．
- 山地に 住んでいた アマレク 人と カナン 人は， 下って 來て， 彼らを 打ち， ホルマ まで 彼らを 追い 散らした．

- And Moses said, Wherefore now do ye transgress the commandment of the LORD? but it shall not prosper.
- Go not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten before your enemies.
- For the Amalekites and the Canaanites are there before you, and ye shall fall by the sword: because ye are turned away from the LORD, therefore the LORD will not be with you.
- But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
- Then the Amalekites came down, and the Canaanites which dwelt in that hill, and smote them, and discomfited them, even unto Hormah.
