- 大祭司は， 「そのとおりか． 」と 尋ねた．
- そこで ステパノ は 言った． 「兄弟たち， 父たちよ． 聞いてください． 私たちの 父祖 アブラハム が， カラン に 住む 以前まだ メソポタミヤ にいたとき， 榮光の 神が 彼に 現われて，
- 『あなたの 土地とあなたの 親族を 離れ， わたしがあなたに 示す 地に 行け． 』と 言われました．
- そこで， アブラハム は カルデヤ 人の 地を 出て， カラン に 住みました． そして， 父の 死後， 神は 彼をそこから 今あなたがたの 住んでいるこの 地にお 移しになりましたが，
- ここでは， 足の 踏み 場となるだけのものさえも， 相續財産として 彼にお 與えになりませんでした． それでも， 子どももなかった 彼に 對して， この 地を 彼とその 子孫に 財産として 與えることを 約束されたのです．

- Then said the high priest, Are these things so?
- And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,
- And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
- Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
- And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

- また 神は 次のようなことを 話されました． 『彼の 子孫は 外國に 移り 住み， 四百年間， 奴隷にされ， 虐待される． 』
- そして， こう 言われました． 『彼らを 奴隷にする 國民は， わたしがさばく． その 後， 彼らはのがれ 出て， この 所で， わたしを 禮拜する． 』
- また 神は， アブラハム に 割禮の 契約をお 與えになりました． こうして， 彼に イサク が 生まれました． 彼は 八日目に イサク に 割禮を 施しました． それから， イサク に ヤコブ が 生まれ， ヤコブ に 十二人の 族長が 生まれました．
- 族長たちは ヨセフ をねたんで， 彼を エジプト に 賣りとばしました． しかし， 神は 彼とともにおられ，
- あらゆる 患難から 彼を 救い 出し， エジプト 王 パロ の 前で， 惠みと 知惠をお 與えになったので， パロ は 彼を エジプト と 王の 家全體を 治める 大臣に 任じました．

- And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.
- And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.
- And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.
- And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,
- And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

- ところが， エジプト と カナン との 全地にききんが 起こり， 大きな 災難が 襲って 來たので， 私たちの 先祖たちには， 食物がなくなりました．
- しかし， ヤコブ は エジプト に 穀物があると 聞いて， 初めに 私たちの 先祖たちを 遣わしました．
- 二回目のとき， ヨセフ は 兄弟たちに， 自分のことを 打ち 明け， ヨセフ の 家族のことが パロ に 明らかになりました．
- そこで， ヨセフ は 人をやって， 父 ヤコブ と 七十五人の 全親族を 呼び 寄せました．
- ヤコブ は エジプト に 下り， そこで 彼も 私たちの 先祖たちも 死にました．

- Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.
- But when Jacob heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.
- And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.
- Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.
- So Jacob went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

- そして シケム に 運ばれ， かねて アブラハム がいくらかの 金で シケム の ハモル の 子から 買っておいた 墓に 葬られました．
- 神が アブラハム にお 立てになった 約束の 時が 近づくにしたがって， 民は エジプト の 中にふえ 廣がり，
- ヨセフ のことを 知らない 別の 王が エジプト の 王位につくときまで 續きました．
- この 王は， 私たちの 同胞に 對して 策略を 巡らし， 私たちの 先祖を 苦しめて， 幼子を 捨てさせ， 生かしておけないようにしました．
- このようなときに， モ ― セ が 生まれたのです． 彼は 神の 目にかなった， かわいらしい 子で， 三か 月の 間， 父の 家で 育てられましたが，

- And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.
- But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
- Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.
- The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.
- In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

- ついに 捨てられたのを パロ の 娘が 拾い 上げ， 自分の 子として 育てたのです．
- モ ― セ は エジプト 人のあらゆる 學問を 敎え ¿まれ， ことばにもわざにも 力がありました．
- 四十歲になったころ， モ ― セ はその 兄弟である イスラエル 人を， 顧みる 心を 起こしました．
- そして， 同胞のひとりが 虐待されているのを 見て， その 人をかばい， エジプト 人を 打ち 倒して， 亂暴されているその 人の 仕返しをしました．
- 彼は， 自分の 手によって 神が 兄弟たちに 救いを 與えようとしておられることを， みなが 理解してくれるものと 思っていましたが， 彼らは 理解しませんでした．

- And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.
- And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.
- And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.
- And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:
- For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

- 翌日彼は， 兄弟たちが 爭っているところに 現われ， 和解させようとして， 『あなたがたは， 兄弟なのだ． それなのにどうしてお 互いに 傷つけ 合っているのか． 』と 言いました．
- すると， 隣人を 傷つけていた 者が， モ ― セ を 押しのけてこう 言いました． 『だれがあなたを， 私たちの 支配者や 裁判官にしたのか．
- きのう エジプト 人を 殺したように， 私も 殺す 氣か． 』
- このことばを 聞いた モ ― セ は， 逃げて ミデアン の 地に 身を 寄せ， そこで 男の 子ふたりをもうけました．
- 四十年たったとき， 御使いが， モ ― セ に， シナイ 山の 荒野で 柴の 燃える 炎の 中に 現われました．

- And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?
- But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
- Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?
- Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.
- And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

- その 光景を 見た モ ― セ は 驚いて， それをよく 見ようとして 近寄ったとき， 主の 御聲が 聞こえました．
- 『わたしはあなたの 先祖の 神， アブラハム ， イサク ， ヤコブ の 神である． 』そこで， モ ― セ は 震え 上がり， 見定める 勇氣もなくなりました．
- すると， 主は 彼にこう 言われたのです． 『あなたの 足のくつを 脫ぎなさい． あなたの 立っている 所は 聖なる 地である．
- わたしは， 確かに エジプト にいるわたしの 民の 苦難を 見， そのうめき 聲を 聞いたので， 彼らを 救い 出すために 下って 來た． さあ， 行きなさい． わたしはあなたを エジプト に 遣わそう． 』
- 『だれがあなたを 支配者や 裁判官にしたのか． 』と 言って 人¿が 拒んだこの モ ― セ を， 神は 柴の 中で 彼に 現われた 御使いの 手によって， 支配者また 解放者としてお 遣わしになったのです．

- When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,
- Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
- Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
- I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
- This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

- この 人が， 彼らを 導き 出し， エジプト の 地で， 紅海で， また 四十年間荒野で， 不思議なわざとしるしを 行ないました．

- He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
