- アルタシャスタ 王の 第二十年の ニサン の 月に， 王の 前に 酒が 出たとき， 私は 酒を 取り 上げ， それを 王に 差し 上げた． これまで， 私は 王の 前でしおれたことはなかった．
- そのとき， 王は 私に 言った． 「あなたは 病氣でもなさそうなのに， なぜ， そのように 悲しい 顔つきをしているのか． きっと 心に 悲しみがあるに 違いない． 」私はひどく 恐れて，
- 王に 言った． 「王よ． いつまでも 生きられますように． 私の 先祖の 墓のある 町が 廢墟となり， その 門が 火で 燒き 盡くされているというのに， どうして 悲しい 顔をしないでおられましょうか． 」
- すると， 王は 私に 言った． 「では， あなたは 何を 願うのか． 」そこで 私は， 天の 神に 祈ってから，
- 王に 答えた． 「王さま． もしもよろしくて， このしもべをいれてくださいますなら， 私を ユダ の 地， 私の 先祖の 墓のある 町へ 送って， それを 再建させてください． 」

- And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
- Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid,
- And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
- Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.
- And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it.

- 王は 私に 言った． ··王妃もそばにすわっていた． ··「旅はどのくらいかかるのか． いつ 戾って 來るのか． 」私が 王にその 期間を 申し 出ると， 王は 快く 私を 送り 出してくれた．
- それで， 私は 王に 言った． 「もしも， 王さまがよろしければ， 川向こうの 總督たちへの 手紙を 私に 賜わり， 私が ユダ に 着くまで， 彼らが 私を 通らせるようにしてください．
- また， 王に 屬する 御園の 番人 アサフ への 手紙も 賜わり， 宮の 城門の 梁を 置くため， また， あの 町の 城壁と， 私がはいる 家のために， 彼が 材木を 私に 與えるようにしてください． 」私の 神の 惠みの 御手が 私の 上にあったので， 王はそれをかなえてくれた．
- 私は， 川向こうの 總督たちのところに 行き， 王の 手紙を 彼らに 手渡した． それに， 王は 將校たちと 騎兵を 私につけてくれた．
- ホロン 人 サヌバラテ と， アモン 人で 役人の トビヤ は， これを 聞いて， 非常に 不きげんになった． イスラエル 人の 利益を 求める 人がやって 來たからである．

- And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.
- Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah;
- And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
- Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.
- When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

- こうして， 私は エルサレム にやって 來て， そこに 三日間とどまった．
- あるとき， 私は 夜中に 起きた． ほかに 數人の 者もいっしょにいた． しかし， 私の 神が， 私の 心を 動かして エルサレム のためにさせようとされることを， 私はだれにも 告げなかった． また， 私が 乘った ¿のほかには， 一頭の ¿も 連れて 行かなかった．
- 私は 夜， 谷の 門を 通って 龍の 泉のほう， 糞の 門のところに 出て 行き， エルサレム の 城壁を 調べると， それはくずされ， その 門は 火で 燒け 盡きていた．
- さらに， 私は 泉の 門と 王の 池のほうへ 進んで 行ったが， 私の 乘っている ¿の 通れる 所がなかった．
- そこで， 私は 夜のうちに 流れを 上って 行き， 城壁を 調べた． そしてまた 引き 返し， 谷の 門を 通って 戾って 來た．

- So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
- And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
- And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
- Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king's pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.
- Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.

- 代表者たちは， 私がどこへ 行っていたか， また 私が 何をしていたか 知らなかった． それに， 私は， それを ユダヤ 人にも， 祭司たちにも， おもだった 人たちにも， 代表者たちにも， その 他工事をする 者たちにも， まだ 知らせていなかった．
- それから， 私は 彼らに 言った． 「あなたがたは， 私たちの 當面している 困難を 見ている． エルサレム は 廢墟となり， その 門は 火で 燒き 拂われたままである． さあ， エルサレム の 城壁を 建て 直し， もうこれ 以上そしりを 受けないようにしよう． 」
- そして， 私に 惠みを 下さった 私の 神の 御手のことと， また， 王が 私に 話したことばを， 彼らに 告げた． そこで 彼らは， 「さあ， 再建に 取りかかろう． 」と 言って， この 良い 仕事に 着手した．
- ところが， ホロン 人 サヌバラテ と， アモン 人で 役人の トビヤ ， および， アラブ 人 ゲシェム は， これを 聞いて， 私たちをあざけり， 私たちをさげすんで 言った． 「おまえたちのしているこのことは 何だ． おまえたちは 王に 反逆しようとしているのか． 」
- そこで， 私は 彼らにことばを 返して 言った． 「天の 神ご 自身が， 私たちを 成功させてくださる． だから， そのしもべである 私たちは， 再建に 取りかかっているのだ． しかし， あなたがたには エルサレム の 中に 何の 分け 前も， 權利も， 記念もないのだ． 」

- And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
- Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
- Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
- But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king?
- Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
