- 兄弟たち． 人間のばあいにたとえてみましょう． 人間の 契約でも， いったん 結ばれたら， だれもそれを 無效にしたり， それにつけ 加えたりはしません．
- ところで， 約束は， アブラハム とそのひとりの 子孫に 告げられました． 神は「子孫たちに 」と 言って， 多數をさすことはせず， ひとりをさして， 「あなたの 子孫に 」と 言っておられます． その 方は キリスト です．
- 私の 言おうとすることはこうです． 先に 神によって 結ばれた 契約は， その 後四百三十年たってできた 律法によって 取り 消されたり， その 約束が 無效とされたりすることがないということです．
- なぜなら， 相續がもし 律法によるのなら， もはや 約束によるのではないからです． ところが， 神は 約束を 通して アブラハム に 相續の 惠みを 下さったのです．
- では， 律法とは 何でしょうか． それは 約束をお 受けになった， この 子孫が 來られるときまで， 違反を 示すためにつけ 加えられたもので， 御使いたちを 通して 仲介者の 手で 定められたのです．

- Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.
- Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed He does not say, "And to seeds," as referring to many, but rather to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.
- What I am saying is this: the Law, which came four hundred and thirty years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to nullify the promise.
- For if the inheritance is based on law, it is no longer based on a promise; but God has granted it to Abraham by means of a promise.
- Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made.

- 仲介者は 一方だけに 屬するものではありません． しかし 約束を 賜わる 神は 唯一者です．
- とすると， 律法は 神の 約束に 反するのでしょうか． 絶對にそんなことはありません． もしも， 與えられた 律法がいのちを 與えることのできるものであったなら， 義は 確かに 律法によるものだったでしょう．
- しかし 聖書は， 逆に， すべての 人を 罪の 下に 閉じ ¿めました． それは 約束が， イエス · キリスト に 對する 信仰によって， 信じる 人¿に 與えられるためです．
- 信仰が 現われる 以前には， 私たちは 律法の 監督の 下に 置かれ， 閉じ ¿められていましたが， それは， やがて 示される 信仰が 得られるためでした．
- こうして， 律法は 私たちを キリスト へ 導くための 私たちの 養育係となりました． 私たちが 信仰によって 義と 認められるためなのです．

- Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.
- Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.
- But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
- But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
- Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.

- しかし， 信仰が 現われた 以上， 私たちはもはや 養育係の 下にはいません．
- あなたがたはみな， キリスト · イエス に 對する 信仰によって， 神の 子どもです．
- バプテスマ を 受けて キリスト につく 者とされたあなたがたはみな， キリスト をその 身に 着たのです．
- ユダヤ 人も ギリシヤ 人もなく， 奴隷も 自由人もなく， 男子も 女子もありません． なぜなら， あなたがたはみな， キリスト · イエス にあって， 一つだからです．
- もしあなたがたが キリスト のものであれば， それによって アブラハム の 子孫であり， 約束による 相續人なのです．

- But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
- For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
- There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.
