- Now Abraham was old, advanced in age; and the LORD had blessed Abraham in every way.
- Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he owned, "Please place your hand under my thigh,
- and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live,
- but you will go to my country and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac."
- The servant said to him, "Suppose the woman is not willing to follow me to this land; should I take your son back to the land from where you came?"

- 아브라함은 이제 몹시 늙었다. 야훼께서는 매사에 아브라함에게 복을 내려주셨다.
- 아브라함은 집안 일을 도맡아 보는 늙은 심복에게 분부하였다. "너는 내 사타구니에 손을 넣고
- 하늘을 내신 하느님, 땅을 내신 하느님 야훼를 두고 맹세하여라. 내 며느릿감은 내가 살고 있는 이 곳 가나안 사람의 딸 가운데서 고르지 않을 것이며,
- 내 고향 내 친척들한테 가서 내 아들 이사악의 신붓감을 골라 오겠다고 하여라."
- 종이 물었다. "신부 될 사람이 저를 따라 이리로 오려고 하지 않으면, 아드님을 주인님의 옛 고향으로 데려가도 됩니까?"

- Then Abraham said to him, "Beware that you do not take my son back there!
- "The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, 'To your descendants I will give this land,' He will send His angel before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there.
- "But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this my oath; only do not take my son back there."
- So the servant placed his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.
- Then the servant took ten camels from the camels of his master, and set out with a variety of good things of his master's in his hand; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

- 아브라함이 대답하였다. "내 아들을 그 곳으로 데려가다니, 그건 안 될 말이다.
- 고향에서 친척들과 함께 사는 나를 그들 가운데서 이끌어내시고 이 땅을 내 후손에게 주겠다고 약속하신 하느님, 하늘을 내시고 땅을 내신 하느님 야훼께서 당신의 천사를 보내시어 거기에서 내 며느릿감을 데려오도록 네 앞길을 인도해 주실 것이다.
- 신붓감이 너를 따라오려고 하지 않으면, 너는 나에게 한 맹세에서 풀리게 된다. 다만 내 아들을 그리로 데려가지만은 말아라."
- 그 종은 주인 아브라함의 사타구니에 손을 넣고 시키는 대로 하겠다고 맹세하였다.
- 그 종은 주인이 보내는 온갖 귀한 선물을 낙타 열 마리에 싣고 길을 떠나 아람 나하라임에 이르러 나홀의 성을 찾아갔다.

- He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water.
- He said, "O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today, and show lovingkindness to my master Abraham.
- "Behold, I am standing by the spring, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water;
- now may it be that the girl to whom I say, 'Please let down your jar so that I may drink,' and who answers, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also'--may she be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown lovingkindness to my master."
- Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor, came out with her jar on her shoulder.

- 그는 성 밖에 있는 샘터에서 낙타를 쉬게 하고 있었다. 마침 저녁때여서 여자들이 물을 길으러 나올 무렵이었다.
- 그 종은 이렇게 기도하였다. "제 주인 아브라함의 하느님 야훼여! 오늘 일이 모두 뜻대로 잘되게 해주십시오. 하느님의 심복 아브라함에게 신의를 지켜주십시오.
- 저는 지금 이 샘터에 서 있습니다. 저 성에 사는 여자들이 물을 길으러 나오면
- 저는 그들에게 항아리를 내려 물을 마시게 해달라고 하겠습니다. 그들 가운데서 저에게 물을 마시게 해줄 뿐 아니라, 제 낙타에게도 물을 마시게 해주겠다고 나서는 아가씨가 있으면 그가 바로 하느님의 심복 이사악의 아내감으로 정해 주신 여자라고 알겠습니다. 이로써 하느님께서 제 주인에게 신의를 지키시는 줄 제가 알겠습니다."
- 이 말이 채 끝나기도 전에 리브가가 어깨에 항아리를 메고 나왔다. 리브가는 밀가의 아들 브두엘의 딸이었다. 그런데 밀가로 말하면 나홀의 아내이므로 아브라함에게는 제수뻘이었다.

- The girl was very beautiful, a virgin, and no man had had relations with her; and she went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up.
- Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, "Please let me drink a little water from your jar."
- She said, "Drink, my lord"; and she quickly lowered her jar to her hand, and gave him a drink.
- Now when she had finished giving him a drink, she said, "I will draw also for your camels until they have finished drinking."
- So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, and ran back to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels.

- 그 아가씨는 아직 남자를 모르는 아주 예쁜 처녀였다. 그가 샘터에 내려와서 항아리에 물을 채워가지고 올라오는데
- 아브라함의 종이 뛰어나가 그를 반기며 항아리의 물을 좀 마시게 해달라고 청했다.
- 리브가는 "할아버지, 어서 물을 마시십시오." 하며 항아리를 내려 손에 받쳐들고 마시게 해주었다.
- 이렇게 물을 마시게 해주고 나서 낙타들에게도 실컷 마시게 물을 길어주겠다고 하였다.
- 그리고 병에 남아 있는 물을 얼른 구유에 붓고는 물을 길으러 샘터로 달려가서 낙타들도 모두 마시게 물을 길어다 주었다.

- Meanwhile, the man was gazing at her in silence, to know whether the LORD had made his journey successful or not.
- When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half-shekel and two bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels in gold,
- and said, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room for us to lodge in your father's house?"
- She said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor."
- Again she said to him, "We have plenty of both straw and feed, and room to lodge in."

- 그러는 동안, 그는 자기가 띠고 온 사명을 야훼께서 뜻대로 이루어주시려는지 알아보려고 리브가를 지켜보고 있었다.
- 이윽고 낙타들이 물을 다 마시고 나자, 그는 반 세겔 나가는 금코고리를 아가씨에게 걸어주고 다시 십 세겔 나가는 금팔찌 두 개를 팔목에 끼워주고는,
- 리브가에게 물었다. "아가씨는 뉘 댁 따님이시오? 아가씨의 아버지 집에는 하룻밤 쉬어갈 만한 방이 없겠소?"
- 리브가는, "저는 브두엘이라는 분의 딸입니다. 할아버지는 나홀이고 할머니는 밀가라고 합니다." 하고 대답하고 나서
- 이렇게 말하였다. "저의 집에는 겨와 여물도 넉넉하고 쉬어가실 만한 방도 있습니다."

- Then the man bowed low and worshiped the LORD.
- He said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth toward my master; as for me, the LORD has guided me in the way to the house of my master's brothers."
- Then the girl ran and told her mother's household about these things.
- Now Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran outside to the man at the spring.
- When he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister's wrists, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, "This is what the man said to me," he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.

- 그는 야훼께 엎드려 경배하고는
- "내 주인의 하느님 야훼, 찬양을 받으실 분이어라. 야훼께서는 내 주인을 버리지 않으시고, 참으로 신의를 지키셨구나. 야훼께서 이렇게 나를 주인의 친척 집에까지 인도해 주셨구나." 하며 찬양하였다.
- 아가씨는 뛰어가서 어머니 집 식구들에게 이 일을 알렸다.
- 그런데 리브가에게는 라반이라는 오라버니가 있었다. 라반이 그를 맞으러 우물로 뛰어나왔다.
- 라반은 코고리와 누이 동생 팔에 끼어져 있는 팔찌를 보고, 또 리브가가 하는 말을 듣고 달려 나온 것이다. 나와보니 그는 아직도 낙타와 함께 샘터에 서 있었다.

- And he said, "Come in, blessed of the LORD! Why do you stand outside since I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels?"
- So the man entered the house. Then Laban unloaded the camels, and he gave straw and feed to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.
- But when food was set before him to eat, he said, "I will not eat until I have told my business." And he said, "Speak on."
- So he said, "I am Abraham's servant.
- "The LORD has greatly blessed my master, so that he has become rich; and He has given him flocks and herds, and silver and gold, and servants and maids, and camels and donkeys.

- 라반이 권하였다. "야훼께 복받은 노인장, 어서 들어가십시다. 왜 이렇게 밖에 서 계십니까? 방도 치워놓았고 낙타 우리도 마련해 놓았습니다."
- 라반은 그를 집으로 모신 다음 낙타 등에 실은 짐과 안장을 풀어 내리고 낙타에게 겨와 여물을 주고 일행의 발을 씻을 물을 떠 왔다.
- 그리고 밥상을 차려 내놓았다. 그러나 아브라함의 종은 자기는 심부름 온 사람이라는 것을 밝히고 그 일을 아뢰기 전에는 수저를 들 수 없다고 하였다. 라반이 어서 말하라고 하자
- 그는 입을 열어 말하였다. "제 주인은 아브라함이라고 합니다.
- 제 주인은 야훼께 복을 많이 받아 굉장한 부자가 되었습니다. 그는 양떼와 소떼, 금과 은, 남종과 여종, 낙타와 나귀를 야훼께 많이 받았습니다.

- "Now Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master in her old age, and he has given him all that he has.
- "My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live;
- but you shall go to my father's house and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son.'
- "I said to my master, 'Suppose the woman does not follow me.'
- "He said to me, 'The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you to make your journey successful, and you will take a wife for my son from my relatives and from my father's house;

- 안주인 사라는 늘그막에 주인에게 아들을 낳아드렸는데 주인은 그의 전 재산을 그 아들에게 주었습니다.
- 그런데 제 주인은 저에게 맹세하라고 하시면서 이렇게 당부하셨습니다. '나는 내가 살고 있는 이 곳 가나안 사람의 딸들 가운데서는 며느릿감을 고르지 않겠다.
- 그러니 너는 내 아버지의 가문, 내 일가를 찾아가서 며느릿감을 골라 오너라.'
- 제가 주인에게 '만일 신붓감이 저를 따라오려고 하지 않으면 어떻게 할까요?' 하고 여쭈었더니
- 주인은 저에게 이렇게 일러주셨습니다. '내가 섬겨온 야훼께서 당신의 천사를 딸려 보내시어 네가 가서 하려는 일을 뜻대로 이루어주실 것이다. 너는 내 아버지의 가문, 내 일가 가운데서 며느릿감을 골라 올 수 있을 것이다.

- then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my relatives; and if they do not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.'
- "So I came today to the spring, and said, 'O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, if now You will make my journey on which I go successful;
- behold, I am standing by the spring, and may it be that the maiden who comes out to draw, and to whom I say, "Please let me drink a little water from your jar";
- and she will say to me, "You drink, and I will draw for your camels also"; let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.'
- "Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder, and went down to the spring and drew, and I said to her, 'Please let me drink.'

- 그러니 너는 내 일가들한테로 가기만 하면 네 책임을 다하는 것이다. 내 일가들이 며느릿감을 내주지 않아도 너는 책임이 없다.'
- 저는 오늘 그 샘터에 이르러 기도했습니다. '제 주인 아브라함의 하느님! 제가 띠고 온 사명을 뜻대로 이루어주시려거든 이렇게 해주십시오.
- 지금 제가 샘터에 서 있는데, 혼기가 찬 여자가 물을 길으러 나오면, 항아리에서 물을 한 모금 마시게 해달라고 말을 걸어보겠습니다.
- 만일 저에게 물을 마시게 해줄 뿐만 아니라, 제 낙타에게도 물을 길어주겠다고 나서는 여자가 있으면, 그 여자가 바로 제 주인의 며느릿감으로 야훼께서 정해 주신 여자인 줄 알겠습니다.'
- 제가 이렇게 기도를 마치기도 전에 리브가가 항아리를 어깨에 메고 나와 물을 길으러 샘터로 내려오는 것이 아니겠습니까? 그래서 저는 리브가에게 물 한 모금만 달라고 했습니다.

- "She quickly lowered her jar from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also'; so I drank, and she watered the camels also.
- "Then I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter are you?' And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him'; and I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.
- "And I bowed low and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had guided me in the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son.
- "So now if you are going to deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, let me know, that I may turn to the right hand or the left."
- Then Laban and Bethuel replied, "The matter comes from the LORD; so we cannot speak to you bad or good.

- 그랬더니 리브가는 어깨에서 얼른 항아리를 내려놓으며 마시라고 하면서 나의 낙타들에게도 물을 길어주겠다고 하였습니다. 그래서 저는 물을 마셨습니다. 리브가는 낙타들에게도 물을 길어주었습니다.
- 저는 리브가에게 뉘 댁 따님이냐고 물었습니다. 그랬더니 브두엘의 딸이요 나홀과 밀가의 손녀라는 것이었습니다. 저는 그의 코에 코걸이를 걸어주고 두 팔목에 팔찌를 끼워주고 나서
- 야훼께 엎드려 경배하고 제 주인 아브라함의 하느님을 찬양하였습니다. 그분은 저를 이렇게 바로 인도해 주시어 주인님의 조카딸을 주인댁 아드님의 아내감으로 찾아내게 하셨습니다.
- 그러니 이제 제 주인에게 참 호의를 베풀어주시려거든 그렇다고 말씀해 주십시오. 아니면 그렇지 않다고 말씀해 주십시오. 그래야 저도 제 갈 길을 찾겠습니다."
- 그러자 라반과 브두엘이 "이 일은 야훼께서 하시는 일인데 우리가 어찌 좋다 싫다 하겠습니까?" 하며 승낙하였다.

- "Here is Rebekah before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has spoken."
- When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the ground before the LORD.
- The servant brought out articles of silver and articles of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave precious things to her brother and to her mother.
- Then he and the men who were with him ate and drank and spent the night. When they arose in the morning, he said, "Send me away to my master."
- But her brother and her mother said, "Let the girl stay with us a few days, say ten; afterward she may go."

- 리브가가 여기 있으니 데리고 가십시오. 야훼께서 말씀하신 대로 당신 주인의 며느리로 삼으십시오."
- 아브라함의 종은 그 말을 듣고 땅에 엎드려 야훼께 경배하고
- 금은 패물과 옷가지들을 리브가에게 건네고 그의 오라버니와 어머니에게도 선물을 주었다.
- 그와 그의 일행은 융숭한 대접을 받고 하룻밤 편히 쉬었다. 이튿날 아침, 모두 일어났을 때 아브라함의 종이 주인에게 돌아가야 하겠다고 하자,
- 리브가의 오라버니와 어머니가 만류하고 나섰다. "좀 더 집에 두었다가 데려가십시오. 열흘 만이라도 두었다가 데려가십시오."

- He said to them, "Do not delay me, since the LORD has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master."
- And they said, "We will call the girl and consult her wishes."
- Then they called Rebekah and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" And she said, "I will go."
- Thus they sent away their sister Rebekah and her nurse with Abraham's servant and his men.
- They blessed Rebekah and said to her, "May you, our sister, Become thousands of ten thousands, And may your descendants possess The gate of those who hate them."

- 그러나 아브라함의 종은 "붙잡지 마십시오. 제가 여기에 찾아온 목적을 야훼께서 이렇게 뜻대로 이루어주셨으니, 주인에게 돌아가야 하겠습니다. 떠나게 해주십시오." 하고 듣지 않았다.
- 그들이 말하였다. "그러시다면 그 애를 불러서 물어봅시다."
- 그들은 리브가를 불러서 "이 어른과 같이 갈 마음이 있느냐?" 하고 물어보았다. 리브가가 대답하였다. "예, 가겠습니다."
- 그러자 그들은 누이 동생 리브가와 그의 유모를 아브라함의 종과 그의 일행에 딸려 보내며
- 리브가에게 복을 빌어주었다. "누이야, 너는 억조 창생의 어머니가 되어라. 네 후손은 원수들의 성문을 부수고 그 성을 빼앗아라."

- Then Rebekah arose with her maids, and they mounted the camels and followed the man. So the servant took Rebekah and departed.
- Now Isaac had come from going to Beer-lahai-roi; for he was living in the Negev.
- Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, camels were coming.
- Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac she dismounted from the camel.
- She said to the servant, "Who is that man walking in the field to meet us?" And the servant said, "He is my master." Then she took her veil and covered herself.

- 리브가는 몸종들과 함께 낙타를 타고 그 사람을 따라 나섰다. 이리하여 그 종은 리브가를 데리고 길을 떠나게 되었다.
- 그 때 이사악은 라하이 로이라는 샘이 있는 사막 지방에 와서 살고 있었다. 그 곳은 네겝 땅이었다.
- 저녁때가 되어 이사악은 들에 바람쐬러 나왔다가 고개를 들어 낙타떼가 가까이 오고 있는 것을 보았다.
- 리브가도 고개를 들어 이사악을 보고 낙타에서 내려
- 아브라함의 종에게 물었다. "들을 가로질러 우리 쪽으로 오시는 저분은 누구입니까?" 종이 대답하였다. "제 주인입니다." 리브가는 종의 말을 듣고 너울을 꺼내어 얼굴을 가렸다.

- The servant told Isaac all the things that he had done.
- Then Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and he took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her; thus Isaac was comforted after his mother's death.

- 아브라함의 종은 그 동안의 경위를 낱낱이 이사악에게 보고하였다.
- 이사악은 리브가를 천막으로 맞아들여 아내로 삼았다. 이사악은 아내를 사랑하며 어머니 잃은 슬픔을 달랬다.
