창세기 32:1-33:20

 야곱은 형 에서와 화해하기 위해 사람들을 보냈지만, 그들로부터 에서가 큰 무리를 이끌고 온다는 보고를 받자 두려워 떨었다. 야곱은 모든 소유를 얍복 강 건너편으로 보내고 홀로 그곳에 남아 하나님의 사자와 날이 새도록 씨름하던 끝에 환도뼈가 부러졌다. 그러나 결국 하나님의 복을 받고 이름도 이스라엘로 불리게 되었다. 에서와 화해한 야곱은 세겜에 이르러 단을 쌓았다.
  
  하나님과 씨름하는 야곱(32:1-32:32)    
 
  1. Now as Jacob went on his way, the angels of God met him.
  2. Jacob said when he saw them, "This is God's camp." So he named that place Mahanaim.
  3. Then Jacob sent messengers before him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
  4. He also commanded them saying, "Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: 'Thus says your servant Jacob, "I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;
  5. I have oxen and donkeys and flocks and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight."'"
  1. 이튿날 아침 라반은 일찍이 일어나 손자들과 딸들에게 입을 맞추고 복을 빌어준 다음 길을 떠나 제 고장으로 돌아갔다.
  2. 야곱도 길을 떠났다. 그는 도중에 하느님의 사역꾼들과 마주쳤다.
  3. 야곱은 그들을 보고 "이 곳이 하느님의 진지구나." 하면서 그 곳을 마하나임이라 하였다.
  4. 야곱은 에돔 벌 세일 지방에 있는 형 에사오에게 머슴들을 앞서 보내면서
  5. 형 에사오에게 다음과 같이 전하라고 시켰다. "이 못난 아우 야곱이 문안드립니다. 그간 라반에게 몸붙여 살다가 보니 이렇게 늦었습니다.
  1. The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and furthermore he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."
  2. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people who were with him, and the flocks and the herds and the camels, into two companies;
  3. for he said, "If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the company which is left will escape."
  4. Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD, who said to me, 'Return to your country and to your relatives, and I will prosper you,'
  5. I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant; for with my staff only I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies.
  1. 지금 저는 황소와 나귀와 양떼가 생겼고 남종과 여종까지 거느리게 되었습니다. 이렇게 형님께 소식을 전해 드립니다. 아무쪼록 너그럽게 보아주십시오."
  2. 머슴들이 다녀와서 야곱에게 고하였다. "주인님의 형님 에사오께 다녀왔습니다. 에사오께서는 지금 사백 명 부하를 거느리고 주인님을 만나러 오십니다."
  3. 야곱은 덜컥 겁이 나고 걱정이 되어 일행과 양떼와 소떼와 낙타떼를 두 패로 나누었다.
  4. 에사오가 한 패에 달려들어 쳐죽이면 나머지 한 패라도 피하게 해야겠다는 속셈이었다.
  5. 그리고 나서 야곱은 기도를 드렸다. "할아버지 아브라함의 하느님, 아버지 이사악의 하느님! 저에게 고향 친척에게로 돌아가면 앞길을 열어주겠다고 약속하신 야훼여!
  1. "Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children.
  2. "For You said, 'I will surely prosper you and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which is too great to be numbered.'"
  3. So he spent the night there. Then he selected from what he had with him a present for his brother Esau:
  4. two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
  5. thirty milking camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.
  1. 당신께서 이 종에게 베푸신 한결같으신 사랑을 저는 받을 자격이 없습니다. 이 강을 건널 때 제가 가진 것이라곤 지팡이 하나밖에 없었습니다. 그런데 이제 저는 이렇게 두 무리를 이루었습니다.
  2. 저를 형 에사오의 손에서 건져주십시오. 에사오가 와서 어미들과 자식들까지 우리 모두를 죽여버리지나 않을까 두렵습니다.
  3. 당신께서는 '네 앞길을 정녕 열어주고 네 자손이 바닷가 모래처럼 셀 수 없이 불어나게 해주마.' 하시지 않으셨습니까?"
  4. 그 날 밤 그는 거기에서 묵으며 자기 소유 가운데서 형 에사오에게 선물로 보낼 것을 골라내었다.
  5. 암염소 이백 마리, 숫염소 스무 마리, 암양 이백 마리, 숫양 스무 마리,
  1. He delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass on before me, and put a space between droves."
  2. He commanded the one in front, saying, "When my brother Esau meets you and asks you, saying, 'To whom do you belong, and where are you going, and to whom do these animals in front of you belong?'
  3. then you shall say, 'These belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau. And behold, he also is behind us.'"
  4. Then he commanded also the second and the third, and all those who followed the droves, saying, "After this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him;
  5. and you shall say, 'Behold, your servant Jacob also is behind us.'" For he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me. Then afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me."
  1. 젖을 빨리는 낙타 서른 마리와 딸린 새끼들, 암소 마흔 마리, 황소 열 마리, 암나귀 스무 마리, 수나귀 열 마리.
  2. 야곱은 이것들을 따로 한 떼씩 떼어 종들의 손에 맡기며, 앞서가되 떼와 떼 사이에 거리를 두라고 일렀다.
  3. 야곱은 앞장 설 종에게 이렇게 지시하였다. "내 형 에사오가 너를 만나 '너는 누구의 종이냐? 어디로 가는 중이냐? 네가 몰고 가는 이것들은 누구의 것이냐?' 하고 묻거든
  4. 이렇게 대답하여라. '이것들은 당신의 종 야곱의 것입니다. 형님 에사오께 드리는 선물입니다. 야곱은 뒤에 오십니다.'"
  5. 야곱은 둘째, 셋째, 그리고 나머지 떼를 몰고 가는 자들에게도 에사오를 만나면 꼭 같은 말을 하도록 일렀다.
  1. So the present passed on before him, while he himself spent that night in the camp.
  2. Now he arose that same night and took his two wives and his two maids and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.
  3. He took them and sent them across the stream. And he sent across whatever he had.
  4. Then Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him until daybreak.
  5. When he saw that he had not prevailed against him, he touched the socket of his thigh; so the socket of Jacob's thigh was dislocated while he wrestled with him.
  1. 특히 "당신의 종 야곱은 뒤에 오십니다." 하고 말하는 것을 잊지 말라고 일렀다. 선물을 먼저 보내어 에사오의 마음이 풀어진 다음에 만나면 행여 자기를 반겨주지 않을까 하는 생각에서였다.
  2. 그래서 야곱은 선물을 먼저 보냈던 것이다. 그리고 그는 그 날 밤을 천막에서 묵었다.
  3. 바로 그 날 밤, 그는 일어나 두 아내와 두 여종과 열한 아들을 데리고 야뽁 나루를 건넜다.
  4. 그들을 데리고 개울을 건넌 다음 자기에게 딸린 모든 것도 건네 보냈다.
  5. 그리고 야곱은 혼자 뒤떨어져 있었다. 그런데 어떤 분이 나타나 동이 트기까지 그와 씨름을 했다.
  1. Then he said, "Let me go, for the dawn is breaking." But he said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
  2. So he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob."
  3. He said, "Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed."
  4. Then Jacob asked him and said, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there.
  5. So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved."
  1. 그분은 야곱을 이겨낼 수 없으리라는 것을 알고 야곱의 엉덩이뼈를 쳤다. 야곱은 그와 씨름을 하다가 환도뼈를 다치게 되었다.
  2. 그분은 동이 밝아오니 이제 그만 놓으라고 했지만 야곱은 자기에게 복을 빌어주지 않으면 놓아드릴 수 없다고 떼를 썼다.
  3. 일이 이쯤 되자 그분이 야곱에게 물었다. "네 이름이 무엇이냐?" "제 이름은 야곱입니다."
  4. "너는 하느님과 겨루어냈고 사람과도 겨루어 이긴 사람이다. 그러니 다시는 너를 야곱이라 하지 말고 이스라엘이라 하여라." 이 말을 듣고
  5. 야곱이 말했다. "당신의 이름이 무엇인지 가르쳐주십시오." 그분은 "내 이름은 무엇 때문에 물어보느냐?" 하고는, 야곱에게 복을 빌어주었다.
  1. Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.
  2. Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.
  1. 야곱은 "내가 여기서 하느님을 대면하고도 목숨을 건졌구나." 하면서 그 곳 이름을 브니엘이라 불렀다.
  2. 그가 다친 다리를 절뚝거리며 브니엘을 떠날 때 해가 떠올랐다.
 
  에서와의 화해(33:1-33:20)    
 
  1. Then Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids.
  2. He put the maids and their children in front, and Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last.
  3. But he himself passed on ahead of them and bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
  4. Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
  5. He lifted his eyes and saw the women and the children, and said, "Who are these with you?" So he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant."
  1. 야곱이 고개를 들어 보니 마침 에사오가 사백 명 부하를 거느리고 오고 있었다. 그는 레아와 라헬과 두 여종에게 자녀들을 나누어 맡긴 다음,
  2. 두 여종과 그들에게서 난 자녀를 앞에 세우고 레아와 그에게서 난 자녀를 다음에, 그리고 라헬과 요셉을 맨 뒤에서 따라오게 하였다.
  3. 그리고 야곱은 앞장서서 걸어가다가 일곱 번 땅에 엎드려 절하면서 형에게로 나갔다.
  4. 에사오는 마주 뛰어와서 야곱의 목을 끌어안고 입을 맞추며 울음을 터뜨렸다.
  5. 그리고 여자들과 아이들을 쳐다보며 물었다. "이들은 너와 어찌 되는 사람들이냐?" 야곱이 "이것들은 하느님께서 과분하게도 이 못난 당신의 종에게 주신 자식들입니다." 하고 대답하는데
  1. Then the maids came near with their children, and they bowed down.
  2. Leah likewise came near with her children, and they bowed down; and afterward Joseph came near with Rachel, and they bowed down.
  3. And he said, "What do you mean by all this company which I have met?" And he said, "To find favor in the sight of my lord."
  4. But Esau said, "I have plenty, my brother; let what you have be your own."
  5. Jacob said, "No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then take my present from my hand, for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably.
  1. 두 여종과 그들에게서 난 자식들이 앞으로 나와서 엎드려 절했다.
  2. 또 레아와 그의 자식들도 앞으로 나와서 절하고 요셉과 라헬까지 나와서 엎드려 절했다.
  3. 에사오가 물었다. "내가 오다가 만난 가축떼들은 웬 것들이냐?" 그가 대답하였다. "형님께서 저를 너그럽게 보아주시기를 바라는 마음으로 드리는 것입니다."
  4. 에사오는 "야곱아! 내 살림도 넉넉하다. 네 것은 네가 가져라." 하고 굳이 사양했지만,
  5. 야곱은 야곱대로 받아달라고 사정하였다. "그런 말씀은 마십시오. 저를 아우로 여기시거든 제 선물을 받아주십시오. 형님이 저를 이렇듯이 사랑으로 맞아주시니 형님 얼굴을 쳐다보는 것이 마치 하느님을 뵙는 것 같습니다.
  1. "Please take my gift which has been brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me and because I have plenty." Thus he urged him and he took it.
  2. Then Esau said, "Let us take our journey and go, and I will go before you."
  3. But he said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail and that the flocks and herds which are nursing are a care to me. And if they are driven hard one day, all the flocks will die.
  4. "Please let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will proceed at my leisure, according to the pace of the cattle that are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord at Seir."
  5. Esau said, "Please let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord."
  1. 하느님께서 저를 잘 돌보아 주셔서 제 살림은 이렇게 넉넉하답니다. 그러니 제가 드리는 선물을 받아주셔야 하겠습니다." 이윽고 에사오는 마지못해 받으며
  2. 말하였다. "이러고 있을 것이 아니다. 어서 가자. 내가 앞장 서마."
  3. 그러나 야곱은 "형님도 보시다시피 저에게는 약한 어린것들이 있습니다." 하며 말하였다. "그뿐입니까? 새끼 딸린 양, 새끼 딸린 소들도 있습니다. 이것들은 모두 제 손만 쳐다보고 있습니다. 하루만 몰아쳐도 다 죽습니다.
  4. 그러니 형님께서는 먼저 떠나가십시오. 저는 이 가축떼와 아장거리는 어린것들을 앞세우고 천천히 형님이 계시는 세일로 뒤따라 가겠습니다."
  5. 에사오가 "그러면 내 부하 몇을 남겨두고 갈까?" 하고 말했으나 야곱은 기어이 사양했다. "고맙기 그지없지만 그렇게까지 하실 것은 없습니다."
  1. So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.
  2. Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built for himself a house and made booths for his livestock; therefore the place is named Succoth.
  3. Now Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan-aram, and camped before the city.
  4. He bought the piece of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money.
  5. Then he erected there an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
  1. 그 날 에사오는 길을 떠나 세일로 돌아갔고
  2. 야곱은 수꼿으로 가 그 곳에 집을 짓고 가축떼가 쉴 우리도 여러 개 세웠다. 그래서 그 곳 이름을 수꼿이라 부르게 된 것이다.
  3. 야곱은 바딴아람을 떠나 마침내 가나안 땅 세겜 마을에 무사히 이르러 그 앞에 천막을 쳤다.
  4. 야곱은 자기가 천막 친 땅을 세겜의 아버지 하몰의 아들들에게서 은 백 냥을 주고 샀다.
  5. 그리고 거기에 제단을 쌓고 그 제단을 '이스라엘의 하느님 엘'이라 불렀다.
