사사기 9:1-9:57

 기드온의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜 사람들을 동원하여 스스로 왕이 된 후 자기 형제 70명을 학살했다. 이 때 유일하게 목숨을 건진 요담은 세겜 사람들에게 나무의 우화를 들어 하나님께서 심판하실 것을 경고했다. 요담의 저주는 실현되어 아비멜렉은 자신을 배반한 세겜 사람들을 학살했고 자신도 여인이 던진 맷돌에 맞아 죽고 말았다.
  
  아비멜렉의 패역(9:1-9:57)    
 
  1. And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's relatives, and spoke to them and to the whole clan of the household of his mother's father, saying,
  2. "Speak, now, in the hearing of all the leaders of Shechem, 'Which is better for you, that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?' Also, remember that I am your bone and your flesh."
  3. And his mother's relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the hearing of all the leaders of Shechem; and they were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, "He is our relative."
  4. They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, and they followed him.
  5. Then he went to his father's house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
  1. 여룹바알의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜으로 외삼촌들을 찾아가서 외삼촌들과 외가댁 온 일가에게 청하였다.
  2. "세겜의 모든 어른들에게, 여룹바알의 아들 칠십 명의 지배를 받는 것과 한 사람의 지배를 받는 것과 어느 것이 나으냐고 물어봐 주십시오. 그리고 내가 그들과 한 골육이라는 것도 잊지 말라고 해주십시오."
  3. 그의 외삼촌들은 이 말을 세겜의 모든 어른들에게 전해 주었다. 그들은 이 말을 듣고 아비멜렉이 자기들과 한 혈육이라는 생각에서 마음이 그에게 기울어
  4. 바알브릿 신전에서 은 칠십 세겔을 내다가 그에게 주었다. 아비멜렉은 그 돈으로 할 일 없는 건달패를 사서 졸개로 삼아 거느리고
  5. 오브라에 있는 아버지의 집으로 가서 자기 형제들 곧 여룹바알의 아들 칠십 명을 한 바위 위에서 죽였다. 그러나 여룹바알의 막내 아들 요담만은 어디엔가 숨어 있었으므로 살아 남았다.
  1. All the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar which was in Shechem.
  2. Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and called out. Thus he said to them, "Listen to me, O men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
  3. "Once the trees went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us!'
  4. "But the olive tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my fatness with which God and men are honored, and go to wave over the trees?'
  5. "Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come, reign over us!'
  1. 세겜의 모든 어른들과 밀로의 온 집안은 세겜에 있는 석상 옆 상수리나무 아래에 모여 아비멜렉을 왕으로 받들었다.
  2. 이 소식이 요담에게 전해지자 그는 그리짐 산 꼭대기에 가 서서 소리 높이 외쳤다. "세겜의 어른들은 내 말을 들으시오. 그래야 하느님도 여러분의 말을 들어주실 것이오.
  3. 하루는 나무들이 모여서 자기들을 다스릴 왕을 세우기로 하고 올리브 나무에게 청을 드려보았소. '우리 왕이 되어주게나!'
  4. 그러나 올리브 나무는 사양을 했소. '내 기름은 모든 신과 사람을 영화롭게 하는 것, 그런데 나 어찌 기름을 내지 않고 자리를 떠나 다른 나무들을 내려다보며 으스대겠는가?'
  5. 그래서 나무들은 무화과나무에게 청을 드려보았소. '자네가 와서 우리 왕이 되어주게나.'
  1. "But the fig tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?'
  2. "Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come, reign over us!'
  3. "But the vine said to them, 'Shall I leave my new wine, which cheers God and men, and go to wave over the trees?'
  4. "Finally all the trees said to the bramble, 'You come, reign over us!'
  5. "The bramble said to the trees, 'If in truth you are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.'
  1. 그러나 무화과나무도 사양을 했소. '나 어찌 이 훌륭한 과일을 내지 않고, 나 어찌 이 달콤한 맛을 내지 않고 자리를 떠나 다른 나무들을 내려다보며 으스대겠는가?'
  2. 그래서 나무들은 포도나무에게 청을 드려보았소. '자네가 와서 우리 왕이 되어주게나.'
  3. 그러나 포도나무도 사양을 했소. '내 술은 모든 신과 사람을 흥겹게 해주는 것, 그런데 나 어찌 이 술을 내지 않고 자리를 떠나 다른 나무들을 내려다보며 으스대겠는가?'
  4. 그래서 모든 나무는 가시나무에게 청을 드려보았소. '자네가 와서 우리 왕이 되어주게나.'
  5. 그러자 가시나무는 그 나무들에게 이렇게 대답하는 것이었소! '너희가 정말로 나를 왕으로 모시려는가? 정녕 그렇거든 와서 내 그늘 아래 숨어라. 그러지 않았다가는 이 가시덤불이 불을 뿜어 레바논의 송백까지 삼켜버릴 것이다.'
  1. "Now therefore, if you have dealt in truth and integrity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have dealt with him as he deserved--
  2. for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian;
  3. but you have risen against my father's house today and have killed his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your relative--
  4. if then you have dealt in truth and integrity with Jerubbaal and his house this day, rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.
  5. "But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the men of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from Beth-millo, and consume Abimelech."
  1. 그러니 이제 여러분이 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼는 것을 어찌 떳떳한 일이라 하겠소? 그러고도 어찌 아무 잘못이 없다고 하겠소? 그러고도 여룹바알과 그의 집안에 잘해 드렸다고 하겠소? 그것이 어찌 그의 업적에 보답하는 것이 되겠소?
  2. 내 아버지가 죽음을 무릅쓰고 싸워 여러분을 미디안의 손에서 건져냈는데
  3. 여러분은 오늘 내 아버지의 집안을 뒤엎으려고 들고일어나 칠십 명이나 되는 그의 아들들을 한 바위 위에서 죽였소. 그리고 여러분 세겜의 어른들은 계집종의 자식인 아비멜렉을 여러분의 혈육이라고 해서 왕으로 떠받들었소.
  4. 만일 여러분이 이 날 여룹바알과 그 집안에 한 것이 떳떳하고 아무 잘못이 없다면 여러분은 아비멜렉과 행복스럽게 잘들 지내보시오.
  5. 만일 그렇지 않다면, 아비멜렉에게서 불이 나와 세겜의 어른들과 밀로의 집안을 삼키고 세겜의 어른들과 밀로의 집안에서 불이 나와 아비멜렉을 삼키라고 나는 빌겠소."
  1. Then Jotham escaped and fled, and went to Beer and remained there because of Abimelech his brother.
  2. Now Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.
  3. Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,
  4. so that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
  5. The men of Shechem set men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who might pass by them along the road; and it was told to Abimelech.
  1. 이렇게 말을 마치고 나서 요담은 도망하여 브엘에 이르렀다. 그는 형 아비멜렉을 피하여 거기에 머물러 있었다.
  2. 아비멜렉이 이스라엘을 다스린 지 삼 년이 지났다.
  3. 하느님께서 악령을 보내시니, 아비멜렉과 세겜의 어른들 사이가 나빠져, 세겜의 어른들이 아비멜렉을 배반하게 되었다.
  4. 이렇게 하여 여룹바알의 아들 칠십 명이 당한 억울한 죽음을 원수갚는데 자기 형제를 죽여 피 흘린 죄를 아비멜렉에게 갚으시고 제 형제를 죽이는 자를 도와준 세겜의 어른들에게도 그 죄를 갚으시려고 하신 것이다.
  5. 아비멜렉을 괴롭히려고 세겜의 어른들은 언덕에 사람들을 매복시켜 놓고 그리로 지나가는 사람을 모두 털게 하였는데 이 일이 아비멜렉에게도 알려졌다.
  1. Now Gaal the son of Ebed came with his relatives, and crossed over into Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.
  2. They went out into the field and gathered the grapes of their vineyards and trod them, and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god, and ate and drank and cursed Abimelech.
  3. Then Gaal the son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is Zebul not his lieutenant? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him?
  4. "Would, therefore, that this people were under my authority! Then I would remove Abimelech." And he said to Abimelech, "Increase your army and come out."
  5. When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.
  1. 마침 에벳의 아들 가알이라는 사람이 자기 형제들과 함께 세겜으로 이사왔는데, 그는 세겜 어른들의 신망을 얻었다.
  2. 때는 밭에서 포도를 따서 밟아 즙을 짜는 추수철이었다. 사람들이 잔치를 베풀고 신전에 들어가서 먹고 마시면서 아비멜렉을 욕하는 자리에서
  3. 에벳의 아들 가알이 외쳤다. "아비멜렉이 누군데, 그 세겜의 피를 받았다는 자가 누군데, 우리가 그의 종이 되어야 한단 말입니까? 그 여룹바알의 아들과 그의 심복 즈불이 도리어 세겜의 조상인 하몰 집안 사람들을 섬겨야 할 것 아닙니까? 그런데 어찌하여 우리가 그의 종이 되어야 한단 말입니까?
  4. 나에게 이 백성을 거느릴 권한만 준다면, 나는 아비멜렉에게 싸움을 걸겠습니다. 그리고 그 녀석을 몰아내 보이겠습니다."
  5. 그 성의 추장 즈불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말을 전해 듣고 화가 나서
  1. He sent messengers to Abimelech deceitfully, saying, "Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem; and behold, they are stirring up the city against you.
  2. "Now therefore, arise by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.
  3. "In the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you shall do to them whatever you can."
  4. So Abimelech and all the people who were with him arose by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.
  5. Now Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the city gate; and Abimelech and the people who were with him arose from the ambush.
  1. 아루마에 있는 아비멜렉에게 전갈을 보냈다. "보십시오. 에벳의 아들 가알이라는 자가 제 형제들과 함께 세겜에 와서 온 성읍을 충동질하여 역모를 꾸미고 있습니다.
  2. 그러니 어서 휘하 군대를 몸소 이끌고 출동하셔서 어둠을 틈타 들에 매복하셨다가
  3. 아침 일찍 동틀 때 행동을 개시하여 성을 기습하시는 것이 좋겠습니다. 가알이 무리들을 이끌고 대적하러 나오거든 닥치는 대로 해치우십시오."
  4. 그 말대로 아비멜렉은 어둠을 틈타 휘하 군대를 총출동시켜 세겜 맞은편에 이르러 군대를 네 패로 나누어 매복시켰다.
  5. 에벳의 아들 가알이 성문 어귀에 나와 섰는데, 아비멜렉이 거느린 군대가 매복해 있던 곳에서 움직이기 시작하였다.
  1. When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, "Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains." But Zebul said to him, "You are seeing the shadow of the mountains as if they were men."
  2. Gaal spoke again and said, "Behold, people are coming down from the highest part of the land, and one company comes by the way of the diviners' oak."
  3. Then Zebul said to him, "Where is your boasting now with which you said, 'Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?' Is this not the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them!"
  4. So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech.
  5. Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded up to the entrance of the gate.
  1. 가알이 그들을 보고 즈불에게 물었다. "저기 산꼭대기에서 웬 사람들이 내려오고 있소?" 즈불이 "산 그림자를 사람으로 잘못 본 거 아니오?" 하고 시치미를 떼었지만,
  2. 다시 가알이 말하였다. "저것 보시오. 사람들이 저기 배꼽마루에서 내려오고 다른 한 떼는 점쟁이 상수리나무 쪽에서 오고 있소."
  3. 그제야 즈불이 말하였다. "아비멜렉이 누군데 우리가 그의 종이 되어야 하느냐 하면서 으스대더니, 그 용기가 어디로 갔소? 저 사람들이 바로 당신이 우습게 보던 사람들이오. 어서 나가서 싸워보시오."
  4. 가알은 세겜의 어른들을 거느리고 앞장서 나가 아비멜렉과 맞붙어 싸우다가
  5. 아비멜렉에게 쫓겨 도망치게 되었다. 가알의 부하 군인들의 시체는 성문 앞까지 너저분하게 뒹굴었다.
  1. Then Abimelech remained at Arumah, but Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives so that they could not remain in Shechem.
  2. Now it came about the next day, that the people went out to the field, and it was told to Abimelech.
  3. So he took his people and divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field; when he looked and saw the people coming out from the city, he arose against them and slew them.
  4. Then Abimelech and the company who was with him dashed forward and stood in the entrance of the city gate; the other two companies then dashed against all who were in the field and slew them.
  5. Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and he captured the city and killed the people who were in it; then he razed the city and sowed it with salt.
  1. 그 후 아비멜렉은 아루마로 돌아가고 즈불은 가알과 그의 형제들을 쫓아내어 세겜에 발도 붙이지 못하게 하였다.
  2. 다음날 세겜 백성들이 들로 나갔다는 소식이 아비멜렉에게 전해졌다.
  3. 그는 군대를 거느리고 나가 세 패로 나누어 들에 매복하고 있다가 백성들이 성읍을 떠나는 것을 보고 들이닥쳐 쳐죽였다.
  4. 아비멜렉은 한 패를 이끌고 쳐들어가 성문 어귀를 지키고 나머지 두 패를 시켜 들에 있는 사람들을 덮쳐 쳐죽이게 하였다.
  5. 아비멜렉은 그 날 종일 그 성을 공격하여 점령하였다. 그리고 그 안에 있는 백성들을 죽이고 온 성읍을 헐고 소금을 뿌렸다.
  1. When all the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
  2. It was told Abimelech that all the leaders of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
  3. So Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a branch from the trees, and lifted it and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, "What you have seen me do, hurry and do likewise."
  4. All the people also cut down each one his branch and followed Abimelech, and put them on the inner chamber and set the inner chamber on fire over those inside, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women.
  5. Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he camped against Thebez and captured it.
  1. 이 소식을 듣고 세겜 성루에 들어가 있던 어른들은 엘브릿 신당 밀실로 피신하였다.
  2. 아비멜렉은 세겜 성루에 있던 어른들이 모두 거기에 모여 있다는 말을 듣고는
  3. 휘하 군대를 모두 이끌고 살몬 산으로 올라가며 손에 든 쌍날 도끼로 나무를 찍어 어깨에 메고 뒤따르는 군인들에게 일렀다. "내가 이러고 있는데, 어째서 보고만 있느냐? 어서 내가 하는 대로 하여라."
  4. 군인들은 저마다 나무를 찍어가지고 아비멜렉을 따라 나무를 쌓아놓고 그 밀실에 불을 질렀다. 그리하여 세겜 성루에 있던 사람이 다 죽었는데 남녀 천 명 가량이 죽었다.
  5. 그 후에 아비멜렉은 데베스로 진군하여 포위하고 공격해서 그 성을 함락시켰다.
  1. But there was a strong tower in the center of the city, and all the men and women with all the leaders of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up on the roof of the tower.
  2. So Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and approached the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire.
  3. But a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech's head, crushing his skull.
  4. Then he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, so that it will not be said of me, 'A woman slew him.'" So the young man pierced him through, and he died.
  5. When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each departed to his home.
  1. 그런데 그 성읍 한가운데는 견고한 성루가 있었는데 그 성의 어른들뿐 아니라 남녀 주민이 모두 그 안으로 도망쳐 들어가 문을 걸어 닫고 성루 옥상으로 올라갔다.
  2. 아비멜렉은 그 성루로 공격해 가서 성루 문 가까이에 불을 지르려고 하였다.
  3. 그 때 한 여인이 아비멜렉의 머리에 맷돌짝을 내리던져 그의 두개골을 부수었다.
  4. 아비멜렉은 즉시 무기 당번을 불러 일렀다. "내 칼을 뽑아 나를 죽여라. 여자한테 죽었다는 말을 들을 수는 없다." 그리하여 아비멜렉은 무기 당번에게 찔려 죽었다.
  5. 이스라엘 사람들은 아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 보고 각기 제 고장으로 돌아갔다.
  1. Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers.
  2. Also God returned all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads, and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
  1. 이렇게 하느님께서는 자기 형제 칠십 명을 죽여 아버지에게 못할 짓을 한 죄를 아비멜렉에게 갚으셨고
  2. 세겜 사람들도 죄를 받아 죽게 하셨다. 여룹바알의 다른 아들 요담이 퍼부은 저주가 그대로 이루어졌던 것이다.
