- For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
- For it is written, "I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE."
- Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
- For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.
- For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom;

- 멸망할 사람들에게는 십자가의 이치가 한낱 어리석은 생각에 불과하지만 구원받을 우리에게는 곧 하느님의 힘입니다.
- 성서에도 "나는 지혜롭다는 자들의 지혜를 없애버리고 똑똑하다는 자들의 식견을 물리치리라." 하는 말씀이 있지 않습니까?
- 그러니 이제 지혜로운 자가 어디 있고 학자가 어디 있습니까? 또 이 세상의 이론가가 어디 있습니까? 하느님께서 이 세상의 지혜가 어리석다는 것을 보여주시지 않았습니까?
- 세상이 자기 지혜로는 하느님을 알 수 없습니다. 이것이 하느님의 지혜로운 경륜입니다. 그래서 하느님께서는 우리가 전하는 소위 어리석다는 복음을 통해서 믿는 사람들을 구원하시기로 작정하셨습니다.
- 유다인들은 기적을 요구하고 그리스인들은 지혜를 찾지만

- but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness,
- but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
- Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
- For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;
- but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong,

- 우리는 십자가에 달리신 그리스도를 선포할 따름입니다. 그리스도가 십자가에 달렸다는 것은 유다인들에게는 비위에 거슬리고 이방인들에게는 어리석게 보이는 일입니다.
- 그러나 유다인이나 그리스인이나 할 것 없이 하느님의 부르심을 받은 사람들에게는 그가 곧 메시아시며 하느님의 힘이며 하느님의 지혜입니다.
- 하느님께서 하시는 일이 사람의 눈에는 어리석어 보이지만 사람들이 하는 일보다 지혜롭고, 하느님의 힘이 사람의 눈에는 약하게 보이지만 사람의 힘보다 강합니다.
- 형제 여러분, 여러분이 하느님의 부르심을 받았을 때의 일을 생각해 보십시오. 세속적인 견지에서 볼 때에 여러분 중에 지혜로운 사람, 유력한 사람, 또는 가문이 좋은 사람이 과연 몇이나 있었습니까?
- 그런데 하느님께서는 지혜있다는 자들을 부끄럽게 하시려고 이 세상의 어리석은 사람들을 택하셨으며, 강하다는 자들을 부끄럽게 하시려고 이 세상의 약한 사람들을 택하셨습니다.

- and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are,
- so that no man may boast before God.
- But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,
- so that, just as it is written, "LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD."

- 또 유력한 자를 무력하게 하시려고 세상에서 보잘것없는 사람들과 멸시받는 사람들, 곧 아무것도 아닌 사람들을 택하셨습니다.
- 그러니 인간으로서는 아무도 하느님 앞에서 자랑할 수 없다는 말입니다.
- 그러나 하느님께서는 여러분을 그리스도 예수와 한 몸이 되게 하셨습니다. 그리스도는 하느님께서 주신 우리의 지혜이십니다. 그분 덕택으로 우리는 하느님과 올바른 관계에 놓이게 되었고, 하느님의 거룩한 백성이 되었고, 해방을 받았습니다. 이것은 다 하느님께서 하신 일입니다.
- 그러므로 성서에도 기록되어 있듯이 "누구든지 자랑하려거든 주님을 자랑하십시오."
