	에스더 6:1-8:17 아닥사스다 왕은 잠이 오지 않아 궁중 일기를 읽다가 모르드개의 공적을 알게 되었다. 그러자 왕은 그에게 상을 베풀었는가 알아본 다음, 하만을 시켜 모르드개를 존귀케 하였다. 둘째 날 잔치에서 에스더는 하만의 음모를 왕께 폭로하였고, 모르드개를 달고자 한 나무에는 하만이 처형당했다. 그리고 에스더의 간청으로 인해 유다인들을 죽이라는 왕의 조서는 철회되고 오히려 원수를 갚게 되었다.

	모르드개가 존귀케 됨(6:1-6:14)

During that night the king could not sleep so he gave an order to bring the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king.

It was found written what Mordecai had reported concerning Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs who were doorkeepers, that they had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.

The king said, "What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" Then the king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him."

So the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace in order to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows which he had prepared for him.

The king's servants said to him, "Behold, Haman is standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him come in."

그 날 밤, 왕은 잠이 오지 않아서 궁중실록을 가져다 읽게 하였다.

그 기록을 읽어 내려가다가 대궐 수문장으로 있던 두 내시 빅단과 테레스가 자기를 암살하려고 기회를 노리고 있는 것을 모르드개가 고발했다는 대목에 이르러,

왕은 그 모르드개라는 사람에게 무슨 상을 내려 공을 치하했느냐고 물었다. 왕을 모시는 시종들이 "아무것도 해준 것이 없습니다." 하고 대답하였다.

왕은 "밖에 누가 없느냐?" 하고 불렀다. 때마침 하만이 궁전 바깥뜰에 들어섰다. 하만은 자기가 세워둔 기둥에 모르드개를 달려고 왕의 허락을 받으러 막 들어서던 참이었다.

시종들이 밖에 하만이 대령하고 있다고 하자 왕은 어서 들게 하라고 하였다.

So Haman came in and the king said to him, "What is to be done for the man whom the king desires to honor?" And Haman said to himself, "Whom would the king desire to honor more than me?"

Then Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king desires to honor,

let them bring a royal robe which the king has worn, and the horse on which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown has been placed;

and let the robe and the horse be handed over to one of the king's most noble princes and let them array the man whom the king desires to honor and lead him on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, 'Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king desires to honor.'"

Then the king said to Haman, "Take quickly the robes and the horse as you have said, and do so for Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting at the king's gate; do not fall short in anything of all that you have said."

하만이 들어 서자 왕이 이렇게 물었다. "내가 상을 내리고 싶은 사람이 있는데, 무엇을 해주었으면 좋겠는가?" 하만은 '왕이 상을 내리고 싶은 사람이 있다면 나밖에 누가 있으랴.' 싶어,

이렇게 진언하였다. "임금님께서 상을 내리고 싶으신 사람이 있으시거든,

임금님께서 입으시는 의복과 타시는 말을 내어온 다음 그 머리에 관을 씌우시고,

임금님께서 귀하게 여기시는 한 대신에게 그 왕복과 말을 맡기시어, 상을 내리시려는 그 사람에게 왕복을 입히시고 말을 태워 성내 광장을 돌게 하십시오. 그리고 그로 하여금 경마잡고 가면서 '왕께서 상을 내리시려는 사람에게는 이렇게 해주신다.'고 외치게 하십시오."

왕이 하만에게 말했다. "그 말대로 곧 시행하여라. 그대는 내 옷과 말을 내어다가 문간에서 일보는 유다인 모르드개에게 이제 말한 것을 하나도 빠뜨리지 말고 그대로 해주도록 하여라."

So Haman took the robe and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, "Thus it shall be done to the man whom the king desires to honor."

Then Mordecai returned to the king's gate. But Haman hurried home, mourning, with his head covered.

Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish origin, you will not overcome him, but will surely fall before him."

While they were still talking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and hastily brought Haman to the banquet which Esther had prepared.

하만은 하릴없이 왕복을 가져다가 모르드개에게 입히고 말을 끌어내어 태운 다음 광장으로 데리고 나가 돌아야 했다. 하만은 경마잡고 가면서 "왕께서 상을 내리시려는 사람은 이같이 해주신다." 하고 외쳤다.

하만은 모르드개를 대궐 수위실로 돌려보내고 고개를 떨어뜨린 채 울상이 되어 급히 집으로 돌아가,

아내 제레스와 측근을 모두 불러놓고 방금 당한 일을 들려주었다. 그의 참모들과 아내 제레스가 이렇게 말하였다. "대감은 이제 유다 종자 모르드개 앞에 무릎을 꿇었습니다. 다시는 그 앞에서 머리를 들지 못하게 되었습니다. 그러니, 아예 그 사람에게 손을 댈 생각을 마십시오."

이런 이야기를 하고 있는데, 왕을 모시는 내시들이 와서 에스델이 베푼 잔치에 하만을 급히 데리고 갔다.

	하만의 처형(7:1-7:10)

Now the king and Haman came to drink wine with Esther the queen.

And the king said to Esther on the second day also as they drank their wine at the banquet, "What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you And what is your request? Even to half of the kingdom it shall be done."

Then Queen Esther replied, "If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me as my petition, and my people as my request;

for we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed and to be annihilated. Now if we had only been sold as slaves, men and women, I would have remained silent, for the trouble would not be commensurate with the annoyance to the king."

Then King Ahasuerus asked Queen Esther, "Who is he, and where is he, who would presume to do thus?"

그리하여 하만은 왕과 함께 에스델 왕후가 베푼 잔치에 참석하게 되었다.

이 두 번째 날에도 왕은 술을 마시면서 에스델에게 물었다. "에스델, 어서 소청을 말해 보오. 무엇이든지 들어주겠소. 진정 소원이라면, 나라 절반이라도 떼어주리다."

왕후 에스델의 대답은 이러하였다. "만일 임금님께서 소첩을 귀엽게 보아주신다면, 또 임금님께서 좋으시다면 이 목숨을 살려주십시오. 제 소원은 이것입니다. 제 겨레도 살려주십시오. 제발 부탁합니다.

지금 저와 저의 겨레는 다 죽어 멸종될 처지에 이르렀습니다. 종으로 팔려간다고만 해도 아무 말씀 안 드리겠습니다. 그러나 그 일로 임금님께서 입으실 손해는 무엇으로 메우시겠습니까?"

"도대체 그 놈이 누구요? 그런 음모를 꾸민 놈이 지금 어디 있소?" 하고 아하스에로스 왕이 캐어 묻자,

Esther said, "A foe and an enemy is this wicked Haman!" Then Haman became terrified before the king and queen.

The king arose in his anger from drinking wine and went into the palace garden; but Haman stayed to beg for his life from Queen Esther, for he saw that harm had been determined against him by the king.

Now when the king returned from the palace garden into the place where they were drinking wine, Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, "Will he even assault the queen with me in the house?" As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

Then Harbonah, one of the eunuchs who were before the king said, "Behold indeed, the gallows standing at Haman's house fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai who spoke good on behalf of the king!" And the king said, "Hang him on it."

So they hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mordecai, and the king's anger subsided.

왕후 에스델은 그제야 사실을 털어놓았다. "우리를 박해하는 우리의 원수, 그 사람은 바로 이 교활한 하만입니다." 에스델의 입에서 이 말이 떨어지자, 하만은 왕과 왕후 앞에서 부들부들 떨었다.

왕은 너무 화가 나서 자리를 차고 일어나 안뜰로 나갔다. 틀림없이 왕에게서 벼락이 내릴 것을 알고 하만은 왕후 에스델에게 목숨만은 살려달라고 애원하였다.

왕이 안뜰에서 다시 술자리로 돌아와 보니, 에스델이 몸을 누이고 있는 평상에 하만이 엎드려 있는 것이었다. 이것을 보고 왕은 "네놈이 내 거처에서, 더구나 내 앞에서 왕후를 겁탈하려느냐?" 하고 호통을 쳤다. 왕의 입에서 이 호령이 떨어지자마자 하만의 얼굴은 수건으로 가리워졌다.

왕을 모시던 내시 가운데 하르보나가 나서서 말하였다. "마침 하만의 집에 높이가 쉰 자나 되는 기둥이 하나 서 있습니다. 임금님을 살려 드린 모르드개를 매달려고 하만이 세워둔 것입니다." 왕이 말했다. "그 기둥에 이 놈을 달아라." 어명을 따라,

하만은 모르드개를 죽이려고 세웠던 기둥에 자기가 매달려 죽게 되었다. 그제야 왕의 노여움이 풀렸다.

	유다인들의 구원(8:1-8:17)

On that day King Ahasuerus gave the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews, to Queen Esther; and Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had disclosed what he was to her.

The king took off his signet ring which he had taken away from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

Then Esther spoke again to the king, fell at his feet, wept and implored him to avert the evil scheme of Haman the Agagite and his plot which he had devised against the Jews.

The king extended the golden scepter to Esther. So Esther arose and stood before the king.

Then she said, "If it pleases the king and if I have found favor before him and the matter seems proper to the king and I am pleasing in his sight, let it be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the king's provinces.

그 날로 아하스에로스 왕은 유다인들을 박해하려던 하만의 집을 에스델 왕후에게 주었다. 에스델은 그제야 자기와 모르드개가 어떤 사이인지를 밝혔다. 그리하여 모르드개는 어전에 나오게 되었고,

왕은 하만에게서 찾은 인장반지를 빼어 모르드개에게 맡겼다. 에스델은 하만의 집을 모르드개에게 맡겨 관리하게 하였다.

에스델은 다시 어전에 나가 아각 사람 하만이 유다인을 처치하려고 꾸며놓은 음모를 거두어달라고, 왕의 발 아래 엎드려 울면서 애원하였다.

왕은 에스델에게 금지팡이를 내어 밀었다. 그제야 에스델은 어전에서 몸을 일으켜 세우고

"만일 임금님께서 좋으시다면, 만일 소첩을 귀엽게 보시어 제 말씀을 옳게 보시고 소첩을 애중히 여겨주신다면, 아각 사람 함다다의 아들 하만이 전국 각 지방에 있는 유다인을 몰살하려고 써서 돌린 칙령을 거두어주십시오.

"For how can I endure to see the calamity which will befall my people, and how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?"

So King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, "Behold, I have given the house of Haman to Esther, and him they have hanged on the gallows because he had stretched out his hands against the Jews.

"Now you write to the Jews as you see fit, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's signet ring; for a decree which is written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's signet ring may not be revoked."

So the king's scribes were called at that time in the third month (that is, the month Sivan), on the twenty-third day; and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded to the Jews, the satraps, the governors and the princes of the provinces which extended from India to Ethiopia, 127 provinces, to every province according to its script, and to every people according to their language as well as to the Jews according to their script and their language.

He wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, and sealed it with the king's signet ring, and sent letters by couriers on horses, riding on steeds sired by the royal stud.

제 겨레에게 닥쳐온 이 재난을 어떻게 그냥 보고만 있겠습니까? 제 친척이 망하는 것을 어찌 바라보고만 있겠습니까?"

아하스에로스 왕은 드디어 에스델 왕후와 유다인 모르드개에게 윤허를 내렸다. "나는 유다인을 멸망시키려고 한 죗값으로 하만을 이미 기둥에 매달아 죽였고, 그의 집을 에스델에게 주었다.

이제 어떻게 하는 것이 유다인에게 좋을지 그대들 소견에 맡길 터이니, 내 이름으로 문서를 만들고 내 인장반지로 인을 쳐서 돌려라. 내 이름으로 만들고 내 인을 친 칙서는 아무도 취소할 수 없다."

왕의 비서관들이 곧 소집되었다. 때는 시완월 곧 삼월 이십삼일이었다. 비서관들은 인도에서 에티오피아에 이르는 백이십칠 지방에 널려 있는 유다인과 제후들과 총독과 각 지방 수령들 앞으로 보내는 칙서를 모르드개가 불러주는 대로 쓰고 각 지방의 문자와 각 민족의 언어로 옮겨 문서로 작성하였다.

이렇게 아하스에로스 왕의 이름으로 만들고 왕의 인장반지로 인을 친 이 칙서를 보발꾼들이 왕실 역마를 타고 전달하였다.

In them the king granted the Jews who were in each and every city the right to assemble and to defend their lives, to destroy, to kill and to annihilate the entire army of any people or province which might attack them, including children and women, and to plunder their spoil,

on one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month (that is, the month Adar).

A copy of the edict to be issued as law in each and every province was published to all the peoples, so that the Jews would be ready for this day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

The couriers, hastened and impelled by the king's command, went out, riding on the royal steeds; and the decree was given out at the citadel in Susa.

Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a large crown of gold and a garment of fine linen and purple; and the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.

왕은 그 칙서에서 각 도시에 널려 사는 유다인들은 정당방위로 한데 뭉쳐서 자기들을 박해하려는 모든 민족과 각 지방 무장대를 처자까지 몰살하고 재산을 약탈해도 좋다고 하였다.

그리고 이 일은 아하스에로스 왕국 안의 모든 지방에서 아달월 곧 십이월 십삼일, 하루 안에 끝내도록 되어 있었다.

이 칙서를 모든 지방에 다 보내어 모든 민족에게 공포하게 하였다. 유다인들로 하여금 그 날을 맞아 원수를 갚을 준비를 시키려는 것이었다.

보발꾼들은 왕실 역마를 타고 어명을 전하러 급히 떠났다. 이 칙서는 수사 성에도 나붙었다.

모르드개는 자줏빛 옷감과 흰 옷감으로 만든 궁중 예복에 큰 금관을 쓰고, 흰 모시와 붉은 옷감으로 만든 도포를 입고 어전에서 물러나왔다. 그를 맞아 온 수사 성은 환성을 올렸다.

For the Jews there was light and gladness and joy and honor.

In each and every province and in each and every city, wherever the king's commandment and his decree arrived, there was gladness and joy for the Jews, a feast and a holiday And many among the peoples of the land became Jews, for the dread of the Jews had fallen on them.

마침내 유다인들에게는 빛나는 영광과 벅찬 기쁨이 찾아온 것이다.

이 어명이 법령으로 선포된 지방이나 도시 어디서나 유다인들은 이 날을 축일로 삼고 잔치를 벌이며 기뻐 뛰었다. 다른 민족들로서 유다인으로 귀화하는 사람도 많았다. 그만큼 그들은 유다인들의 위력에 눌렸던 것이다.
