- And Job again took up his discourse and said,
- "Oh that I were as in months gone by, As in the days when God watched over me;
- When His lamp shone over my head, And by His light I walked through darkness;
- As I was in the prime of my days, When the friendship of God was over my tent;
- When the Almighty was yet with me, And my children were around me;

- 욥이 탄식하며 읊조렸다.
- 지나간 옛 시절은 영영 돌아오지 않으려나! 하느님께서 지켜주시던 그 날은 끝내 돌아오지 않으려나!
- 하느님의 등불이 내 머리 위에서 빛나고 그의 횃불로 어둠을 몰아내며 거닐던 그 날,
- 내 나이 한창일 무렵, 하느님께서 나의 천막을 감싸주시던 그 때,
- 전능하신 분께서 나를 버리시지 않았고 아이들도 나를 에워 싸며 돌아가던 그 시절,

- When my steps were bathed in butter, And the rock poured out for me streams of oil!
- "When I went out to the gate of the city, When I took my seat in the square,
- The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the old men arose and stood.
- "The princes stopped talking And put their hands on their mouths;
- The voice of the nobles was hushed, And their tongue stuck to their palate.

- 나는 우유로 발을 씻었지. 기름이 내가 되어 바위 사이를 흘러내리던 시절,
- 내가 성문께로 발을 옮겨 성문 앞 광장에 자리를 잡으면
- 젊은이들은 나를 보고 비켜 서고 노인들은 자리를 털고 일어났네.
- 양반들은 손으로 입을 가리고 하던 말을 삼켰으며
- 귀족들은 입천장에 혀가 붙어 소리를 죽이고

- "For when the ear heard, it called me blessed, And when the eye saw, it gave witness of me,
- Because I delivered the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.
- "The blessing of the one ready to perish came upon me, And I made the widow's heart sing for joy.
- "I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a turban.
- "I was eyes to the blind And feet to the lame.

- 귀는 내 이야기를 듣고 찬사를 아끼지 않았으며 눈은 내가 하는 일을 보고 즐겨서 증언하였네.
- 도와달라고 아우성치는 빈민들, 의지할 데 없는 고아를 내가 건져주지 않았던가?
- 숨을 거두며 하는 마지막 축복은 모두 나에게 쏠렸고 과부의 서러움은 나에게서 기쁨으로 바뀌었네.
- 정의가 나의 옷이었으며, 공평이 나의 두루마기요, 나의 면류관이었는데......
- 나는 소경에게는 눈이었고 절뚝발이에게는 다리였었지.

- "I was a father to the needy, And I investigated the case which I did not know.
- "I broke the jaws of the wicked And snatched the prey from his teeth.
- "Then I thought, 'I shall die in my nest, And I shall multiply my days as the sand.
- 'My root is spread out to the waters, And dew lies all night on my branch.
- 'My glory is ever new with me, And my bow is renewed in my hand.'

- 거지들은 나를 아버지로 여겼으며 낯선 사람들도 나에게 와서 억울함을 호소하였네.
- 악인의 턱을 때려부수고 그가 물고 있는 것을 이빨 사이에서 빼내기도 하였지.
- 그러니 내가 어찌 이런 생각을 하지 않을 것인가? "나는 보금자리와 함께 타버렸다가도 다시 재를 털고 일어나 오래오래 사는 불사조,
- 나의 뿌리는 물기를 따라 뻗고 밤새 이슬에 젖은 내 잎사귀는 싱싱하기만 하구나.
- 나의 영광은 날로 새롭고 활 잡은 내 손은 결코 맥이 풀리지 않으리라."

- "To me they listened and waited, And kept silent for my counsel.
- "After my words they did not speak again, And my speech dropped on them.
- "They waited for me as for the rain, And opened their mouth as for the spring rain.
- "I smiled on them when they did not believe, And the light of my face they did not cast down.
- "I chose a way for them and sat as chief, And dwelt as a king among the troops, As one who comforted the mourners.

- 나의 입술이 떨어지기만 기다리며 나의 의견에 묵묵히 귀를 기울였네.
- 내가 말을 마치면 다만 그들은 고개를 끄덕일 뿐, 나의 말은 그들 위에 방울방울 떨어졌지.
- 비를 기다리듯이 그들은 나를 기다렸고 입을 벌리고 봄비를 받아 마시듯이 하였네.
- 내가 웃기만 해도 그들은 어리둥절하였고 내가 미소만 지어도 으쓱해 하였는데,
- 나 윗자리에 앉아 그들의 갈 길을 지시하며 군대를 거느린 제왕처럼 앉아 목메어 우는 사람들을 위로하던 아, 그 시절은 다시 오지 않을 것인가!
