	사사기 20:17-21:25 베냐민 지파를 상대로 전쟁하던 이스라엘 연합군은 두 번 연속으로 패배했다. 그러나 하나님께 금식하고 제사드리며 하나님의 뜻을 구하여 응답받고 난 후 베냐민 지파를 섬멸할 수 있었다. 베냐민 자손들 중 용사 600명을 제외한 전원을 몰살시킨 연합군은 미스바 총회에 불참한 길르앗을 징계하였고, 길르앗과 실로 여인들을 취하여 베냐민 사람들의 아내를 삼게 함으로써 베냐민 지파의 멸절을 막았다.

	이스라엘과 베냐민의 전쟁(20:17-20:48)

Then the men of Israel besides Benjamin were numbered, 400,000 men who draw the sword; all these were men of war.

Now the sons of Israel arose, went up to Bethel, and inquired of God and said, "Who shall go up first for us to battle against the sons of Benjamin?" Then the LORD said, "Judah shall go up first."

So the sons of Israel arose in the morning and camped against Gibeah.

The men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel arrayed for battle against them at Gibeah.

Then the sons of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and felled to the ground on that day 22,000 men of Israel.

반면에 이스라엘군은 베냐민군을 제외하고 400,000명이었으며 그들은 모두 잘 훈련된 군인들이었다.

이스라엘군은 벧엘로 올라가서 하나님께 물었다. '우리 중에 어느 지파가 먼저 올라가서 베냐민 지파와 싸워야 합니까?' 그러자 여호와께서 '유다가 먼저 올라가거라'하고 말씀하셨다.

그래서 이스라엘군은 다음 날 아침에 일어나 기브아 주변에 진을 치고

나가서 베냐민 사람과 싸우려고 전투 태세를 취했다.

그러나 베냐민 사람들이 기브아에서 나와 그 날 이스라엘군 22,000명을 쳐죽였다.

But the people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and arrayed for battle again in the place where they had arrayed themselves the first day.

The sons of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and inquired of the LORD, saying, "Shall we again draw near for battle against the sons of my brother Benjamin?" And the LORD said, "Go up against him."

Then the sons of Israel came against the sons of Benjamin the second day.

Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah the second day and felled to the ground again 18,000 men of the sons of Israel; all these drew the sword.

Then all the sons of Israel and all the people went up and came to Bethel and wept; thus they remained there before the LORD and fasted that day until evening. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.

그러자 이스라엘 사람들은 예배처로 올라가 여호와 앞에서 날이 저물도록 울며 '우리가 다시 가서 우리 형제 베냐민 사람들과 싸워야 합니까?' 하고 물었다. 그때 여호와께서 '가서 싸워라' 하시므로 그들은 다시 용기를 내어 전날 포진했던 곳으로 가서 전열을 갖추고

베냐민 사람을 치려고 나아갔다.

이번에도 베냐민 사람들이 기브아에서 나와 이스라엘군을 쳐서 훈련된 병사 18,000명을 죽였다.

그러자 모든 이스라엘 사람들은 벧엘로 올라가서 여호와 앞에 앉아 울며 날이 저물도록 금식하고 화목제와 불로 태워 바치는 번제를 여호와께 드렸다.

The sons of Israel inquired of the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, Aaron's son, stood before it to minister in those days), saying, "Shall I yet again go out to battle against the sons of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?" And the LORD said, "Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand."

So Israel set men in ambush around Gibeah.

The sons of Israel went up against the sons of Benjamin on the third day and arrayed themselves against Gibeah as at other times.

The sons of Benjamin went out against the people and were drawn away from the city, and they began to strike and kill some of the people as at other times, on the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, and in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

(이 때에는 하나님의 법궤가 벧엘에 있었고 아론의 손자이며 엘르아살의 아들인 비느하스가 제사장으로 섬기고 있었다.) 그리고서 이스라엘 사람들은 여호와께 물었다. '우리가 다시 올라가서 우리 형제 베냐민과 싸워야 합니까, 아니면 그만두어야 합니까?' 그러자 여호와께서 '올라가거라. 내일은 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주겠다.' 하고 대답하셨다.

그래서 이스라엘군은 기브아 주변에 일부 병력을 매복시키고

3일째에 다시 나가 전번에 포진했던 곳에서 전투 태세를 취했다.

그때 베냐민 사람들이 성에서 나와 그들과 맞서 싸웠는데 베냐민 사람들은 유인 작전에 말려들어 성에서 점점 멀리 떠났다. 그들은 전과 같이 벧엘로 올라가는 길과 기브아의 들로 가는 길을 따라가면서 이스라엘군을 치기 시작하여 30명 정도 죽이고

The sons of Benjamin said, "They are struck down before us, as at the first." But the sons of Israel said, "Let us flee that we may draw them away from the city to the highways."

Then all the men of Israel arose from their place and arrayed themselves at Baal-tamar; and the men of Israel in ambush broke out of their place, even out of Maareh-geba.

When ten thousand choice men from all Israel came against Gibeah, the battle became fierce; but Benjamin did not know that disaster was close to them.

And the LORD struck Benjamin before Israel, so that the sons of Israel destroyed 25,100 men of Benjamin that day, all who draw the sword.

So the sons of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. When the men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah,

이스라엘군이 전과 같이 자기들 앞에서 패하여 도망한다고 생각하였다. 그러나 이스라엘군은 '우리가 도망하는 척하면서 저들을 성에서 큰 길로 꾀어 내자' 하였다.

이스라엘군의 주력 부대는 바알-다말까지 후퇴하여 거기서 다시 전열을 갖추고 반격 태세를 취했으며 기브아 주변에 매복하고 있던 이스라엘군은 거기서 일제히 뛰쳐나왔다

그때 전 이스라엘군 중에서 특별히 뽑힌 10,000명의 정예병이 기브아를 정면으로 공격하자 치열한 전투가 벌어졌다 그러나 베냐민 사람들은 자기들에게 재난이 닥친 것을 깨닫지 못하였다.

여호와께서 이스라엘군 앞에서 베냐민 사람을 패하게 하시므로 그날 이스라엘군은 칼을 쓰는 베냐민 사람 25,100명을 쳐죽였다.

그제서야 베냐민 사람들은 자기들이 패한 것을 알게 되었다. 이스라엘군은 기브아 주변에 매복하고 있는 병력을 믿고 베냐민 사람 앞에서 패한 척하고 후퇴하였다.

the men in ambush hurried and rushed against Gibeah; the men in ambush also deployed and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.

Now the appointed sign between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise from the city.

Then the men of Israel turned in the battle, and Benjamin began to strike and kill about thirty men of Israel, for they said, "Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle."

But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, Benjamin looked behind them; and behold, the whole city was going up in smoke to heaven.

Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were terrified; for they saw that disaster was close to them.

한편 매복하고 있던 이스라엘군은 순식간에 기브아로 돌격하여 사방으로 흩어져 칼로 그 성을 공격하였다.

처음에 이스라엘군은 그 성에서 연기가 치솟는 것을 보면 반격을 개시하기로 매복조와 미리 약속하였다. 베냐민 사람은 이스라엘군을 치기 시작하여 30명 정도 죽였을 때 이스라엘군이 전과 같이 패하여 자기들 앞에서 도주한다고 생각하였다.

그러나 성에서 연기가 치솟아 오르자 베냐민 사람들은 뒤돌아보고 온 성이 화염에 휩싸인 것을 알게 되었다.

그때 이스라엘군이 반격하자 베냐민 사람들은 재난이 자기들에게 닥친 것을 알고 몹시 당황하였다.

Therefore, they turned their backs before the men of Israel toward the direction of the wilderness, but the battle overtook them while those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst of them.

They surrounded Benjamin, pursued them without rest and trod them down opposite Gibeah toward the east.

Thus 18,000 men of Benjamin fell; all these were valiant warriors.

The rest turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, but they caught 5,000 of them on the highways and overtook them at Gidom and killed 2,000 of them.

So all of Benjamin who fell that day were 25,000 men who draw the sword; all these were valiant warriors.

그래서 그들은 이스라엘군 앞에서 등을 돌려 광야 쪽으로 달아났으나 그들은 피할 길이 없었다. 이스라엘군이 그들을 추격하고 성에서 나온 매복조도 합세하여 그들을 포위하므로 베냐민 사람은 기브아 동쪽 부근에서 쉽게 추격을 당해

용사 18,000명이 거기서 전사하였다.

그리고 나머지는 림몬 바위를 향해 광야 쪽으로 달아났으나 이스라엘군은 큰 길에서 5,000명을 더 죽이고 또 계속 추격하여 기돔에서 2,000명을 죽였다.

그래서 그 날 전사한 베냐민 사람은 25,000명이었는데 모두 용사들이었다.

But 600 men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they remained at the rock of Rimmon four months.

The men of Israel then turned back against the sons of Benjamin and struck them with the edge of the sword, both the entire city with the cattle and all that they found; they also set on fire all the cities which they found.

그러나 베냐민 사람 600명은 광야로 달아나 림몬 바위에서 넉 달을 숨어 지냈다.

이스라엘군은 다시 베냐민 사람들이 사는 곳으로 돌아가 가축은 물론 닥치는 대로 사람을 쳐서 죽이고 모든 성에 불을 질렀다.

	베냐민을 위한 대책(21:1-21:25)

Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying, "None of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin in marriage."

So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, and lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.

They said, "Why, O LORD, God of Israel, has this come about in Israel, so that one tribe should be missing today in Israel?"

It came about the next day that the people arose early and built an altar there and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

Then the sons of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD at Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death."

이스라엘 사람들은 미스바에 다시 모여 자기들의 딸을 베냐민 사람에게 시집보내지 않기로 맹세하였다.

그리고서 이스라엘 백성은 벧엘로 올라가 날이 저물 때까지 하나님 앞에 앉아 소리 높여 통곡하며

'이스라엘의 하나님 여호와여, 어쩌다가 이스라엘에 이런 일이 일어났습니까? 한 지파가 이스라엘에서 빠져나가야 하겠습니까?' 하고 부르짖었다.

그들은 다음 날 아침 일찍 일어나 거기에 한 제단을 쌓고 번제와 화목제를 드렸다.

그리고서 그들은 '이스라엘 모든 지파 가운데서 여호와 앞에 모이지 않은 자가 누구냐?' 하고 서로 물었다. 이것은 그들이 미스바에 와서 여호와 앞에 모이지 않는 자는 누구든지 죽이기로 맹세하였기 때문이었다.

And the sons of Israel were sorry for their brother Benjamin and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel today.

"What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD not to give them any of our daughters in marriage?"

And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel who did not come up to the LORD at Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

For when the people were numbered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.

And the congregation sent 12,000 of the valiant warriors there, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.

이스라엘 사람들은 그 형제 베냐민 사람들에 대해 마음 아프게 생각하며 이렇게 말하였다. '이제 이스라엘은 한 지파를 잃었다.

우리가 우리 딸을 그들에게 시집보내지 않기로 여호와께 맹세하였으니 어떻게 하면 우리가 그 남은 자들에게 아내를 구해 줄 수 있겠는가?'

그들은 이스라엘 지파 가운데 미스바로 올라와서 여호와 앞에 모이지 않은 자가 누구인지 물어 보고 길르앗의 야베스에서는 한 사람도 오지 않은 것을 알게 되었다.

그들이 인원을 점검했을 때 야베스 사람은 하나도 없었다.

그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 용감한 군인 12,000명을 길르앗의 야베스로 보내며 말하였다. '너희는 가서 야베스 주민을 칼로 쳐서 처녀가 아닌 사람은 어린아이까지 모조리 죽여라'

"This is the thing that you shall do: you shall utterly destroy every man and every woman who has lain with a man."

And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead 400 young virgins who had not known a man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

Then the whole congregation sent word and spoke to the sons of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.

Benjamin returned at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had kept alive from the women of Jabesh-gilead; yet they were not enough for them.

And the people were sorry for Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

그래서 그들은 야베스 주민 중에 남자와 한 번도 잠자리를 같이하지 않은 처녀 400명을 찾아 가나안 땅에 있는 실로의 진지로 데려왔다

그때 이스라엘 사람들은 림몬 바위에 숨어 있는 베냐민 사람들에게 사신을 보내 평화를 제의하였다.

그러자 베냐민 사람들이 자기들의 성으로 돌아왔다. 그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 길르앗의 야베스에서 데려온 처녀들을 그들에게 주었는데 그래도 여자가 부족하였다.

여호와께서 이스라엘 지파 가운데 한 지파가 빠져나가게 하셨으므로 이스라엘 백성은 베냐민 사람들을 생각하며 몹시 마음 아파하였다.

Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?"

They said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, so that a tribe will not be blotted out from Israel.

"But we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the sons of Israel had sworn, saying, "Cursed is he who gives a wife to Benjamin."

So they said, "Behold, there is a feast of the LORD from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south side of Lebonah."

And they commanded the sons of Benjamin, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,

그때 이스라엘의 지도자들이 이렇게 말하였다. '베냐민 지파의 여자들이 다 죽었으니 이제 우리가 어떻게 하면 살아 남은 자들에게 아내를 구해 줄 수 있겠는가?

이스라엘의 한 지파가 영원히 사라지지 않도록 하기 위해서는 우리가 어떻게 해서든지 살아 남은 베냐민 사람들에게 자식을 갖도록 해 주어야 한다.

그러나 우리 이스라엘 사람이 누구든지 자기 딸을 베냐민 사람에게 시집보내는 자는 저주를 받을 것이라고 맹세까지 하였으니 우리 딸을 그들의 아내로 줄 수도 없다.'

그러자 한 사람이 '실로에서 매년 지키는 여호와의 명절이 곧 돌아오지 않는가!' 하고 외쳤다. 실로는 벧엘 북쪽에 있고 르보나 남쪽에 있으며 벧엘에서 세겜으로 가는 큰 길 동쪽에 위치한 곳이었다.

그리고서 그들은 남은 베냐민 사람들에게 이렇게 말하였다. '너희는 가서 포도원에 숨어서 살피고 있다가 실로의 여자들이 춤을 추러 나오면 즉시 포도원에서 뛰어나와 그들을 하나씩 붙들어라. 그리고 그들을 너희 땅으로 데리고 가서 아내로 삼아라.

and watch; and behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to take part in the dances, then you shall come out of the vineyards and each of you shall catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

"It shall come about, when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, that we shall say to them, 'Give them to us voluntarily, because we did not take for each man of Benjamin a wife in battle, nor did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'"

The sons of Benjamin did so, and took wives according to their number from those who danced, whom they carried away. And they went and returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the cities and lived in them.

The sons of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and each one of them went out from there to his inheritance.

In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

만일 그들의 부모와 형제들이 우리에게 항의하면 우리는 그들에게 너희는 아량을 베풀어 그들이 너희 딸을 아내로 삼게 하라. 우리가 전쟁 중에 그들에게 아내를 구해 주지 못하였다. 너희가 직접 너희 딸을 그들에게 준 것이 아니므로 너희에게는 아무 잘못이 없다 라고 말하겠다.'

그래서 베냐민 사람들은 그들이 말할 대로 가서 각자 춤추는 여자들을 하나씩 붙들어 자기 땅으로 돌아가 성들을 재건하고 거기서 살았다.

그리고 이스라엘 사람들도 그 곳을 떠나 각자 자기 집으로 돌아갔다.

이 당시에는 이스라엘에 왕이 없었으므로 사람마다 자기 생각에 좋을 대로 하였다.
