	창세기 42:1-43:15 가나안 땅에 흉년이 들어 애굽에 곡물을 사러 온 요셉의 형들은 요셉과 첫 대면을 하게 되었다. 요셉은 형들을 시험해 보기 위해 형들을 정탐꾼으로 몰아 그들 중 한 사람을 인질로 잡아 두고 베냐민을 데리고 다시 오라고 명령하였다. 야곱은 베냐민을 보내려 하지 않았으나 유다가 자신을 담보로 야곱을 설득하였다. 결국 야곱은 전능하신 하나님을 의지하고 베냐민을 보내기로 결단을 내렸다.

	요셉과 형들의 1차 대면(42:1-42:25)

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you staring at one another?"

He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die."

Then ten brothers of Joseph went down to buy grain from Egypt.

But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with his brothers, for he said, "I am afraid that harm may befall him."

So the sons of Israel came to buy grain among those who were coming, for the famine was in the land of Canaan also.

야곱은 이집트에 곡식이 있다는 말을 듣고서, 아들들에게 말하였다. "얘들아, 왜 서로 얼굴들만 쳐다보고 있느냐?"

야곱이 말을 이었다. "듣자 하니, 이집트에 곡식이 있다고 하는구나. 그러니 그리로 가서, 곡식을 좀 사오너라. 그래야 먹고 살지, 가만히 있다가는 굶어 죽겠다."

그래서 요셉의 형 열 명이 곡식을 사려고 이집트로 갔다.

야곱은 요셉의 아우 베냐민만은 형들에게 딸려 보내지 않았다. 베냐민을 같이 보냈다가, 무슨 변이라도 당할까 보아, 겁이 났기 때문이다.

가나안 땅에도 기근이 들었으므로, 이스라엘의 아들들도 곡식을 사러 가는 사람들 틈에 끼었다.

Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

When Joseph saw his brothers he recognized them, but he disguised himself to them and spoke to them harshly. And he said to them, "Where have you come from?" And they said, "From the land of Canaan, to buy food."

But Joseph had recognized his brothers, although they did not recognize him.

Joseph remembered the dreams which he had about them, and said to them, "You are spies; you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land."

Then they said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

그 때에 요셉은 나라의 총리가 되어서, 세상의 모든 백성에게 곡식을 파는 책임을 맡고 있었다. 요셉의 형들은 거기에 이르러서, 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려, 요셉에게 절을 하였다.

요셉은 그들을 보자마자, 곧바로 그들이 형들임을 알았다. 그러나 짐짓 모르는 체하고, 그들에게 엄하게 물었다. "당신들은 어디에서 왔소?" 그들이 대답하였다. "먹거리를 사려고, 가나안 땅에서 왔습니다."

요셉은 형들을 알아보았으나, 형들은 요셉을 알아보지 못하였다.

그 때에 요셉은 형들을 두고 꾼 꿈을 기억하고, 그들에게 말하였다. "당신들은 첩자들이오. 이 나라의 허술한 곳이 어디인지를 엿보러 온 것이 틀림없소!"

그들이 대답하였다. "아닙니다. 총리 어른, 소인들은 그저 먹거리를 사러 왔을 뿐입니다.

"We are all sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies."

Yet he said to them, "No, but you have come to look at the undefended parts of our land!"

But they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers in all, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is with our father today, and one is no longer alive."

Joseph said to them, "It is as I said to you, you are spies;

by this you will be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here!

우리는 한 아버지의 자식들입니다. 소인들은 순진한 백성이며, 첩자가 아닙니다."

그가 말하였다. "아니오! 당신들은 이 나라의 허술한 곳이 어디인지를 엿보러 왔소."

그들이 대답하였다. "소인들은 형제들입니다. 모두 열둘입니다. 가나안 땅에 사는 한 아버지의 아들들입니다. 막내는 소인들의 아버지와 함께 있고, 또 하나는 잃었습니다."

요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. "내 말이 틀림없소. 당신들은 첩자들이오.

그러나 당신들이 진실을 증명할 길은 있소. 바로께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 당신들이 막내 아우를 이리로 데려오지 않으면, 당신들은 여기에서 한 발자국도 벗어나지 못하오.

"Send one of you that he may get your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. But if not, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies."

So he put them all together in prison for three days.

Now Joseph said to them on the third day, "Do this and live, for I fear God:

if you are honest men, let one of your brothers be confined in your prison; but as for the rest of you, go, carry grain for the famine of your households,

and bring your youngest brother to me, so your words may be verified, and you will not die." And they did so.

당신들 가운데서 한 사람을 보내어, 당신들 집에 남아 있는 아우를 이리로 데려오게 하고, 나머지는 감옥에 가두어 두겠소. 나는 이렇게 하여, 당신들이 한 말이 사실인지를 시험해 보겠소. 바로께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 당신들이 그렇게 하지 못하면, 당신들은 첩자라는 누명을 벗지 못할 것이오."

요셉은 그들을 감옥에 사흘 동안 가두어 두었다.

사흘 만에 요셉이 그들에게 말하였다. "나는 하나님을 두려워하오. 당신들은 이렇게 하시오. 그래야 살 수 있소.

당신들이 정직한 사람이면, 당신들 형제 가운데서 한 사람만 여기에 갇혀 있고, 나머지는 나가서, 곡식을 가지고 돌아가서, 집안 식구들이 허기를 면하도록 하시오.

그러나 당신들은 반드시 막내 아우를 나에게로 데리고 와야 하오. 그래야만 당신들의 말이 사실이라는 것을 증명할 수 있을 것이며, 당신들이 죽음을 면할 것이오." 그들은 그렇게 하기로 하였다.

Then they said to one another, "Truly we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, yet we would not listen; therefore this distress has come upon us."

Reuben answered them, saying, "Did I not tell you, 'Do not sin against the boy'; and you would not listen? Now comes the reckoning for his blood."

They did not know, however, that Joseph understood, for there was an interpreter between them.

He turned away from them and wept But when he returned to them and spoke to them, he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes.

Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain and to restore every man's money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. And thus it was done for them.

그들이 서로 말하였다. "그렇다! 아우의 일로 벌을 받는 것이 분명하다! 아우가 우리에게 살려 달라고 애원할 때에, 그가 그렇게 괴로워하는 것을 보면서도, 우리가 아우의 애원을 들어 주지 않은 것 때문에, 우리가 이제 이런 괴로움을 당하는구나."

르우벤이 그들에게 대답하였다. "그러기에 내가 그 아이에게 못할 짓을 하는 죄를 짓지 말자고 하지 않더냐? 그런데도 너희는 나의 말을 들은 체도 하지 않았다! 이제 우리가 그 아이의 피값을 치르게 되었다."

그들은, 요셉이 통역을 세우고 말하였으므로, 자기들끼리 하는 말을 요셉이 알아듣는 줄은 전혀 알지 못하였다.

듣다 못한 요셉은, 그들 앞에서 잠시 물러가서 울었다. 다시 돌아온 요셉은 그들과 말을 주고받다가, 그들 가운데서 시므온을 끌어내어서, 그들이 보는 앞에서 끈으로 묶었다.

요셉은 사람들을 시켜서, 그들이 가지고 온 통에다가 곡식을 채우게 하고, 각 사람이 낸 돈은 그 사람의 자루에 도로 넣게 하고, 또 길에서 먹을 것은 따로 주게 하였다. 요셉이 시킨 대로 다 되었다.

	야곱의 결단(42:26-43:15)

So they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed from there.

As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money; and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

Then he said to his brothers, "My money has been returned, and behold, it is even in my sack." And their hearts sank, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

When they came to their father Jacob in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,

"The man, the lord of the land, spoke harshly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

그들은 곡식을 나귀에 싣고, 거기를 떠났다.

그들이 하룻밤 묵어갈 곳에 이르렀을 때에, 그들 가운데서 한 사람이 자기 나귀에게 먹이를 주려고 자루를 풀다가, 자루 아귀에 자기의 돈이 그대로 들어 있는 것을 보았다.

그는 이것을 자기 형제들에게 알렸다. "내가 낸 돈이 도로 돌아왔다. 나의 자루 속에 돈이 들어 있어!" 이 말을 들은 형제들은, 얼이 빠진 사람처럼 떨면서, 서로 쳐다보며 한탄하였다. "하나님이 어찌하여 우리에게 이런 일을 하셨는가!"

그들은 가나안 땅으로 아버지 야곱에게 돌아가서, 그 동안 겪은 일을 자세히 말씀드렸다.

"그 나라의 높으신 분이 우리를 보더니, 엄하게 꾸짖고, 우리를 그 나라를 엿보러 간 첩자로 여기는 것입니다.

"But we said to him, 'We are honest men; we are not spies.

'We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no longer alive, and the youngest is with our father today in the land of Canaan.'

"The man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'By this I will know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me and take grain for the famine of your households, and go.

'But bring your youngest brother to me that I may know that you are not spies, but honest men. I will give your brother to you, and you may trade in the land.'"

Now it came about as they were emptying their sacks, that behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack; and when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were dismayed.

그래서 우리는 그에게 '우리는 정직한 사람입니다. 우리는 첩자가 아닙니다.

우리는 모두 한 아버지의 자식들로서 열두 형제입니다. 하나는 잃고, 또 막내는 가나안 땅에 우리 아버지와 함께 있습니다' 하고 말씀을 드렸습니다.

그랬더니 그 나라의 높으신 분이 우리에게 이르기를 '어디, 너희가 정말 정직한 사람들인지, 내가 한 번 알아보겠다. 너희 형제 가운데서 한 사람은 여기에 나와 함께 남아 있고, 나머지는 너희 집안 식구들이 굶지 않도록, 곡식을 가지고 돌아가거라.

그리고 너희의 막내 아우를 나에게로 데리고 오너라. 그래야만 너희가 첩자가 아니고 정직한 사람이라는 것을 내가 알 수 있겠다. 그런 다음에야, 내가 여기 잡아둔 너희 형제를 풀어 주고, 너희가 이 나라에 드나들면서 장사를 할 수 있게 하겠다' 하였습니다."

그들은 자루를 비우다가, 각 사람의 자루에 각자가 치른 그 돈꾸러미가 그대로 들어 있는 것을 보았다. 그들과 그들의 아버지는 그 돈꾸러미를 보고서, 모두들 겁이 났다.

Their father Jacob said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and you would take Benjamin; all these things are against me."

Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "You may put my two sons to death if I do not bring him back to you; put him in my care, and I will return him to you."

But Jacob said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he alone is left If harm should befall him on the journey you are taking, then you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow."

아버지 야곱이 아들들에게 말하였다. "너희가 나의 아이들을 다 빼앗아 가는구나. 요셉을 잃었고, 시므온도 잃었다. 그런데 이제 너희는 베냐민마저 빼앗아 가겠다는 거냐? 하나같이 다 나를 괴롭힐 뿐이로구나!"

르우벤이 아버지에게 말하였다. "제가 베냐민을 다시 아버지께로 데리고 오지 못한다면, 저의 두 아들을 죽이셔도 좋습니다. 막내를 저에게 맡겨 주십시오. 제가 반드시 아버지께로 다시 데리고 오겠습니다."

야곱이 말하였다. "막내를 너희와 함께 그리로 보낼 수는 없다. 그 아이의 형은 죽고, 그 아이만 홀로 남았는데, 그 아이가 너희와 같이 갔다가, 또 무슨 변을 당하기라도 하면 어찌 하겠느냐? 너희는, 백발이 성성한 이 늙은 아버지가 슬퍼하며 죽어서 스올로 내려가는 꼴을 보겠다는 거냐?"

Now the famine was severe in the land.

So it came about when they had finished eating the grain which they had brought from Egypt, that their father said to them, "Go back, buy us a little food."

Judah spoke to him, however, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'

"If you send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food.

"But if you do not send him, we will not go down; for the man said to us, 'You will not see my face unless your brother is with you.'"

그 땅에 기근이 더욱 심해 갔다.

그들이 이집트에서 가지고 온 곡식이 다 떨어졌을 때에, 아버지가 아들들에게 말하였다. "다시 가서, 먹거리를 조금 더 사오너라."

유다가 아버지에게 말하였다. "그 사람이 우리에게 엄하게 경고하면서 '너희가 막내 아우를 데리고 오지 않으면, 다시는 나의 얼굴을 못 볼 것이다' 하고 말하였습니다.

우리가 막내를 데리고 함께 가게 아버지께서 허락하여 주시면, 다시 가서 아버지께서 잡수실 것을 사오겠습니다.

그러나 아버지께서 막내를 보낼 수 없다고 하시면, 우리는 갈 수 없습니다. 그분이 우리에게 말하기를 '너희가 막내 아우를 데리고 오지 않으면, 다시는 나의 얼굴을 못 볼 것이다' 하였기 때문입니다."

Then Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly by telling the man whether you still had another brother?"

But they said, "The man questioned particularly about us and our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' So we answered his questions. Could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"

Judah said to his father Israel, "Send the lad with me and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, we as well as you and our little ones.

"I myself will be surety for him; you may hold me responsible for him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame before you forever.

"For if we had not delayed, surely by now we could have returned twice."

이스라엘이 자식들을 탓하였다. "어찌하려고 너희는, 아우가 있다는 말을 그 사람에게 해서, 나를 이렇게도 괴롭히느냐?"

그들이 대답하였다. "그 사람은 우리와 우리 가족에 관하여서 낱낱이 캐물었습니다. '너희 아버지가 살아 계시냐?' 하고 묻기도 하고, 또 '다른 형제가 더 있느냐?' 하고 묻기도 하였습니다. 우리는 그저, 그가 묻는 대로 대답하였을 뿐입니다. 그가 우리의 아우를 그리로 데리고 오라고 말할 것이라고는 상상도 하지 못하였습니다."

유다가 아버지 이스라엘에게 말하였다. "제가 막내를 데리고 가게 해주십시오. 그러면 우리가 곧 떠나겠습니다. 그렇게 하여야, 우리도, 아버지도, 우리의 어린 것들도, 죽지 않고 살 수 있을 것입니다.

제가 그 아이의 안전을 책임지겠습니다. 아버지께서는, 그 아이에 대해서는, 저에게 책임을 물어 주십시오. 제가 그 아이를 아버지께로 다시 데리고 와서 아버지 앞에 세우지 못한다면, 그 죄를 제가 평생 달게 받겠습니다.

우리가 이렇게 머뭇거리고 있지 않았으면, 벌써 두 번도 더 다녀왔을 것입니다."

Then their father Israel said to them, "If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

"Take double the money in your hand, and take back in your hand the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks; perhaps it was a mistake.

"Take your brother also, and arise, return to the man;

and may God Almighty grant you compassion in the sight of the man, so that he will release to you your other brother and Benjamin And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."

So the men took this present, and they took double the money in their hand, and Benjamin; then they arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

아버지 이스라엘이 아들들에게 말하였다. "꼭 그렇게 해야만 한다면, 이렇게 하도록 하여라. 이 땅에서 나는 것 가운데 가장 좋은 토산물을 너희 그릇에 담아 가지고 가서, 그 사람에게 선물로 드리도록 하여라. 유향과 꿀을 얼마쯤 담고, 향품과 몰약과 유향나무 열매와 감복숭아를 담아라.

돈도 두 배를 가지고 가거라. 너희 자루 아귀에 담겨 돌아온 돈은 되돌려 주어야 한다. 아마도 그것은 실수였을 것이다.

너희 아우를 데리고, 어서 그 사람에게로 가거라.

너희들이 그 사람 앞에 설 때에, 전능하신 하나님이 그 사람을 감동시키셔서, 너희에게 자비를 베풀게 해주시기를 빌 뿐이다. 그가 거기에 남아 있는 아이와 베냐민도 너희와 함께 돌려 보내 준다면, 더 바랄 것이 없겠다. 자식들을 잃게 되면 잃는 것이지, 난들 어떻게 하겠느냐?"

사람들은 선물을 꾸리고, 돈도 갑절을 지니고, 베냐민을 데리고 급히 이집트로 가서, 요셉 앞에 섰다.
