사사기 9:1-9:57

 기드온의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜 사람들을 동원하여 스스로 왕이 된 후 자기 형제 70명을 학살했다. 이 때 유일하게 목숨을 건진 요담은 세겜 사람들에게 나무의 우화를 들어 하나님께서 심판하실 것을 경고했다. 요담의 저주는 실현되어 아비멜렉은 자신을 배반한 세겜 사람들을 학살했고 자신도 여인이 던진 맷돌에 맞아 죽고 말았다.
  
  아비멜렉의 패역(9:1-9:57)    
 
  1. And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's relatives, and spoke to them and to the whole clan of the household of his mother's father, saying,
  2. "Speak, now, in the hearing of all the leaders of Shechem, 'Which is better for you, that seventy men, all the sons of Jerubbaal, rule over you, or that one man rule over you?' Also, remember that I am your bone and your flesh."
  3. And his mother's relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the hearing of all the leaders of Shechem; and they were inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, "He is our relative."
  4. They gave him seventy pieces of silver from the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, and they followed him.
  5. Then he went to his father's house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.
  1. 여룹바알의 아들 아비멜렉이 세겜에 있는 외가의 친척을 찾아가서 그들과 외조부의 온 가족에게 말하였다.
  2. "세겜 성읍의 모든 사람들에게 물어 보아 주십시오. 여룹바알의 아들 일흔 명이 모두 다스리는 것 하고 한 사람이 다스리는 것 하고 어느 것이 더 좋은지 물어 보아 주십시오. 그리고 내가 여러분들과 한 혈육이라는 것을 상기시켜 주십시오."
  3. 그의 외가 친척이 그의 부탁대로 세겜 성읍의 모든 사람에게 그가 한 말을 모두 전하니, 그들의 마음이 아비멜렉에게 기울어져서 모두 "그는 우리의 혈육이다" 하고 말하게 되었다.
  4. 그들이 바알브릿 신전에서 은 일흔 냥을 꺼내어 아비멜렉에게 주니, 아비멜렉이 그것으로 건달과 불량배를 고용하여 자기를 따르게 하였다.

  1. All the men of Shechem and all Beth-millo assembled together, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar which was in Shechem.
  2. Now when they told Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and lifted his voice and called out. Thus he said to them, "Listen to me, O men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.
  3. "Once the trees went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us!'
  4. "But the olive tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my fatness with which God and men are honored, and go to wave over the trees?'
  5. "Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come, reign over us!'
  1. 세겜 성읍의 모든 사람들과 밀로의 온 집안이 세겜에 있는 돌기둥 곁의 상수리나무 아래로 가서 아비멜렉을 왕으로 삼았다.
  2. 사람들이 이 소식을 요담에게 전하니, 그가 그리심 산 꼭대기에 올라가 서서, 큰소리로 그들에게 외쳤다. "세겜 성읍 사람들은 내 말을 들으십시오. 그래야 하나님이 여러분의 청을 들어주실 것입니다.
  3. 하루는 나무들이 기름을 부어 자기들의 왕을 세우려고 길을 나섰습니다. 그들은 올리브 나무에게 가서 말하였습니다. '네가 우리의 왕이 되어라.'
  4. 그러나 올리브 나무는 그들에게 대답하였습니다. '내가 어찌 하나님과 사람을 영화롭게 하는, 이 풍성한 기름 내는 일을 그만두고 가서, 다른 나무들 위에서 날뛰겠느냐?'
  5. 그래서 나무들은 무화과나무에게 말하였습니다. '네가 와서 우리의 왕이 되어라.'
  1. "But the fig tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to wave over the trees?'
  2. "Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come, reign over us!'
  3. "But the vine said to them, 'Shall I leave my new wine, which cheers God and men, and go to wave over the trees?'
  4. "Finally all the trees said to the bramble, 'You come, reign over us!'
  5. "The bramble said to the trees, 'If in truth you are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.'
  1. 그러나 무화과나무도 그들에게 대답하였습니다. '내가 어찌 달고 맛있는 과일맺기를 그만두고 가서, 다른 나무들 위에서 날뛰겠느냐?'
  2. 그래서 나무들은 포도나무에게 말하였습니다. '네가 와서 우리의 왕이 되어라.'
  3. 그러나 포도나무도 그들에게 대답하였습니다. '내가 어찌 하나님과 사람을 즐겁게 하는 포도주 내는 일을 그만두고 가서, 다른 나무들 위에서 날뛰겠느냐?'
  4. 그래서 모든 나무들은 가시나무에게 말하였습니다. '네가 와서 우리의 왕이 되어라.'
  5. 그러자 가시나무가 나무들에게 말하였습니다. '너희가 정말로 나에게 기름을 부어, 너희의 왕으로 삼으려느냐? 그렇다면, 와서 나의 그늘 아래로 피하여 숨어라. 그렇게 하지 않으면, 이 가시덤불에서 불이 뿜어 나와서 레바논의 백향목을 살라 버릴 것이다.'
  1. "Now therefore, if you have dealt in truth and integrity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have dealt with him as he deserved--
  2. for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian;
  3. but you have risen against my father's house today and have killed his sons, seventy men, on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he is your relative--
  4. if then you have dealt in truth and integrity with Jerubbaal and his house this day, rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you.
  5. "But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and consume the men of Shechem and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem and from Beth-millo, and consume Abimelech."
  1. 이제 여러분이 아비멜렉을 세워 왕으로 삼았으니, 이 일이 어찌 옳고 마땅하다고 할 수 있겠습니까? 이 일이 어찌 여룹바알과 그 집안에게 고마움을 표시하는 일이라고 하겠으며, 그가 이룬 업적에 보답하는 것이라 하겠습니까?
  2. 나의 아버지가 여러분을 살리려고 싸웠으며, 생명을 잃을 위험을 무릅쓰고 여러분을 미디안 사람들의 손에서 구하여 내지 않았습니까?
  3. 그런데도 이제 여러분은 나의 아버지의 집을 대적하여 일어나, 일흔 명이나 되는 그의 아들들을 한 바위 위에서 죽이고, 우리 아버지의 여종의 아들 아비멜렉을 여러분의 혈육이라고 하여서, 오늘 세겜 성읍 사람을 다스릴 왕으로 삼았습니다.
  4. 여러분이 오늘 여룹바알과 그 집안에게 한 일이 옳고 마땅하다면, 여러분은 아비멜렉과 더불어 기쁨을 누리고, 그도 여러분과 더불어 기쁨을 누리게 하십시오.
  5. 그러나 그렇지 않다면, 아비멜렉에게서 불이 뿜어 나와서 세겜 성읍 사람들과 밀로의 집안을 살라 버릴 것이며, 세겜 성읍 사람들과 밀로의 집안에서도 불이 뿜어 나와서 아비멜렉을 살라 버릴 것입니다."
  1. Then Jotham escaped and fled, and went to Beer and remained there because of Abimelech his brother.
  2. Now Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.
  3. Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,
  4. so that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood might be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers.
  5. The men of Shechem set men in ambush against him on the tops of the mountains, and they robbed all who might pass by them along the road; and it was told to Abimelech.
  1. 요담은 도망하여 브엘로 가서 피하였다. 그는 자기의 형 아비멜렉이 두려워서, 거기에 머물러 살았다.
  2. 아비멜렉이 이스라엘을 세 해 동안 다스렸다.
  3. 그 때에 하나님이 악령을 보내셔서, 아비멜렉과 세겜 성읍 사람들 사이에 미움이 생기게 하시니, 세겜 성읍 사람들이 아비멜렉을 배반하였다.
  4. 하나님은 아비멜렉이 여룹바알의 아들 일흔 명에게 저지른 포악한 죄과를 이렇게 갚으셨는데, 자기의 형제들을 죽인 피값을, 아비멜렉에게, 그리고 형제들을 죽이도록 아비멜렉을 도운 세겜 성읍 사람들에게 갚으신 것이다.
  5. 세겜 성읍 사람들이 아비멜렉을 괴롭히려고 산꼭대기마다 사람을 매복시키고, 그 곳을 지나가는 모든 사람을 강탈하게 하자, 이 소식이 아비멜렉에게 들렸다.
  1. Now Gaal the son of Ebed came with his relatives, and crossed over into Shechem; and the men of Shechem put their trust in him.
  2. They went out into the field and gathered the grapes of their vineyards and trod them, and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god, and ate and drank and cursed Abimelech.
  3. Then Gaal the son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is Zebul not his lieutenant? Serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem; but why should we serve him?
  4. "Would, therefore, that this people were under my authority! Then I would remove Abimelech." And he said to Abimelech, "Increase your army and come out."
  5. When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger burned.
  1. 에벳의 아들 가알이 자기 친족과 더불어 세겜으로 이사왔는데, 세겜 성읍 사람들에게 신망을 얻었다.
  2. 마침 추수 때가 되어, 세겜 성읍 사람들은 들로 나가 그들의 포도원에서 포도를 따다가, 포도주를 만들고 잔치를 베풀었다. 그들은 신전에 들어가 먹고 마시면서, 아비멜렉을 저주하였다.
  3. 에벳의 아들 가알이 말하였다. "우리 세겜 성읍 사람들이 어떤 사람들입니까? 왜 우리가 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 합니까? 도대체 아비멜렉이 누굽니까? 여룹바알의 아들입니다! 스불은 그가 임명한 자입니다. 그런데 왜 우리가 그를 섬겨야 합니까? 여룹바알과 그의 심복 스불은 세겜의 아버지 하몰을 섬기던 사람들입니다. 왜 우리가 아비멜렉을 섬겨야 합니까?
  4. 나에게 이 백성을 통솔할 권한을 준다면, 아비멜렉을 몰아내겠습니다. 그리고 아비멜렉에게 군대를 동원하여 나오라고 해서 싸움을 걸겠습니다."
  5. 그 때에 그 성읍의 통치자인 스불이 에벳의 아들 가알의 말을 전하여 듣고, 화가 치밀어,
  1. He sent messengers to Abimelech deceitfully, saying, "Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem; and behold, they are stirring up the city against you.
  2. "Now therefore, arise by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field.
  3. "In the morning, as soon as the sun is up, you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and behold, when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you shall do to them whatever you can."
  4. So Abimelech and all the people who were with him arose by night and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies.
  5. Now Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the city gate; and Abimelech and the people who were with him arose from the ambush.
  1. 몰래 전령을 시켜, 아루마에 있는 아비멜렉에게 알렸다. "보십시오, 에벳의 아들 가알과 그의 친족이 세겜으로 이사오더니, 임금님을 대적하려고 온 성읍 사람들을 충동질하고 있습니다.
  2. 그러니 이제 임금님께서는 밤중에 부하들과 함께 들에 매복하셨다가,
  3. 아침 일찍 동틀녘에 일어나서 성읍을 기습하시는 것이 좋을 듯합니다. 가알이 그의 무리를 이끌고 나올 때를 기다렸다가, 그들을 습격하십시오."
  4. 아비멜렉과 그와 함께 한 모든 군대가 밤에 일어나, 세겜 옆에 네 무리로 나누어 매복하였다.
  5. 에벳의 아들 가알이 나와서 성문 어귀에 서니, 아비멜렉과 그의 군대가 매복한 곳에서 나왔다.
  1. When Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, "Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains." But Zebul said to him, "You are seeing the shadow of the mountains as if they were men."
  2. Gaal spoke again and said, "Behold, people are coming down from the highest part of the land, and one company comes by the way of the diviners' oak."
  3. Then Zebul said to him, "Where is your boasting now with which you said, 'Who is Abimelech that we should serve him?' Is this not the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them!"
  4. So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech.
  5. Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded up to the entrance of the gate.
  1. 가알이 그 군대를 보고 스불에게 말하였다. "보시오! 사람들이 산꼭대기에서 아래로 내려오고 있소!" 그러자 스불이 그에게 대꾸하였다. "산 그림자가 사람들처럼 보이는 것이겠지요."
  2. 다시 가알이 말하였다. "보시오! 사람들이 높은 지대에서 내려오고, 또 한 떼는 므오느님 상수리나무쪽에서 내려오고 있소!"
  3. 그제야 스불이 그에게 말하였다. "'아비멜렉이 누구이기에 우리가 그를 섬기겠는가?' 하고 큰소리치던 그 용기는 지금 어디로 갔소? 저들이 바로 당신이 업신여기던 사람들 아니오? 어서 나가서 싸워 보시오!"
  4. 가알은 세겜 성읍 사람들을 거느리고 앞장서 나가 아비멜렉과 싸웠다.
  5. 그러나 그는 아비멜렉에게 쫓기어 그 앞에서 도망하였고, 많은 사상자가 성문 앞까지 널렸다.
  1. Then Abimelech remained at Arumah, but Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives so that they could not remain in Shechem.
  2. Now it came about the next day, that the people went out to the field, and it was told to Abimelech.
  3. So he took his people and divided them into three companies, and lay in wait in the field; when he looked and saw the people coming out from the city, he arose against them and slew them.
  4. Then Abimelech and the company who was with him dashed forward and stood in the entrance of the city gate; the other two companies then dashed against all who were in the field and slew them.
  5. Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and he captured the city and killed the people who were in it; then he razed the city and sowed it with salt.
  1. 아비멜렉은 아루마로 돌아가고, 스불은 가알과 그의 친족을 쫓아내어 세겜에서 살지 못하게 하였다.
  2. 그 다음날 아비멜렉은 세겜 사람들이 들로 나갔다는 소식을 들었다.
  3. 그는 자기 군대를 이끌고 나가서, 세 떼로 나누어 들에 매복하고 있다가, 그들이 성읍을 나서는 것을 보고 일제히 일어나 그들에게 달려들어 그들을 쳐죽였다.
  4. 아비멜렉과 그가 이끄는 한 떼는 앞으로 쳐들어가 성문 어귀를 지키고, 다른 두 떼는 들에 있는 모든 사람을 공격하여 그들을 쳐죽였다.
  5. 아비멜렉은 그 날 종일 그 성읍 사람들과 싸워서 그 성읍을 점령하였다. 그는 그 성읍 안에 있는 백성을 죽이고 나서, 성읍을 헐고, 거기에 소금을 뿌렸다.
  1. When all the leaders of the tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the inner chamber of the temple of El-berith.
  2. It was told Abimelech that all the leaders of the tower of Shechem were gathered together.
  3. So Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a branch from the trees, and lifted it and laid it on his shoulder. Then he said to the people who were with him, "What you have seen me do, hurry and do likewise."
  4. All the people also cut down each one his branch and followed Abimelech, and put them on the inner chamber and set the inner chamber on fire over those inside, so that all the men of the tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women.
  5. Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he camped against Thebez and captured it.
  1. 세겜 망대에 있던 성읍 지도자들이 모두 이 소식을 듣고, 엘브릿 신전에 있는 지하 동굴로 피하였다.
  2. 아비멜렉은, 세겜 망대에 있던 사람들이 모두 지하 동굴에 모여 있다는 소식을 들었다.
  3. 아비멜렉은 군대를 모두 이끌고 살몬 산으로 올라갔다. 아비멜렉은 손에 도끼를 들고서, 나뭇가지들을 찍어 어깨에 메고, 그와 함께 있는 백성에게 지시하였다. "내가 하는 것을 보았으니, 너희도 빨리 그대로 하여라."
  4. 그래서 저마다 나뭇가지들을 찍어가지고 아비멜렉을 따라가서, 지하 동굴 앞에 나무를 쌓아 놓고, 그 지하 동굴에 있는 사람들 쪽으로 불을 질렀다. 이렇게 해서 세겜 망대에 있던 성읍 사람들도 모두 죽었는데, 죽은 남녀가 천 명쯤 되었다.
  5. 그 뒤에 아비멜렉은 데베스로 갔다. 그는 데베스에 진을 치고, 그 곳을 점령하였다.
  1. But there was a strong tower in the center of the city, and all the men and women with all the leaders of the city fled there and shut themselves in; and they went up on the roof of the tower.
  2. So Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it, and approached the entrance of the tower to burn it with fire.
  3. But a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech's head, crushing his skull.
  4. Then he called quickly to the young man, his armor bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, so that it will not be said of me, 'A woman slew him.'" So the young man pierced him through, and he died.
  5. When the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, each departed to his home.
  1. 그러나 그 성읍 안에는 견고한 망대가 하나 있어서, 남녀 할 것 없이 온 성읍 사람들이 그 곳으로 도망하여, 성문을 걸어 잠그고 망대 꼭대기로 올라갔다.
  2. 아비멜렉은 그 망대에 이르러 공격에 나섰고, 망대 문에 바짝 다가가서 불을 지르려고 하였다.
  3. 그러나 그 때에 한 여인이 맷돌 위짝을 아비멜렉의 머리에 내리던져, 그의 두개골을 부숴 버렸다.
  4. 아비멜렉은 자기의 무기를 들고 다니는 젊은 병사를 급히 불러, 그에게 지시하였다. "네 칼을 뽑아 나를 죽여라! 사람들이 나를 두고, 여인이 그를 죽였다는 말을 할까 두렵다." 그 젊은 병사가 아비멜렉을 찌르니, 그가 죽었다.
  5. 이스라엘 사람들은 아비멜렉이 죽은 것을 보고, 저마다 자기가 사는 곳으로 떠나갔다.
  1. Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father in killing his seventy brothers.
  2. Also God returned all the wickedness of the men of Shechem on their heads, and the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
  1. 하나님은 아비멜렉에게 자기 형제 일흔 명을 죽여 자기 아버지에게 저지른 죄의 값을 이렇게 갚으셨고,
  2. 또 세겜 사람들의 죄악도 그들에게 모두 갚으셨다. 여룹바알의 아들 요담의 저주가 이렇게 그들에게 그대로 이루어졌다.
 
  방탕하고 경박한 유(類放蕩輕薄, 9:4)  정치적, 군사적 목적으로 매수된 건달들을 의미함
