- They came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes.
- When He got out of the boat, immediately a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit met Him,
- and he had his dwelling among the tombs. And no one was able to bind him anymore, even with a chain;
- because he had often been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn apart by him and the shackles broken in pieces, and no one was strong enough to subdue him.
- Constantly, night and day, he was screaming among the tombs and in the mountains, and gashing himself with stones.
|
- They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.
- When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him.
- This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain.
- For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
- Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
|
- Seeing Jesus from a distance, he ran up and bowed down before Him;
- and shouting with a loud voice, he said, "What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!"
- For He had been saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"
- And He was asking him, "What is your name?" And he said to Him, "My name is Legion; for we are many."
- And he began to implore Him earnestly not to send them out of the country.
|
- When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.
- He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!"
- For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!"
- Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."
- And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
|
- Now there was a large herd of swine feeding nearby on the mountain.
- The demons implored Him, saying, "Send us into the swine so that we may enter them."
- Jesus gave them permission. And coming out, the unclean spirits entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they were drowned in the sea.
- Their herdsmen ran away and reported it in the city and in the country. And the people came to see what it was that had happened.
- They came to Jesus and observed the man who had been demon-possessed sitting down, clothed and in his right mind, the very man who had had the "legion"; and they became frightened.
|
- A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.
- The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them."
- He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
- Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.
- When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.
|
- Those who had seen it described to them how it had happened to the demon-possessed man, and all about the swine.
- And they began to implore Him to leave their region.
- As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed was imploring Him that he might accompany Him.
- And He did not let him, but He said to him, "Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you."
- And he went away and began to proclaim in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him; and everyone was amazed.
|
- Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man--and told about the pigs as well.
- Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
- As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.
- Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you."
- So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolishow much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
|
- When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.
- One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet
- and implored Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live."
- And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
- A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years,
|
- When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake.
- Then one of the synagogue rulers, named Jairus, came there. Seeing Jesus, he fell at his feet
- and pleaded earnestly with him, "My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."
- So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
- And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
|
- and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse--
- after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak.
- For she thought, "If I just touch His garments, I will get well."
- Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.
- Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, "Who touched My garments?"
|
- She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
- When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
- because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed."
- Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
- At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?"
|
- And His disciples said to Him, "You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, 'Who touched Me?'"
- And He looked around to see the woman who had done this.
- But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
- And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction."
|
- "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?' "
- But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
- Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
- He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."
